My only concern is the material that the containers are made of. Many plastics leach plasticizers into water and then the plants leach it up. My suggestion is to use HDPE containers (preferably food grade) if you can find them as they are a pretty darn stable thermoplastic.

Quick question for you.... I notice you have green onions spinach and carrots in one container. How do you know how many you can plant in one container before they get too crowded?
If you look at the back of the packet that the seeds come in it gives a suggested and final planting space. I just plant them according to the packet and thin them as suggested. Carrots and onions dont take up much space so I plant them in among the spinach. ~Jeri

I have "borrowed" your container idea which is great since I go away for 2-3 days at a time and hopefully my plants will stay watered. I noticed you said you had just moved to the area...you don't happen to be a Newfie do you? -I noticed the slight accent-

Nothing smells as good as a freshly dug carrot. When I pick mine, I always smell them and smile lile a fool. lol Your spinach is about the healthiest I have seen. Very nice.
