  • one of the greatest aussie songs ever, thank god he quit drugs so he can still make music for the youth of today

  • Now Nicky Boy is all bald and religious. He was so beautiful when he was young and drug addicted

  • everytime i listen to this song i get so entranced by the sound of his voice and the music that i dont even listen to the actual words. ive heard this song a million times and i still only know the "shiver down my spi- iy-iy-iy-iy-iyiyiyine" part.

  • estou a ouvir neste momento esse som que cena :)

  • absolutely brilliant!

  • Does anyone know where i can find the piano for this song?

  • That's RAW!! Brilliant expression!

  • Wasn't aware Cave could sing pretty, since I only like him in his screamy phase. This song's good, though.

  • Rip Rowland!

  • is this the original of this song?

  • @shottskies yeah

  • @nzoz1979

    nope

  • @crobster

    search roland s howard

  • @shottskies Actually no, it was recorded with Rowland S. Howards original band "Young Charlatons"

  • @SelfSufficientBand * "Young Charlatans" all the info is in the video description.

  • @shottskies No See @SelfSufficientBand 's post

May as well be the original though. I'd add two things: rest in peace Tracy Pew (a long time gone), and rest in peace Rowland Howard (a little more recent). Australian music misses you both.

  • @shottskies

No, Roland S. Howard wrote it and performed it with The Young Charlatans before joining the Boys Next Door - TYC released it on 7" in 1978 - TBND recorded their version in 1979.

  • he hasn't lived in australia since the 1970's, yet sounds like he just got off the boat

  • Cat Power was right.

  • @luizyoung what was she right about?

  • Wow.

I teared up. This is fucking awesome.

  • meravigliosa ed intramontabile <3

  • seriously gold must have been coming out of aussie radio sets in the late 70's. wish i would have been there to hear this stuff as it was just coming out.

  • @WooldridgeDaniel

I don't think there were many radio stations, other than Double J (in Sydney) and 3RRR (in Melbourne) in Australia that were prepared to play stuff this left-field in 1979. Even national chart show TV show Countdown (avid supporter of local music) refused these guys on the show (suicide reference is not for children). The coolest shit to play on Aussie radio in '79 may have been Boomtown Rats, Knack, Mi-Sex, Cars... the rest was disco, Rod Stewart, ABBA, BG's and that ilk.

  • @nzoz1979 One good thing about Australia in this year was the music. The live scene was very strong and a lot of the bands had the talent to make it internationally or at least be contenders. The most commercial were good (Australian Crawl, Cold Chisel, Jo Jo Zep), but tended to stick within conventional guidelines, whilst the rule breakers and 'radical' groups replied heavily on cult status and credibility. Even Midnight Oil were ignored during this period. Aussie radio hasn't changed...

  • @nzoz1979 Yeah you can thank Glen Wheatly for the drivel they have putting out on our radios for years yuck

  • @MsJeffVader I know... amazing how the bassplayer of the great Masters Apprentices in the 60's was to be the most powerful promoter of musical dross in the 1980's. Reaffirms that you cannot trust hippies!

The launch of FM in Australia had a good start, but the honeymoon was quick to end and really, the only ones to benefit from it were Australian Crawl, Midnight Oil, Cold Chisel... the less commercial focused groups like Scientists, Laughing Clowns, Go-Betweens, Triffids, had to leave for UK

  • @nzoz1979 he said about relocting to england, that the sad thing was the stuff in australia at the time was far more interesting and original

  • OMFG!! I'm going to be rocking in the corner of how good this!!! O_O

  • so i think ill just watch porn instead

  • @cobboGHS91 lol... probably more honest than the actual line

  • Oh I'm so in love ♥

  • MoRe gold from NzOz....

    well done mate.

PS.. Bring back Nightmoves and old school Countdown....!!

  • Golliwogg APPROVES of this song.

  • 22 people have never contemplated suicide

  • @JonLambert89 you are trippin!

  • @cromlek I must have been drunk when I posted that because I can't remember it.

  • like like like likety like like like

  • This song is my heart.......

  • Is it just me or is it gettin' dusty in here?

  • And the sound of this song

Sends a perennial shiver down my

    Spiii-yi-yiiii-yi-yiiii-yi-yiyiyi-ine

  • I'd say this is a much better version than the Screaming Jets'...

Simply because of the panache. Nick's more expressive voice, and the brittle sound suiting the song rather than the Jets' which just had the tune on the acoustic I believe.

Some people might find this over the top though I guess.

  • one of my favortite bands!

  • @coptersoisoi

    well now you do

  • i love the virsion of "the witches" for this song you all sould chek it out

  • This song is huge in Australia but not because of Nick Cave and this the original version. IN 1992 Australian Rock Group The Screaming Jets covered this song and it, skyrocketed all the way to the top, sounds kind a soaked in Valium and it is One Of the groups signature live songs, It is what the Jets are known for. Check em out if you love Legendary Aussie rock like Ac/dc or Rose Tattoo.

  • @hambone9119 it did not actually reach number one, but it was still a big hit for them nevertheless. Great piece of Oz Rock. :)

  • You never cease to amaze me nzoz good music as always FKN LEGEND

  • @6819ljj thank you !!!!

  • R.I.P. Rowland S Howard. The original writer of this song. Sadly missed.

  • Did this get number 1?

    it must have..

  • Rowland S. Howard died of liver cancer December 2009. So R.I.P Rowland S. Howard too.

  • @Josorama - Rowland died on 31st December 2010

  • this is so my song xxxx

  • Thanks so much. This has been my favorite youtube vid for awhile. Thanks, I Awome I agree "what a great performance". Like Bazmchat i loved Birthday Party and all for so long so it was great to find this and freinds are also suprised they never saw it but love it. The Boys Next Door got little exposure in the states outside of college radio. This vid and song is totally awsome. Thanks for the great description. They are all such awsome people I thank the oneness of existence for this.

  • what a great performance :)

  • Inevitale ,that this man acquired such a distinguished career.

  • Still a fucking awesome version of the song!

  • AMAZING thanks so much for the upload....i got this tune randomly in a mix earlier this year and thought it was just a freaky nick cave soundalike ~:D it grew on me! Nick Cave is the best

  • Also, cant imagine 18 people giving this song a thumbs down.

  • @deannadeadly 18 people were contemplating suicide so much their hand slipped on the mouse. :)

  • This is my absolute favorite song.

  • Another great upload. Had heard very little Boys Next Door prior to this. It's interesting to hear Cave's voice developing over the years. Thanks!

  • Doesn't matter, This is Nick Cave! I'll take this from him all the way to the current GrinderMan music. I love this man with all my heart.

  • Why didn't I know this - after more than 20 years of listening to The Birthday Party, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds??? How sweet and young he looks, he could play in one of those vampire-movies... Ok, that's why I love the internet - I guess without Youtube I never would have got to know this...

  • R.I.P Tracey Pew 19/12/57-7/11/86...24 years gone-never forgotten.

  • @joydivisionboy1

Woah, Tracey died in November '86, Michael Hutchence died in November '97 and James Freud died in November '10.

R.I.P for all of them. James Freud can now happily meet Tracey Pew (and Rowland S. Howard) up in the clouds and kick his arse for throwing dog shit at him on stage, all those years ago.

  • @nzoz1979 i reckon they'll sit down and laugh about it over a beer...what happens on tour stays on tour :)

  • @joydivisionboy

He seemed pretty angry about in a 2005(?) interview I read. He said something to the effect that he didn't care that Tracey Pew is dead. He mentions the incident in his first book. One can only hope they're having a laugh about it now.

  • ...was it drugs??I never knew Pew had died...shame on me

  • @TheBitterSweetgr Nope. Leukemia.

  • @epsteinsmutha1 shiiiit....anyway....thank you

  • @TheBitterSweetgr you're quite welcome, sad as it is to be the bearer of such news, even a quarter of a century on.

  • @epsteinsmutha1 you see..I've always been a Birthday Party fan...from my early teens'n'onwards...but never knew their full story...like I've known Cave's for example...and I've got a tremendous amount of respect for their rhythm section...so it really makes me sad to hear that....I should have known it though

  • @epsteinsmutha1 - Tracey didn't die from Leukemia, he had an epileptic fit and hit his head on the bathtub. RIP

  • @MickBellTV Checked and you're absolutely correct. Senility kicked in after 30. Could've sworn that snippet in Reflex all those years ago said leukemia. What a drag it is getting old.

  • don't know if it's already mentioned, but roland s howard HATES this version of his song. reckons nick cave hammed it up and over did it! I actually like it and it is a classic. I also think nick cave is one of the best live acts ever! but yeah.... roland thinks this version missed the point!

  • first line, ive been contemplating suicide..could only be nick cave.

  • @nzoz1979 Thanks for Uploading, Thanks for the informative description. "Dogs In Space" is a must see movie, for those interested in Aussie Cinema, Aussie Music, Melbourne, the period of change from post punk into new romantic. It is brilliant and this song features strongly.

  • @toglusid yep, its a great feature... i'll visit that house one day.

  • Great song , never heard it before. Thanks for posting.

  • SO SO SO SO SO GOOD.

it's hard to articulately describe my love for this song and it's lyrical brilliance.

  • FANTASTIC SONG & SUPERB(BEST ) version!!! Love early Boys ND & B'day party!! HANDS UP WHO WANTS TO DIE!! ;-)

  • how could it be anyone but NicK?

  • Oh my god, he's soooo young. Great voice.

  • Didn't Nick Cave make this song famous. Is this Nick Cave?? I thought his first band was the Birthday Party......Nick the Stripper!!

  • @iloveknitting1 it's nick cave, singing in the Boys Next Door, who would later change their name to The Birthday Party...

I know I have been snotty in the past, which I would like to stop doing: However, I haven't written out of a description for nothing....

  • whats with the hand movements? lol, is that dancing?

  • now i wanna watch dogs in space cause this is in it

  • Wonderful song! Nick Cave is truly the bestest!

  • mate what a timeless era of most baby boomers

  • Missing my limited edition green vinyl, still a great song though.

  • my ex best friend first showed me this. I really do miss him. P if you're reading this hit me up. I miss you. you were my bf before all the bullshit that happened. due to that I can't contact you no longer. I dol miss you buddy. if you ever miss your buddly D let me know. hugs........

  • Shhhhhiverrrrrrsss...

  • ...and...and...the 'mirror' is a metaphor for the mirror that coke users cut their powder on! Not all dark music is about drugs!

  • I always find good songs here thanx

  • Nick Cave you have come a long way. Still kinda nice

  • I still have the original vinyl album and cover today..Im also one o those who love the LadyH n have done for more than 30yrs..still chasing still gettin shivers...Love this song love this album aus music rocks!!

  • 15 retarded souless fucks gave this a thumbs down. Go figure?.

  • @cromlek the guy who wrote this song gives this version a thumbs down. probably for different reasons to those 15 retarded souless fucks tho! ;)

  • excellent track

  • Brilliant song. Brilliant band.

    RIP Rowland.

  • Classic tune.

  • Nick Cave 79 changed my life!!!

  • awesome!!!

  • Sublime stuff. Thanks for posting it.

  • Ah hell guys, who bloody cares? This is one of the greatest tunes you will hear. This is Nick at his absolute best. I have been following him for 25 years and I tell you, he got it right then. Just shut up, forget the analysing or analising, shut your eyes and listen. F me, it is GOOD

  • No matter the meaning behind this song, it's so absolutely beautiful!

  • beautiful.RIP Rowland.

  • Amazing

  • Nick one of the best I seen of yours - but I have seen many of yours for the first time and thought that

  • Absolutely beautiful...

  • i am melting away...!

  • wait... these guys did the music for The Road? Lol who wouldve guessed that

  • SO F'in brill oi check out a band from aus called will stoker & the embers!!! so good

  • Was this shown on new zealand tele? i

  • @jtgjazz123 the only ones who can answer that are those who watch nz television.

  • my stepmum keeps saying this song is about crack, dosent sound it... is it?

  • @ClaudiaParks i doubt that-more likely heroin

  • @donkeypoke you're looking too much into this. Rowland wrote it about a girl he had a crush on, who turned him down... i'm sure 16 year old Rowland would have laughed at your comment, if he had read it...

  • @nzoz1979 lol, I agree. and crack and meth aren't the same drug. I've known lots of druggies who never called it their wife either, I never did, lol!

  • @lilyslimit the story of the song was mentioned in the doco 'We're Living On Dog Food'... lol... why do people connect a good song about unrequited love with drugs?

  • Respond to this video...I agree again, lol. Ppl romanticize drug use/addiction for some odd reason. Often it's the pl who haven't watched their friends dying like flies (fly's ?) or being sent off to spend their best years in jail, or just throwing away talent and dreams for shit and nothing.

  • @lilyslimit and sometimes it is people who use drugs and are seriously addicted.

  • @nzoz1979 because junkies are self absorbed pieces of sh!t with no ability to see beyond their own agenda.

  • @lokikane

    Yeah, that's true...

  • @nzoz1979 I agree. BTW drugs are overrated, and a fucking waste of time

  • @vlado544 i know... i know people who've been on the hammer for 30 years...amazing how they're still alive, but what a waste!

  • @nzoz1979 at first I read your comment and thought "what a cunt!", but then I stopped and thought about it and then I thought - "Oh my fucking god! WHAT A FUCKING CUNT!"

  • @GlassPike

Thanx for telling me about how you think of me. Nice knowing that you think of me and still come up with the same answer. HA HA HA

  • @GlassPike better than being a BORING CUNT who thinks over the same thing twice and still remains having the same conclusion, than a fucking cunt who seems to show more intelligence than a boring cunt who needs to think twice before coming up with the same answer. Sorry if my response may cause you to think four times more than you usually do.

  • @GlassPike no dude, its not the same answer, if you were an aussie you would get it,lol

  • be careful wen u say drugs, because weed n pyschedelics get the knock for beign grouped as a drug aswell so they ge a masive kock on tehre rep from heroin n coke ect from people sayign drugs r bad.

  • @vlado544

it'S not a waste of time

  • @nzoz1979 i thought anita lane wrote it?

  • @nzoz1979 i thought anita lane wrote it, im pretty sure thats what it said in nick caves biography called bad seed

  • @donkeypoke Sorry, but roland said different. It is sad that he has died, he was a lovely guy.

I suppose like most of us from that place and time that survived it, the time we have is a bonus.

  • @donkeypoke Ha. You'd have to want to see that to find it.

  • @donkeypoke what a crock of shit! 1979. crack? meth? the song is about unrequited love. It was written by Rowland S Howard when he was just 16 years old.Just because you're a crackhead doesn't mean everyone else is.

  • brilliant

  • This is my Favorite Nick Cave song besides Dead Joe and Release the Bats. I remember When my Ex called me about two months after we broke up She said her name and like this song says Sends Shivers Down my Spine!!!!. Anywayz I moved on and now engaged to the love of my life.

  • First time I have heard this version of the song. Quite erie and very emotionally charged, not a bad effort at all.

Can't go past the Jets cover I reckon.

  • @hqkingswood Jets version comes closer to how Rowland S. Howard (the composer) wanted it to sound.

  • I'm so sad that I have to say that I can't believe this is Nick Cave, cause if I had been with them from the start, I never would say something like that...but, yeah...I was born 11 years after this :(

  • I love this song!

  • This is such a beautiful song...so haunting. I have also listented to it numerous times!

  • @lvmscinco , thanks for sharing, this is so good, keep listening to it...

  • have listened to the birthday party and nick cave for a while now, but just heard this song for the first time about a week ago and have since listened to it more than five times a day. something about it just affects me so much. it's beautiful and god nick cave is so young!! ace song thank you!

  • I totally agree...such a wonderful song!

  • taking over youtube.. THE BOYS.. cuz this lame what is this

  • There's no point explaining this clip to people like you. LOL. Your videos suck, you'll impress nobody but impressionable 10 year old boys, who'll only grow up to be just like you and your so-called 'boys'.

LOL, God I hate intellectually inferior morons like yourself.

  • @MaTiLdAisAustralian that was cute. no homo.

  • @TheBoysFilms ha ha, she's right. your videos are shit.

  • @nzoz1979 austrailians and new zealanders.. ha.. cute

  • @TheBoysFilms you trying to spell 'Australians' is cute. Gotta love the American education system.

  • @nzoz1979 Do you know what happend to the Rest of the Young Charlatans?

  • @Wehategod Drummer moved on to Laughing Clowns. Bassplayer moved on to play in the Saints.

  • @nzoz1979 We Americans are not all idiots. This young generation (my generation and younger), however, are shockingly dimwitted. Some of us, on the other hand, actually know how to spell correctly.

  • @MordaciousFilms I am aware of this, because I am communicating with Americans.

  • @nzoz1979 Alright. It seemed otherwise.

  • @MordaciousFilms

No it did not seem that way at all. I was targeting at the moron and his limp-wristed attempt at patronising me, by pointing out his poor spelling and laying blame at the American Education System for his own personal downfall in spelling. I did not suggest that Americans could not spell.
