Also Linus don't think that Crysis 2 issue is steams fault - it's EA's fault. Don't go slandering something unless your sure you know what you are talking about
did anyone go OMG when they heard linus about to install a Geforce 560 Ti with that dinky little power supply?? I saw that disaster coming from a mile away LOL. Can't believe he didn't realize that was a bad idea!
The GTX 560 Ti has a recommended supply of 500W. 300W, however, will fully support it. The extra wattage is headroom for if you have 8 hard drives, or something crazy.
I am using one of these Shuttle cases for an HTPC, conntected to a Sony 42 inch LCD TV. I got a very similar build to Linus, but I am using a Radeon 6770 instead of a GTX 560. At a room temp of 23C, I am getting around 48 C on the i3 2100 CPU, max load from what I have seen so far has been around 68, so well within specs. The video card is hovering around 60C at idle, highest I have seen during gameplay was around 80C. So all within specs. Oh and the PSU is more than capable to handle all this.
@Nvidia9700MGT 30 FPS is very average. If you made it 60 FPS the shuttle will blow up since Linus couldn't change the power supply to increase hardware
@Nvidia9700MGT Laptop wasn't meant for gaming because it gets really hot and has high temps which can mess up hardware in your computer so that's you stutter while gaming :) not because of graphics
i would put a lil less powerful video card in there as even 560gtx will get hot and loud even idle... also if they supported amd motherboard i would prob throw in a quad core 65w athlon in there which will give much more performance but will use less power and for the video card.... i dunno.... lower end of 6000 amd series
@No603Scope I like where you're going there, but I'd say AMD Llano A8 3850 crossfired with a 6670! Low power, little heat, and a lot cheaper! The i3 + GTX560 is kinda overkill for me, though it does kick ass XD
ya when i wrote that i didnt really look at the Llano series, I am LITERATELY about to leave my house to pick up a laptop from best buy with an a8 just because its so amazing
wasn't Linus the one that said if you do need to use a molex to pci-e adapter you should get a new PSU. I have one little question. I will be building a new PC soon and was wondering about thermal paste. I will use Arctic Silver 5 on an i5 2500k and a H60. Should I use the same amount and method or should I put a bit more and spread it for better heat dissipation.
@Mdemons12 never spread, never, it leaves tons of air bubbles which are hard to get rid of, just put a little blob in the center and wiggle the heatsink a bit on top, that should be fine
just get a thick 80 mm rad, a samll but strong pump, 2x silent 80mm fans (one on each side of the rad and u can install a quad core cpu & a really silent build - BUT u would need a 400 watt psu, 350 wouldnt be enough for the pump + 2 fans for the rad.... u could install a gtx 560ti though too if u would have 50 more watts ;)
Why not i5 2405S? :P It's 65W aswell, but it's quad core and has Intel HD3000 graphics (that one won't strutter on every single 1080p video you throw at it, unlike HD2000 - it may struggle on 16 ref. frame 20+ mbit/s videos)
Seriously.. what's the point of handicaping urself with a ridiculously way too small and extremely unefficient cooled case. I'd rather get a Antec Three Hundred at worse.

You can't deny knowing about the engine isn't important if you "know" all about cars. Example. half bridge power supplies tend to be the generic POS that you see I don't care that you have built computers for 10 years, so have I. continued....
@chronofusion Knowing what the insides of your power supply is kind of important as it's a decent way to judge the quality of it. Also what the hell does a vaccuum cleaner have to do with A. enough power for a 560,
B. Depends on the household wiring and how well it'll cope. You can't do a blanket statement about running a 580 and a vaccuum cleaner on the same line.
@Eagle1337 what I do KNOW about computer tech world,I know FROM EXPERIENCE. I dont have to know whether or not the parts insides a psu is sufficient enough or not. I'm not dumb enough to trust a 400 watt psu having 1 or 2 12v rails totally 25 amps on a 125 or 140 watt cpu, 4 gigs of ram, gtx 560 requiring more than 26 amps of amp breathing room=common sense.Load or not. I'm not stupid enough to gamble. You DONT mix low end psu with high end parts.ya build IN BALANCE=COMMON SENSE
@Eagle1337 if you want to use the same stupidity as you would running a hardcore gaming rig with a gtx580 on the exact same outlet ( regardless of how new or old a home's electrically wiring system is) as where a 12 amp vacuum cleaner is already plugged in and running in the same risky choices as your computer system. that's your problem & your money down the drain for nothing when something breaks sooner than it should. as for me. I value my hard earned money alot more than the fed reserve.
@Eagle1337 yeah. I COULD put a gtx 580 ( one six pin and one 8 pin pwr connector), 140 watt intel cpu, 8 gigs of ddr3 2400 ram, 2 vertex 3 series ssd's, 2x 3 tb 7200 rpm hdd's all on the same 550 watt psu with a single 12v of 30 amps and it would PROBABLY run ok for a short time..but honestly. again IT'S COMMON SENSE. I'm not spending big bucks on other parts and cheap out on the MOST important part of the computer. Any other experienced builder like myself WILL agree with me. again. done.
@chronofusion Other things I love how you add things that have nothing to do with if a 400w psu can run a 560, such as a vacuum cleaner, tryign to switch topics to if a psu 360w on the 12v rail can power a 580, or your windmill. but funny... I don't know of any place that has wind 24/7. If you want to prove your point. If you are so right go get yourself a clamp meter and then factor in efficienc to get how much power your computer is really using. Also stop adding in random crap...
@chronofusion .... that has nothing to do with a 400w psu can run a 560... It just proves more so that you are wrong.. or can't stay on one subject and want to try to pull a one up on me.
no im still pretty sure im right and u are continuing to make yourself look silly calling me an idiot ..over the internet.. some one u dont even know... who is trying to be helpful you my friend are not a very pleasant person thank you for your time :)
Hey, what's better the ASrock z68 Extreme4 ($190) or the Asus P8Z68-V ($120) or ASUS P8Z68-V PRO ($150) . i'm buying my parts tomorrow, so i would apreciate if someone could help me soon. thanks in advance
@kulpreetg i'd stick with Asus, (more reliable) and its up to you which asus mobo. Clearly the pro has more kit but just ask yourself whether you need the extra kit.
Man you could tottally cut holes on the side of the case next to the video card to keep it a lil bit cooler, and install fan fan protedtors over the opening to keep fingers and things out of the way......Just a thought.
@brianrb84 That and you could prob put an external fan taped with double sided tape powered by some batteries which can help with the overall air flow, and cut some holes on the top of the case and put another external fan, and on the right side of the cpu cut some more out and put an exhaust fan.
Your personal channel 'Linus tech tips' is more fun, for some reason. What's a good place to look at power consumption needs and not feel self conscious before buying.
wow, why now the personals from NCIX are using white gloves, look at the esther new video and you will see that the camera man is using white gloves too
@hackerpluskevin Must be new policy to avoid getting the oils and so on in your skin onto products that can potentially leave marks behind. Beyond that, no idea.
very good guide, although i think it would be more reasonnable to use a graphics card with a blower heatsink that expels all the hot air outside of the case, especially with a tiny case like this with no fans to create a cooling airflow
haha, Ive just finish the vid, the 1st videocard is like a 454ci V8 trying to fit on a fiesta...needs more juice from the power supply...but I was wondering if he manage to add extra powa to run that beast...
Why didnt you take one of the newer silverstone SG-Series cases? They also come with a 600W Power Supply, better cooling and more space. This way you also could have chosen the motherboard by yourself and eventually overclock the system.
@74Eric74 560 or the 560 TI does not need a 500w psu.. A Intel Core i7 920(ES) @ 4.0Ghz (Turbo Mode Enabled), Corsair 3x2GB Dominator DDR3 1600Mhz with a 560 doesn't break exceed 400w when fully loaded.
@Eagle1337 you're right about 400 watts TOTAL consumption. most gtx560's have 2 6-pin power connectors on them. each 6 pin needs up to 75 watts. in the most realistic cases the 2 6-pins will draw a max of around 125 watts under heavy gaming load, then there's the pci express 16 slot drawing in another 75 watts.FSP Group AURUM GOLD 400 proves you are right, however most 400 watt psu's either wont have a comfy enough amount of AMPS or 12v rail watts or both. some 400 watters are getting better
@Eagle1337 actually how many 6 pins DOES matter. again each 6 pin can use up to 75 watts. Most often it uses around 50 to 60 tops. add in the pci express slot at 75 guaranteed and ya have between 175 to 200 watts for consumption. MOST 400 watt psu's are cheap in price & quality and dont have REALLy suitable enough 12v rail wattage power and amperage power to SAFELY support this card. again. I ALREADY gave you an example of when you're point would be correct. convo over.
@chronofusion By the logic of Most XX watt psus are cheaper in price and quality... doesn't work as you can say that about ANY wattage. I also do ask you this: do you know what double forward is, or half bridge, or LLC Resonant Half Bridge? And when i say 380ih wattage i'm talking about 100% load on cpu and gpu.. something that won't happen in real life.
@MaxSiegmayer Yes easily, you'll put about 290ws with an oc'd i7 920 fully loaded, which is also an amount of load you won't sdee in real life very often.

If you are so right go get yourself a clamp meter and then factor in efficienc to get how much power your computer is really using. Also stop adding in random crap...
Eagle1337 8 months ago
@chronofusion .... that has nothing to do with a 400w psu can run a 560... It just proves more so that you are wrong.. or can't stay on one subject and want to try to pull a one up on me.
efficiency*

May have slightly screwed my math up, but yeah this "350w" isn't really a 350w, I love the Peak rating.

Hey, what's better the ASrock z68 Extreme4 ($190) or the Asus P8Z68-V ($120) or ASUS P8Z68-V PRO ($150) . i'm buying my parts tomorrow, so i would apreciate if someone could help me soon. thanks in advance
kulpreetg 8 months ago
@kulpreetg i'd stick with Asus, (more reliable) and its up to you which asus mobo. Clearly the pro has more kit but just ask yourself whether you need the extra kit.

Linus, are you aware that you can upgrade shuttles psus to 500 watts right?
MrCpuclocker 8 months ago
Hey, Linus, why are you using gloves?
SlaveSasuke 8 months ago
i wonder what the dimensions are ,and if they have more cool design cases.
they are pretty cool for mods

Would it be possible to upgrade the PSU for not too much?
reallunacy 8 months ago
@reallunacy i think the stock psu is better for savety .
you dont wanna over power that little case right?
you cant put a i7 core in it anyways or a huge grafics card on full power.
well you can ,if your nuts and like to burn the house down.
ImmortalUniverse 8 months ago
@reallunacy Yeah, its a little more money then most power supplies at the range due to compactness but for around 100-150$ you can get a 500 watt psu.

I would totally cut out a little mesh window in front of the graphics card.
BlindRoxas13 8 months ago
I would buy a Shuttle if it supported high-end components, which it honestly doesn't.
mknmunk 8 months ago
@mknmunk Smallish-form factors aren't usually associated with high end components , let alone bare-bone sets.
BlindRoxas13 8 months ago
Man you could tottally cut holes on the side of the case next to the video card to keep it a lil bit cooler, and install fan fan protedtors over the opening to keep fingers and things out of the way......Just a thought.
Cheers!
brianrb84 8 months ago
@brianrb84 That and you could prob put an external fan taped with double sided tape powered by some batteries which can help with the overall air flow, and cut some holes on the top of the case and put another external fan, and on the right side of the cpu cut some more out and put an exhaust fan.

Your personal channel 'Linus tech tips' is more fun, for some reason. What's a good place to look at power consumption needs and not feel self conscious before buying.

Why didnt you take one of the newer silverstone SG-Series cases? They also come with a 600W Power Supply, better cooling and more space. This way you also could have chosen the motherboard by yourself and eventually overclock the system.

is 350w enough for a 560 or a 570?
MaxSiegmayer 8 months ago
@MaxSiegmayer No, at least 500W for a 560 and 550-600W for a 570. ;)
74Eric74 8 months ago
@74Eric74 560 or the 560 TI does not need a 500w psu..
Eagle1337 8 months ago
@Eagle1337 I know but it is better to have a little more power. :)
74Eric74 8 months ago
@74Eric74 560 or the 560 TI does not need a 500w psu.. A Intel Core i7 920(ES) @ 4.0Ghz (Turbo Mode Enabled), Corsair 3x2GB Dominator DDR3 1600Mhz with a 560 doesn't break exceed 400w when fully loaded.
Eagle1337 8 months ago
@Eagle1337 you're right about 400 watts TOTAL consumption. most gtx560's have 2 6-pin power connectors on them. each 6 pin needs up to 75 watts. in the most realistic cases the 2 6-pins will draw a max of around 125 watts under heavy gaming load, then there's the pci express 16 slot drawing in another 75 watts.FSP Group AURUM GOLD 400 proves you are right, however most 400 watt psu's either wont have a comfy enough amount of AMPS or 12v rail watts or both. some 400 watters are getting better
chronofusion 8 months ago
@chronofusion Pretty much any proper 400w psu will be fine. how many 6pins doesn't really matter too much to determine how much power a card uses.
Eagle1337 8 months ago
@Eagle1337 actually how many 6 pins DOES matter. again each 6 pin can use up to 75 watts. Most often it uses around 50 to 60 tops. add in the pci express slot at 75 guaranteed and ya have between 175 to 200 watts for consumption. MOST 400 watt psu's are cheap in price & quality and dont have REALLy suitable enough 12v rail wattage power and amperage power to SAFELY support this card. again. I ALREADY gave you an example of when you're point would be correct. convo over.
chronofusion 8 months ago
@chronofusion By the logic of Most XX watt psus are cheaper in price and quality... doesn't work as you can say that about ANY wattage. I also do ask you this: do you know what double forward is, or half bridge, or LLC Resonant Half Bridge? And when i say 380ih wattage i'm talking about 100% load on cpu and gpu.. something that won't happen in real life.
Eagle1337 8 months ago
@MaxSiegmayer Yes easily, you'll put about 290ws with an oc'd i7 920 fully loaded, which is also an amount of load you won't sdee in real life very often.
