Dude I just installed ubuntu 10.04 today and when I rebooted my pc I was bought to cmd looking page(terminal)--so I entered my username and password-- I don't no wa to do after that--- please tell me wa to do
ahh who needs a GUI - you can use the server remotely with SSH. I am running one in a cardboard box. only 2 cables needed: power and LAN. and i can do everything. that, people, is awesome.
Anyone who wants to use ubuntu server edition as a server will run this on the internet, and It isn't better than apache, apache is a service that comes with ubuntu server edition.
i mean, when i install this all is well, finally at the login ? lets me type a username but not a password... lol Anyway im on Fedora now, much more friendly lol
You are still typing a password even though no letters, numbers , or symbols appear when you type it. It is designed this way so that no one can even guess at the length of your password if they see you type it and use that to try to figure it out. Just try your password and then hit enter. Trust me, it works.
Anyone with basic Linux experience knows that Ubuntu is one of the most userfriendy Linux distributions, except noobs like you don't seem to gte that hehe
Hmm...that's what people on Ubuntu forums said to do. I didn't have enough disk space allocated so the gui didn't get installed. I later re-partitioned my hard drive to allocate more space for this OS, and I still failed.
Yep, which is why I have no clue how to use this sever properly, or rather, why I even bothered to installed it in the first place. I did manage to get access to Webmin on a different computer, and I managed to install MySQL 4.0. Also, I attempted to install a GUI, but I failed miserably. The Ubuntu forums probably have people who could help me, but I don't have the time to figure it out yet.
Despite Ubuntu trying to make things easier for people, it is still a known fact that GUIs on a server are mostly useless and do nothing but slow it down by taking up memory when the server is running headless in a closet or server room environment.
i think the gui makes certain tasks like file arrangment faster so i would just go with xubuntu xfce dosent use that much ram and you can always shut the gui down with the "stop x" command.
would be funny if the password is burns

I don't really understand what you mean by "won't let me type a password"...but I'm not really the person to ask.
Hmm...maybe I'll give fedora server a try on VMware, because I honestly don't need a web server. I was just having fun that day.

ubuntu server is not for everyone. it's for server admins who know what they're doing.

And I'm not one of them...I just had nothing better to do, and I wanted to see what I could manage to do with webmin.

Ah well, the GUI really doesn't matter anymore. I honestly don't need a server. But thanks for the explanation.

@MrUrbanExplorer
thats what I did
The original plan was to go Ubuntu Server but I didn't feel that I knew the terminal well enough to operately completely from it
so I just went Xubuntu
Its a home server so performance isn't really a big deal and it works wondeful to me
It basically just holds and distribute data
and also serves as my way of bypassing school security through use of vnc
