  • @Glad1kan What did you use to rip the audio for this? I have the bonus DVD but can't rip DVDs!

  • @Jackalos1 I don't remember. This was one-time task. I just used google or something...

Really dumb way to get a 320 kbps mp3 would be to convert the vob file with the song to xvid+mp3 avi specifying 320kbps audio bitrate and then extract mp3 with avi-mux gui.

Better way is to use some dvd-riper, At some point I used AoA Dvd ripper trial to extract audio from dvd.

  • dear god, thank you for giving us arjen lucassen and his awesome music, amen. i realize this is a song interpretation, not an original, but i like it more.

  • in your voice i can really hear the sadness. I always wondered as a little girl, what this song meant when my dad would play it. but yet now I know. I was the stranger..

  • @dhpmathmusic now that you mention it - true!

  • brilliant. nuff said.

  • THIS is how you do a cover. its a re interpretation, not a copy.

  • Pretty impressive. Only trouble it the higher notes obscure the brilliant lyrics. But even so, a rabid Cohen fan like me can still appreciate this version...

  • Wow! What an amazing and powerful cover.

  • Why is it that most of these covers by Guilt Machine aren't on the album? :(

  • I'm working on expanding my vocal ranges and styles, but damn, Jasper has amazing vibrato in his high register. :)

  • The 3 dislikes cannot be rationalized and I don't mean this as some thumbs up comment, I mean it. If you don't like this then wtf is your mental deficiency?

  • @Lukeor

I can see where they are coming from. Not anywhere close to the original. IMHO it simply doesn't do it justice. The vocals are trying too hard. Cohen's version was a masterpiece. This isn't.

  • @conmilae Of course it's not cohen, I never implied it was. I'm just perplexed at someone hearing this and taking the energy to dislike it.

  • @conmilae Trying too hard on the vocals my ass. It's not anywhere close to the original because it's a re-interpretation of the song. In my opinion, if you are going to cover a song, you should make it some what of your own.

  • Such an incredible voice.. Dramatic, powerful.. Seems perfect for covering a song which has such deep lyrics!

  • I for one like this cover way better than the original.

    Just rip it off youtube.

  • Jasper has a magnifical voice, even better than Freddie Mercury. But, I know, I'm a woman (and this man is so... incredibly beautiful), Belgian (Jasper is from our little country - Flemish part) and for that, not very objective ;-)

  • Aunque no es la mejor voz, Jasper tiene una manera única de hacer sentir la música tan cautivadora para mis oídos. Tanto que puede hacer que uno llegue a un estado de éxtasis. Buena elección por parte de Arjen.

  • I like this but, Leonard Cohens version is still 10 times better. This is to clean, to short, I'm missing some essential parts of the song. The singer has a great voice but he overdoing it, I hate the way he's moaning, maybe he was thinking that he would add some emotion to the song, but this way it sounds really fake. But I still like it a little hehehe. You should watch the live version from 1967, at the end you can see a tear in leonards eyes...

  • Thank You! I read earlier your comment at this video. I will search for DVD.

  • Somebody tell me where can I find this song? On the album doesn't exist...

  • @mishulaksis It's from bonus DVD.

There might be mp3s somewhere... But it's better to buy and rip yourself.

  • @mishulaksis I'm so glad I bought the album when it came out, it seems like it might be a huge collector's piece some day in the future.

  • ahhh Jasper's voice was perfect for this album :O it's sooo versatile!!

  • I prefer Cohen's version much more, but in honesty, I almost always do. The beauty of this song I feel was the sheer simplicity. With Cohen it's all about the lyrics, he is after all a poet, not the music. This version is very edgy, and a stunning composition with a powerful voice, yet I feel it expresses anger, depression and / or a need for vengeance. I feel Cohen was trying to express a stunning self realization that greatly moved him.

  • I love this singer. And I like L. Cohen. So in that comparison, I love this version. It's pretty epic to me.

And misshelloween, don't know exactly what you said there, but I see Jasper and Freddie Murcury, and I agree.

  • For me, anyway, the charm of the original is that it is not epic. I prefer Cohen's version but this is still an amazing cover.

  • La voz de Jasper tiene matices parecidos a la de Freddy Mercury , con el debido respeto.

  • yes, especially at 1:13 I almost fell off my chair! what a voice!

  • Very powerful, Lucassen and Steverlinck took this song to great heights.

  • Great and powerful cover, I prefer this over the original version as well.

  • I know the original but this is more epic!

  • Amazing!

  • You should hear the original, mishu ;)
