@redtailslick Agree. Fantastic book, gripping stuff, particularly his account of his combat against an FW190 during the Dieppe operation. His MK V Spit was outclassed by the 190, but JJ flew it right to the limit and lived to fight another day. This modest man was the epitomy of the word 'hero.' Ultimate respect.
I know someone who was good friends with JJ. He told him about times he'd fly solo to France and machine-gun German convoys by running up and down the road with all guns blazing. They really were a very special breed of men.
The term 'hero' is tossed around very lightly these days. Johnnie Johnson OWNS that title as far as I'm concerned. He did everything that was asked of him with incredible skill and courage. Beyond that his honesty about his experiences (the good and the bad) along with his humility make him someone to be admired for all time! God Speed Johnnie!
For anyone who enjoyed this video of Johnnie Johnson, I've also now uploaded an excerpt from his appearance on This is Your Life sometime in the late 70s/early 80s.
Just search on 'johnnie johnson this is your life' and you should find it.
I showed this video to my dad a couple of weeks ago. He flew with Johnny Johnson at the end of WW2.
His reaction made me laugh....he couldn't get over how old he looked.
