People are greedy. Musicians now a days "make" music simply so they can profit off of it. Where if they were really passionate they'd want people to enjoy and share it with everyone. Then if you're caught even *linking* to a site that has pirated software you can be sued thousands of dollars when the content isn't even worth that much. I know most of the time, people pirate things they wouldn't normally buy anyway, such as a low rating game or crappy song. People can support artist other ways.
@iloveyoshi0xo Of course it's about piracy. People who produce it want to protect it, and those who would otherwise have to pay for it, want to steal it. Every time they cry "censorship" they always give a scenario that begins with someone stealing copyrighted work.
@BettorOffSingle It's about freedom of speech but more like freedom of EXPRESSION. The ability to create and share information. There's a very grey line for what the government calls "piracy" and there is no due process. Alleged "thieves" will get sued and entire sites will get shut down or extremely monitored.
@iloveyoshi0xo "Piracy" is when "registered copyrights" are "published or distributed" by "people" who are "not the owner" of the content. There is no gray area at all. SOPA does not kick in as long as no material is STOLEN. Your due-process complaint can be fixed very simply by requiring the accused pirates to come to America for their due process, much like they now want us to go to their countries to sue them. SOPA does *not* apply to American websites.
@iloveyoshi0xo I'm one of the few writers who has continued to produce quality work even when I know that 99.9 percent of my readers will be content thieves. I even made Bettor Off Single free so as to preserve my audience size, rather than fight this. Competitors of mine who give seminars and didn't care about e-book sales set up piracy sites specifically targeting self-help authors.
SOPA is the only law so far that will stop this. If you have a better idea, share it.
