SPLENDIDA INTERPRETAZIONE!,SAREI VERAMENTE CURIOSO DI SAPERE PERCHE' 35 AMICI DELL'OPERA NON HANNO GRADITO QUESTA ESECUZIONE.C'E' QUI UN'ARTE DEL CANTO E UN GUSTO DAVVERO RARI.
I remember watching this production of Il Trittico on Live from Lincoln Center at the time. It is not often these days that a single singer attempts the lead soprano roles from each of Il Tabarro, Suor Angelica, and Gianni Schicchi. She was so wonderful (and different) in each. It is one of my first opera memories.
Some of those commenting on this performance may not know the context. Lauretta (Scotto) wants to marry a distant relation but the family looks down on her father. When they need him to help them he refuses and Lauretta, seeing her marriage plans slipping away, twists her "darling daddy" (babbino caro) around her little finger to get what she wants. While modern divas may beautifully inject pathos and the portent of tragedy into their renditions, this is not at all what Puccini had in mind.
@jjccxx5632 Several stage performances I saw here do show the comedy, watch the scene from the Met performance of a few years ago (search "O mio babbino caro Gianni Schicchi Met"), it's just that in concert when the aria is performed out of context, it may appear strage if a singer makes faces. But you are right about some of the people who comment.
In this production Scotto sang both Suor Angelica and Lauretta (and I think also Georgetta of Il Tabarro). The performance we are seeing came right after she had delivered Angelica in one of the greatest performances you will ever see- good excerpts are on utube. So, if she sounds a little ragged here, don't complain too much. It had been a long afternoon.
Wow, I've never seen it sung like that. I liked it the first time I heard it but from then on it got repetitive and boring and people tried to sing it with bad technique on things like America's Got Talent and had everyone going "wow". This version has just got me liking it again.
I`ve always watched sopranos act singing this as if singing 'Ach ich fuhl`s' or 'Vissi d`arte'. It`s a gentle and lyric aria, true, but 'Gianni Schicchi' is Puccini`s only COMEDY. It`s wonderful and refreshing to see such a performance, I can`t stop smiling! She has a unique timbre, a bit heavy, but I guess she was using the drama in her spinto voice.
Wow, my favorite aria. She's terrific! So glad you posted. Her voice is almost out of control, but not quite. I've listened to many opera singers sing this, and she is really one of the best. And I LOVE the way she plays coy with her father. That's exactly what's intended. As many others said, Brava, Renata!
YES, DEFINITELY RENATA SCOTTO IS THE BEST LAURETTA !!!
Yes, She gives the best as Lauretta!
I compared to Montserrat Caballé, Reneé Fleming, Renata Tebaldi, Kiri Te Kanawa, Elena Obraztsova, Agnes Baltsa, Anghela Gheorghiu and of course to the BIG CALLAS.
Excellent performance and not "only" perfect voice !
Superb!!! Please Gabbao2 have you got any more of this evening, as I recognised Gabriel Bacquier who - among other parts - was a wonderful Schicchi. I' d be immensely grateful Thank you
Her singing of this aria is marvelous - as is the expressiveness of her face when pleading with her dad. What a wonderful singer, whose voice I first heard on LP's when at a university in the mid-60's.
I totally respect the fact that she is a profesional, famous and well recognized opera singer but I really didn´t like how she sang this song I think it´s the worst i´ve ever heard, but that´s just my opinion, not a fact.
Well it's typical of Scotto. If you hear her Bohème, she is breathing still like this. It's a very useful way of taking breath (It's like being scared of something, like "ulp!"), I use it too :) and I'm quite "noisy" too, but it is not a problem when you are on stage.
Listen to other singers interpret this song, and you will see how she appears to be out of breath, and unable to get to the end of a note. Quite poor singing when compared to other great singers.
I think some of the folks with comments didn't "get it." She's smiling and making faces because she's selling her daddy a big dish of a story in order to get her way... She's "playing" him and he's buying! Beautiful voice; one of my favorites.
your 100% wrong! shes trying to convince him to let her marry her love and he says no and shes crying and babbo pieta translates to father pity me please and he doesnt and you must not know the opera because at the end she kills herself cuz he wont let her marry him so your totally wrong dont make things up
Grow up Kicka. Please don't impugn me based on your opinion. She is acting the typical teenager and thinking she's getting her way with him... at least as she is presenting her "case" to him. So what if things turn fatal later. Again, that would be a typical teenager reaction!
i must have missed the part where she kills herself at the end...oh right, that's because she doesn't. if YOU knew the opera you'd know he cheats the rich family out of some of their inheritance so she can marry rinuccio.
Never seen the opera, don't know the story - just like the aria so came upon this vid - and my take is she's "playing" her father - the coy smile, the way her eyes move. There's no other way to interpret this scene.
Agree with toddulus. She doesn't kill herself. She's pleading with her father to let her marry the man she loves. The father then somehow, as toddulus mentions already, cheats the family some of the inheritance so she can marry Rinuccio.
me enferman los comentarios idiotas que critican todo, sin siquiera detenerse a apreciar la belleza de su interpretación. Basta de criticar, a ver si pueden hacer tan bien o mejor que ella aaajajajajaja ni en sus sueños
great sound...but in MY oppinion I cant help but see tension in her lips...like she's working overly hard on diction and the breathing thing is weird..but overall great performance and beautiful color...
Renata es perfecta en lo que sea: Puccini, Verdi, Bellini o Donizzeti. Grandiosa y sus dotes histriónicas acompañan perfectamente su canto....Brava!!!!!!
lovely singing (breaths are loud indeed but her control has always been outstantding) and I loved looking at her face, quite a rare thing to say about and opera singer: she acts like a professional actress, all in her face conveys her meaning, those half smiles, those sparkling eyes...
Great voice with lovely timbre but diction was mushy. Better diction would have helped. Hard aria to sing with lots of leaps. Her breathing was loud and shallow...not from her diaphragm. Breathing like that makes it hard to focus on the next phrase and to have proper sound. Some nights it all gels well and other nights it doesn't :) It happens to everyone.
My goodness, I agree with the comment that the way she takes a big old honking breath at tne end of each phrase is terrible. Really awful! This is my favorite aria and I was looking for some good examples on youtube; thank you for posting but I won't be bookmarking this one.
I don't see any problem at all with your English. I was imitating Italian American actor Chaz Palmintieri. I agree. Florence is beautiful. I spent some time there in 198? Breathtaking - and cheap imitation Lacost T-shirts. I love Italy. I was lucky to live close to it in France. Often went to Ventimiglio for prosciutto and whisky. My ex wife had family in the Valtelina Valley. Went there often.
Have you never been to Naples? The south of Italy is even more beautiful; it's a pity it's so bad kept and not preserved from ruine. Noone can says he has known Italy they have not tried Napolitan pizza. It's better then everywhere.
No, I have to admit, I have never been to the south of Italy. It's a long way from where I am living now (Taiwan), but I'll save this information about Napolitan Pizza in my memory. You never know, I might get there one day. And I love pizza. I miss pancetta, and Parma ham - and parmeggiano reggiano (is that the right spelling?)
Those humongous breaths she keeps drawing between phrases really annoy me because she cuts the phrases' ends off just to breathe, which she shouldn't need to! Those're REALLY short phrases.
Yes, sometimes her pitch bends at the ends of phrases, but for being live IN the opera (all other YouTube recordings of the aria are concerts) I think she's fabulous. Her octave jumps are beautiful--her high notes just spin. Gorgeous.
Scotto performed all 3 operas in Trittico that evening (something few sopranos ever attempt). At this point she had already sung Tabarro and Angelica and she was probably tired after singing these extremely dramatic roles. But she compensates for the wobble with tremendous musicality and effective acting.
This is the only one which makes sense. Otherwise the music belongs in Tosca. O my dearest daddy He pleases me, and is handsome, handsome I want to go to Porta Rossa to buy the ring! Yes, yes, I want to go there! And if my love were in vain, I would go to the Ponte Vecchio and throw myself in the Arno! I am aching, I am tortured! Oh God, I'd like to die! Father, have pity, have pity! Father, have pity, have pity!
well, what can i say. normally i like her, on studio recordings anyway, may be because she gets a chance of second take... this performance, however, is a bit dodgy. rather strange for someone her rank.
