hey scooby ive been following your workout program on your website and it seems to be working well for me. i was woundering what you thought of p90x..? is that where you got your idea for muscle confusion?
By the way Scott's assertion is basically thus: the 'muscle confusion myth' evolved out of a truism that became distorted over time. Muscles CAN become "adaptive" to whatever you throw at them. However, what they become adaptive to that requires constant augmentation is the "volume load" - NOT the exercise selection or workout sequencing. So if the muscles are not 'volume overloaded' and adequately recuperated between those volume overload sessions (workouts), they simply stop making progress.
Hey Scooby wonder what you think of this piece that Scott Abbett wrote on his assertion that muscle confusion is a "myth"? - google "scott abbett muscle confusion"
before i start doing heavy weights i do a set of warm up with low weight high rep (i do that before i start working out any muscle group), and at the next set i raise the weight and so on, until at the last forth set i do maximum weight for 4 reps.
i rarely do heavy weights, and I'm 19. If I can't do more than 8 reps with a starting weight, i'll usually drop the weight a bit. Of course, I throw in a heavier, low rep workout every so often for variation as I see fit.
muscle confusion is something even advanced lifters sometimes forget. im an advanced lifter, but always get carried away with doing heavy weights. i mix it up in other areas, but i need to do it more with doing more reps.
hey scooby or any1 that can reply im wondering should i do heavy lifting liek the week and i take one of those days of the week and do less weight more reps?
@99aeroman thats one of the reasons, i never ever reveal my age. cause people judge you by it. if people don't know it, they can no longer make comments or judge you by your age.
I have a question, please answer it. Im 15 yrs old and my max bench is 220 for 3reps, but i normaly do, 100lbs 12reps, then 120 10reps, then 150 for 8-6reps, but the instructors said Im to young to lift that heavy, cause Im only 70kg, they prefer me to do moderate weights and high reps, for example, 50lbs at bench, 25 reps, then 30 then 40, they said that I would get more cuts, grow my muscle and not destroy it. So are they right? btw, Im muscular but not that toned., please reply
@XTropaXTroopsX Like gangsterninja said, just keep doing what you're doing. If you can bench 220 I don't think benching 50 will do a thing for you... even doing push-ups would be better than that (works more muscles). And what does bodyweight have to do with it? Everyone's body is different, different bone structures, etc., means different strength potential.
That whole reps for cuts thing is a myth. To get ripped, you need to lose bodyfat. Same thing with getting "toned". Good luck.
y ar u doing them so slow? Ur making ur muscles work with a slow twitch, and ur putting unnecessary strain on ur joints. On your way down u should be in control but not that slow. When pushing the weight up it should be an explosive movement
@Stifledsubmission tell that to scooby face to face. im sure he knows what hes doing, plus slow is good, it'll train the lil muscles that arnt often used if you do them quick and explosive. and the joint thing, if you can handle the weight, it shouldn't be a big problem especially if you only do heavy once a month like scooby. now if you have a very difficult time even holding the dumbbells up, yeah slow will kill your joints.
Hey quick question: I'm 21 coming up 6'1 185. I'm lean, I want to get bulkier but also keep my cardio up, and possible six pack, alot there. What is the best answer for all this in a nut shell?
Scooby is awesome. He is one of the only ones out there who honestly are trying to help people without trying to get rich off of it. Plus he doesn't shove it in your face that he's "always right"...he just shows what's worked for him. And it's very clear....his technique has worked VERY well for him. Amazing physique
hey scooby have you ever used the 1.5 rep technique? I have used it just for pushups and pullups. It seems to work well, not like you really need it lol. But, it targets the various muscles at different times so makes the exercise more muscle specific.
The principle of using both high rep/low rep is often misunderstood. It does not increase your gains in mass, in fact, lowers them. However, you will have more endurance. It is a good idea to mix to have good overall power and endurance. Also high reps are good to avoid injury (as Scooby mentioned). Mixing it up means, in my opinion, targeting muscles from various angles, trying different exercises ja constantly challenging yourself with more weight. (instead of benching 80kg week after week)
hey scooby :) i love your awesome videos.. you know that video of yours, "Killer Home Chest Workout", is it okay if i do 3 sets with 60 seconds of rest between each of the sets and do it about 2-3 times a week?
a person who have just started weightlifting can do heavy weights for the whole body every workout 3 times a week as long as they get 48 hours of rest. they can do this for many months before they need to change their program and continiue with heavy weights 3 times a week. only people who have been lifting for about 1+ year need to shift between heavy, light and heavy. Read Starting Strength to learn this.
All of this is very true, and very wise. A long time ago, I'd only use minimal weight (as I was told, you see) and I wasn't making any gains whatsoever. However, now I realized the importance of "mixing" weight levels and the amount of sets to reps you perform. Like now, when I do my Lats, I use a cable row system. I first perform 2 sets and 4 reps of 170 pounds, then reduce to 110 pounds, and pull 3 sets with 10 reps...then I perform drop sets to finish off with.
I agree with the change but dont stop doing that heavy weight. Push yourself to muscle failure and increase your strength. Power can equal size. Call me a meat head i guess. I weigh 208 and press 365 Using pymids, negatives and percentages
This is also a perfect example that you don't need to be big packed like the pro's in the gym to be strong. Scooby has a very natural build body and I believe he has much more strenght than a bigger bodybuilder.
I'am just 21 old, but can lift weights like many adults simply because of natural training.
At this point I would like to thank Scooby for his awesome work. It really changed my whole training lifestyle with good results.
@lost4soul yeh i totoly agree, he has the educational background to support his facts and from seeing his physical shape u can tell, this guy knows exactly whats his doing...i hate youtube haters, and theose spammers that go around spamming every trailer n etc.

I'm a REAL bodybuilder (meaning I work my LEGS out) and I disagree you need to "confuse" your muscles.
What you really need to do is progressive overload, meaning always put in slightly more effort each workout, meaning more intensity, more reps, more weight, slower movement, WHATEVER. All you need is progressive overload, not "tricking" your muscles.

Why is it that in every YouTube clip of Arnold working out, he's doing the exercise seemingly as fast as he can?
I asked somebody else this question, and he said that the clip must be of a workout right before a competition ... to hit the "fast-twitch" muscles.
That may be true, but I've never seen a clip of him doing slow, concentrated reps of any exercise (like the ones you're doing, which is the way every trainer will tell you to do them).
include a shitload of cardio. best thing is swimming for cardio, jogging is bad for your joints (in the long run as everything), biking is ok, but watch your prostate if you bike, causes impotence (long run again). if you're keeping a regular workout every day, or atleast 5-6 times a week. split it, and every time you do weight training, do cardio after.
I run 10km per day in 40 minutes. I do resistance training 5 times per week for 2 hours each session however I always do 10 reps cos I feel its a nice moderate number. I need to know if high reps achieves enduance and low reps achieves strength then does moderate reps achieve both or something else entirely.
I have a great respect for a guy who is his age and in such fantastic shape. Those who have trashed talked here must not know the hours of time and dedication it takes to look that good. Way to go Scooby....you da Man!!!
scooby ive been a fan of your videos for a while now and i have definatley noticed results from your advice and i just have one question that remains!!!
w.e makes ur muscles sore is good even after afew days the muscles gets used to it so u could find new ways to make muscles sore again and with time that equals to muscle gaining ^,.,^
I'm using my mom's account. I'm 16 and working out. My friend told me even if you write with your right side, your left is always stronger, is that true?
is it ok to do both heavy and light in the same session? im 21 and when i go to the gym and start my 5 sets on say a lat pull down il do the first set on a light weight like 40kg then move up 5kg every set i do, still aiming to do 10 reps but i only get 6 sometimes on my last set, is this ok?
I love this guy....no homo.

I want to acheive a balance of muscular strength and endurance. Will doing meduim weight with meduim reps achieve this or should I 'mix it up'?
tyzereon 2 years ago
include a shitload of cardio. best thing is swimming for cardio, jogging is bad for your joints (in the long run as everything), biking is ok, but watch your prostate if you bike, causes impotence (long run again). if you're keeping a regular workout every day, or atleast 5-6 times a week. split it, and every time you do weight training, do cardio after.
Meurik1 2 years ago
You train 5 times a week 3 times boxing, 2 times gym, then 2 times at school. Im wondering why should i do cardio every time after weight lifting
matteblatte94 2 years ago
WHEN you do cardio isnt really important. Like Scoob says; whats important is that you do it,
And with that said I'm gonna go for a run! :p
IonicGell200 2 years ago
I run 10km per day in 40 minutes. I do resistance training 5 times per week for 2 hours each session however I always do 10 reps cos I feel its a nice moderate number. I need to know if high reps achieves enduance and low reps achieves strength then does moderate reps achieve both or something else entirely.

indigowalle 2 years ago
i don't think he used any steroids look closer he hasn't got gigantic enormous muscles... anyway whoever flames his vids is either dumb or fat!!
spid33r 2 years ago
if you think he has taken steroids, then you probably
1. have never set your foot on a gym and are in a terrible shape
2. have really crappy genetics.
