Saw them in Detroit. What a knock out night it was. Reefer and acid. Chapman and Whitney. I still remember driving home and Elton John shit was playing on the radio. What a travesty. But lets face it all of us know they were great , so fuck everyone els.
@monovenaros Mono, this would appear to be from the film Stamping Ground, which was about the 1970 rock festival in Kralingen, Rotterdam. There's an album available of the same title, with, among others, Jefferson Airplane, T-Rex, The Byrds and Pink Floyd.
Yes, a screaming hard-rock vocalist with operatic vibrato...that's Chapman for you. He reigns it in sometimes, but not here! I love it, though...so strangled and extreme, almost punk in a way. His performing moves remind me of Joe Cocker, but better. Love how he just drops the mike at the end!
It sounds like Bruce dickinson from Iron maiden and Rod Halford from judas preist took a shit and this is what it sounded like. In other words it a master peice.
Unnecessarily harsh vibrato mars an otherwise good vocal and great song. Chappo has a great voice, but sometimes his style is just too eccentric for me.
To me Family were and still are the greatest band that ever existed. It makes me sad that they are no longer around and nobody makes music this beautiful and powerful anymore. This is just perfect. I just wish bands from this era lasted a little bit longer. Everything was over and done in a few short years. I just missed out and had endure crap like Duran Duran that all my mates were into knowing very well only a few years earlier my older brother and his mates had been watching bands like this.
They were the kinda band you either loved or hated, my mate eventually talked me around and became 1 of my all-time faves. Got to see them live in Cardiff 5 times and again saw Chappo a few yrs ago live in a smaller venue and was still brilliant.; still a maniac and still brilliant!!
Well aren't you clever.Listen to the original studio recording. He still sounds a bit like a goat, but not as much as on this!Still Fucking Excellent though...eh?
Duke of Clarence, drowned in wine, claret actually, but I will bet he did not sound as good as this! :D Tull forever, oops I meant Family, no I didnt. Shit I give up.
as i'm about the same age as this music, i was much too young to see them live on stage. this song is one of my all time favorites and now for the first time i could see family on stage - thank you so very much mcdustsucker!!
excellent clip indeed...however the version of drowned in wine from the glastonbury festival '71 is even better..anyone able to upload it on here?? thanks..
Excellent clip, Chapman and crew in fine form. This is from the Kralingen Pop festival June 1970 isn't it. Got any more Mr Dustsucker? I'm trying to find a source for the T.Rex performance from the same event.
rarely is it commented on that many of Chapmans lyrics are extremely angry...........i means this in a good wa.

Wow! This is great stuff! As an American, I'd always read about this band, but never actually heard them til now. Very intense.
