May as well be the original though. I'd add two things: rest in peace Tracy Pew (a long time gone), and rest in peace Rowland Howard (a little more recent). Australian music misses you both.
No, Roland S. Howard wrote it and performed it with The Young Charlatans before joining the Boys Next Door - TYC released it on 7" in 1978 - TBND recorded their version in 1979.
seriously gold must have been coming out of aussie radio sets in the late 70's. wish i would have been there to hear this stuff as it was just coming out.
I don't think there were many radio stations, other than Double J (in Sydney) and 3RRR (in Melbourne) in Australia that were prepared to play stuff this left-field in 1979. @nzoz1979 One good thing about Australia in this year was the music. The live scene was very strong and a lot of the bands had the talent to make it internationally or at least be contenders. The most commercial were good (Australian Crawl, Cold Chisel, Jo Jo Zep), but tended to stick within conventional guidelines, whilst the rule breakers and 'radical' groups replied heavily on cult status and credibility. Even Midnight Oil were ignored during this period. Aussie radio hasn't changed...
@MsJeffVader I know... amazing how the bassplayer of the great Masters Apprentices in the 60's was to be the most powerful promoter of musical dross in the 1980's. Reaffirms that you cannot trust hippies!
The launch of FM in Australia had a good start, but the honeymoon was quick to end and really, the only ones to benefit from it were Australian Crawl, Midnight Oil, Cold Chisel... the less commercial focused groups like Scientists, Laughing Clowns, Go-Betweens, Triffids, had to leave for UK
Used to see them rehearse at the warrigul rd church in 76 in ashwood . Melb. Oz.. fond memories.. wasn,t my friend then again they were.the dogs in space ..
I'd say this is a much better version than the Screaming Jets'...
Simply because of the panache. Nick's more expressive voice, and the brittle sound suiting the song rather than the Jets' which just had the tune on the acoustic I believe.
Some people might find this over the top though I guess.
This song is huge in Australia but not because of Nick Cave and this the original version. IN 1992 Australian Rock Group The Screaming Jets covered this song and it, skyrocketed all the way to the top, sounds kind a soaked in Valium and it is One Of the groups signature live songs, It is what the Jets are known for. Check em out if you love Legendary Aussie rock like Ac/dc or Rose Tattoo.

Why didn't I know this - after more than 20 years of listening to The Birthday Party, Nick Cave & the Bad Seeds??? How sweet and young he looks, he could play in one of those vampire-movies... Ok, that's why I love the internet - I guess without Youtube I never would have got to know this...
Woah, Tracey died in November '86, Michael Hutchence died in November '97 and James Freud died in November '10.
R.I.P for all of them. James Freud can now happily meet Tracey Pew (and Rowland S. Howard) up in the clouds and kick his arse for throwing dog shit at him on stage, all those years ago.
He seemed pretty angry about in a 2005(?) interview I read. He said something to the effect that he didn't care that Tracey Pew is dead. He mentions the incident in his first book. One can only hope they're having a laugh about it now.
@epsteinsmutha1 you see..I've always been a Birthday Party fan...from my early teens'n'onwards...but never knew their full story...like I've known Cave's for example...and I've got a tremendous amount of respect for their rhythm section...so it really makes me sad to hear that....I should have known it though

@donkeypoke you're looking too much into this. Rowland wrote it about a girl he had a crush on, who turned him down... i'm sure 16 year old Rowland would have laughed at your comment, if he had read it...
@lilyslimit the story of the song was mentioned in the doco 'We're Living On Dog Food'... lol... why do people connect a good song about unrequited love with drugs?
Respond to this video...I agree again, lol. Ppl romanticize drug use/addiction for some odd reason. Often it's the pl who haven't watched their friends dying like flies (fly's ?) or being sent off to spend their best years in jail, or just throwing away talent and dreams for shit and nothing.
@nzoz1979 at first I read your comment and thought "what a cunt!", but then I stopped and thought about it and then I thought - "Oh my fucking god! WHAT A FUCKING CUNT!"
@GlassPike better than being a BORING CUNT who thinks over the same thing twice and still remains having the same conclusion, than a fucking cunt who seems to show more intelligence than a boring cunt who needs to think twice before coming up with the same answer. Sorry if my response may cause you to think four times more than you usually do.
be careful wen u say drugs, because weed n pyschedelics get the knock for beign grouped as a drug aswell so they ge a masive kock on tehre rep from heroin n coke ect from people sayign drugs r bad.
@donkeypoke what a crock of shit! 1979. crack? meth? the song is about unrequited love. It was written by Rowland S Howard when he was just 16 years old.Just because you're a crackhead doesn't mean everyone else is.
This is my Favorite Nick Cave song besides Dead Joe and Release the Bats. I remember When my Ex called me about two months after we broke up She said her name and like this song says Sends Shivers Down my Spine!!!!. Anywayz I moved on and now engaged to the love of my life.
I'm so sad that I have to say that I can't believe this is Nick Cave, cause if I had been with them from the start, I never would say something like that...but, yeah...I was born 11 years after this :(
have listened to the birthday party and nick cave for a while now, but just heard this song for the first time about a week ago and have since listened to it more than five times a day. something about it just affects me so much. it's beautiful and god nick cave is so young!! ace song thank you!
There's no point explaining this clip to people like you. LOL. Your videos suck, you'll impress nobody but impressionable 10 year old boys, who'll only grow up to be just like you and your so-called 'boys'.
LOL, God I hate intellectually inferior morons like yourself.
@nzoz1979 We Americans are not all idiots. This young generation (my generation and younger), however, are shockingly dimwitted. Some of us, on the other hand, actually know how to spell correctly.
No it did not seem that way at all. I was targeting at the moron and his limp-wristed attempt at patronising me, by pointing out his poor spelling and laying blame at the American Education System for his own personal downfall in spelling. I did not suggest that Americans could not spell.
one of the greatest aussie songs ever, thank god he quit drugs so he can still make music for the youth of today

@nzoz1979 at first I read your comment and thought "what a cunt!", but then I stopped and thought about it and then I thought - "Oh my fucking god! WHAT A FUCKING CUNT!"

@GlassPike
Thanx for telling me about how you think of me. Nice knowing that you think of me and still come up with the same answer. HA HA HA
nzoz1979 1 year ago
@GlassPike better than being a BORING CUNT who thinks over the same thing twice and still remains having the same conclusion, than a fucking cunt who seems to show more intelligence than a boring cunt who needs to think twice before coming up with the same answer. Sorry if my response may cause you to think four times more than you usually do.

@GlassPike no dude, its not the same answer, if you were an aussie you would get it,lol

@donkeypoke Sorry, but roland said different. It is sad that he has died, he was a lovely guy.
I suppose like most of us from that place and time that survived it, the time we have is a bonus.
mozzaok 1 year ago
@donkeypoke Ha. You'd have to want to see that to find it.

First time I have heard this version of the song. Quite erie and very emotionally charged, not a bad effort at all.
Can't go past the Jets cover I reckon.
hqkingswood 1 year ago
@hqkingswood Jets version comes closer to how Rowland S. Howard (the composer) wanted it to sound.

I'm so sad that I have to say that I can't believe this is Nick Cave, cause if I had been with them from the start, I never would say something like that...but, yeah...I was born 11 years after this :(

MordaciousFilms 1 year ago
@MordaciousFilms I am aware of this, because I am communicating with Americans.
nzoz1979 1 year ago
@nzoz1979 Alright. It seemed otherwise.
MordaciousFilms 1 year ago
@MordaciousFilms
No it did not seem that way at all. I was targeting at the moron and his limp-wristed attempt at patronising me, by pointing out his poor spelling and laying blame at the American Education System for his own personal downfall in spelling. I did not suggest that Americans could not spell.
