Unbelievable the talent Eleanor has. I mean, I love what Fred is doing, but I can't see much of it because I can't take my eyes off of Eleanor! How she is totally feminin with her moves, but she has a way of getting the dance up out of her that the men couldn't touch. I'm sorry, but I just can put it into words that well. Extraordinary!!!
One very respected critic said, if I was marooned on an island and could only view 8 minutes of a movie it would be this one and this dance. It is the finest moment in Hollywood musical history. They worked for 2 weeks on just the arm movements so they would be unisom. They were the hardest working dancers ever. Ellie danced 12 hours daily. She said she would rather dance then eat. Fred was the ultimate perfectionist and worked at a routine until he got it right and even made blue prints.
@okdaiker Post the video. I'd love to see someone today who can do this! Make sure you are dancing in unison with a partner. I think more kids should take tap dancing.
@sckvevrbdy Formally they spent 3 weeks on this dance.2 of those weeks were spent on arm movements. They were the 2 hardest working people ever in dance. Ellie was called the iron lady because she spent 12 hours daily dancing. Each person would say, "Could we do that just one more time." As Ellie said when honoring Fred receiving his lifetime acheivement award in 1980. We'd still be there 1940 to 1981 if somebody hadn't said it's just fine. But Mr Astaire I wish we could do it just 1 more time.
Ellie was a great person as much as the greatest dancer in the world. I have 31 comments about that from her fellow entertainers. Ellie became an ordained minister in her 50's. She spoke this and practiced " Unconditional forgiveness leads to unconditional love leads to unconditional happiness. ' Also she oft times said," What we are are God's gifts. What we become is our gift back to God. Never had an enemy in Hollwood and never said an ill word about anybody. Wish more were like that!
Ellie saved MGM from bankruptcy twice. They would build a grandstand for all to watch during her routines. That was reserved ONLY for Ellie. Arturo Toscanini the famous conductor was there for one session when he traveled west.. He was so taken by her he said this. "There are 3 things I will take with me always.; The granduer of the Grand Canyon, the glory of a sunset, and Eleanor Powell dancing." As Sammmy Davis Jr. said," Quite frankly she was the very best." I could give many more quotes.
When Ellie started an impromptu dance instruction in the 70's attended by Robert Osborne(TBS) and other aspiring performers Fayard Nicholas often attended and even instructed. He was always in awe of Ellie and would tell the whole class she was the greatest dancer ever! She wanted to teach him forward pirouttes that she was the ONLY one doing, but Fayard knew it would take to long to learn and as he said with a smile did not want to public to know how much better Ellie was then the rest of us.
When they choregraphed this number they had to figure how to keep Ellie from dancing to fast for Fred. In the finally Ellie covered about 20% more ground though both did the same amount of spins. In the opening session not seen here Ellie was spinning at least 4 times whereby Fred was a prop. Ellie was famous for her backward bends touching the palm of her hand to the floor, lifting her leg 180d. over her heads, and pirourettes all are unrivaled even today. She practiced 12 hours a day.
Fred was a ballroom tapper as seen in the Ginger movies. Precise and elegant was his fortay. Black dancers are almost always physical and rhythm dancers. They are more acrobatic and faster. You cannot measure the 2 with each other. Apples and oranges. Fred called the Nicholas Brothers the best (physical dancers) of all. He called Ellie the greatest ( she could do it all- acrobatic ,rhythm , ballot ) dancer ever. Comparing Fred to rhythm dancing is next to impossible. It's a different disipline.
@schutzenhaus - I am a very good dancer! No, I don't tap and don't need to! Like most blacks, I have rhythm and I can dance, BUT I don't lie and do not try to exalt black people when they don't deserve it like racist whites do!
One of the greatest dance sequences ever filmed. So, what's with the lousy copy? Doesn't somebody have a DVD that they can direct-digital transfer instead of this ABOMINATION?
Ellie danced with Bill Robinson as a young teenager at Manhatten parties. She was not a tapper at that point. B R helped her become a tapper. She also had 10 lessons with Jack Donahue. At age 16 and10 months with just one year of tapping she was culled the queen of tap in the east. That is a stunning rise to the top and not even 17 years old. It is UNRIVALED in any other venue. She did things that nobody else could/would do that is why Fred was terrified to dance with the great Eleanor Powell.
@hajune - Ellie did things no one else could do......really.....you are out of your mind! What the hell is that woman doing so great. I see her dance and she is boring and just a learned tap dancer. What in the hell is she doing that NO ONE ELSE can do? Come on now white liar.... explain to me in detail what she is doing that the other tap dancers (who are much greater than her) is doing that THEY can't do!
@crazydaysful You are a very troubled person and very bigoted. Hope you find the uncondition forgiveness and unconditional love that leads to unconditional happiness that Ellie believed and practiced. Fayard Nicholas called her the greatest dancer ever and often. He learned moves from her but not the forward pirourettes she did. He laughed when she tried to teach him knowing it would take to long to master them. Sammy Davis introduces Ellie(on you tube from That's Entertainment) as the greatest.
The Berry Brothers and Nicholas Brothers thought Ellie to be the best dancer ever as Fred and Ann Miller and at least 25 more I have documented. Ellie got black dancers roles and jobs at the studio. In the Fascinating Rhythm dance she insisted the piono players be black and that the amazing Berry Brothers introduce the dance segment. Fayard N. often times would sit in the grandstand to watch her rehease. Later in life he taught with her and told the whole class she was the greatest dancer ever.
@hajune - you white people are so stupid you actually think that the Berry and Nicholas brothers and Sammy Davis said that woman who they all greatly out-danced her is the best dancer ever and you think they were not lying or just joking! You are ought of your mind if even they did say that on "white TV" to please white people (who knows if they did) but clearly they were lying their ass off and trying to appease evil white people. They know they are excessively better dancers than her.
@hajune - you stupid evil white people actually want to believe that that woman is the greatest dancer -- get of these damn comments with you white bullshit! Even Fred Astaire was a much better dancer than her and he could not even outdance the blacks! You hideous crazy white people! Jump off this planet with your "white bullshit" mess! I dance better than that damn woman!
@crazydaysful The stupid evil white person as you say, Eleanor Powell did more for black dancers then anybody. She insisted Willie Coven be made head dance instructor at MGM. She danced with Bill Robinson often at many parties and named him Godfather to her son. Fayard Nicholas taught classes with Ellie and thanked her for the many moves she introduced to him, while often calling her the greatest dancer ever. She got the Berry Brothers and black piano players lead rolls in Fascinating Rhythm.
@hajune - first of all you keep trying to push that lie that Ellie was the greatest dancer and anyone with eyes can see she is not at all and never will be. You whites love to steal or copy from blacks and then call yourselves the greatest at what blacks are the greatest at - but you will never succeed in your bull. Fayard did not call her the greatest tap dancer and if he did make a mistake and said those words he only did it because a white person who owns the shows asked him to do it!
@rondeco30 - You keep you stupid nothing ass over there in the UK and please don't ever come to America with your socialism brain and stupidity! Hey--- and tell that ragged queen of England to give America's money back that Obama and the Clintons and the other fake American's Presidents stole from us and gave to your poor nothing coungtry and now your country like other socialism communism countries got America's money! I want our money back UK!
These whites Eleanor and Astaire are just black people copy cats - they are copying every move that blacks invented and they are not the best or the greatest. No one could ever and will ever beat black great tap dancers - the blacks invented it and are unmatchable. Whites love to copy blacks and then say these boring dancing copy cats are the best! BULL shit! After you see the Nicholas brother all you do is laugh at this two whites because they are nothing!
tiempos de 30 - 40 antes de 2 da guerra mundial, toda una epoca fascinanatecon dos de los mejores bailadores de tap de todos los tiempos, fueron unicos.- olvidense de G ROGERS.
This was the first million dollar movie ever. Fred was coming off 2 Ginger/Fred losers. He was 41 and many thought his dancing days were waning. Ellie was MGM's super star. She got 2 extra numbers including a ballot dance and got the 1st 2:40 to herself in this dance and the segment not shown.( See Daily Motion). Fred practiced 12 hours a day to catch up to Ellie. Both choregraphed the greatest partner dance ever
@hajune - of course it was the first million dollar movie ever because after blacks caused all the wealth in this country and whites stole it and made sure they kept it all from the blacks, then the whites had all the money to put their boring copy cat nothing little-rhythm dancers on TV. Blacks, Nicholas Brothers, Bill Robinson, and so much more were the greatest dancers but they were not allowed much on TV! White people need to stop trying to be king of black people
@crazydaysful Are you stupid or ignorant. You are certainly a racist . IT IS WELL DOCUMENTED what black dancers of her era thought of her. That can be seen on You tube. As Sammy Davis called her the greatest dancer ever, oh ignorant prejudice one. Bill Robinson who was her sons godfather and danced with Ellie when she was a teen allowed her do to his step dance( on you tube) and NOBODY ELSE because he thought her to be the only one worthy of it. You idiot there was no TV in BR's era.
Keep seeing people talk about Fred but not Ellie. She was the better dancer.( That was even according to Fred) He was terrifed to dance with her . She was the first female rhythm tapper ever and paved the way for females. She got the lions share of dances in the first $million movie ever.He was a ballroom tapper. He had to step up his game to dance with the great Eleanor Powell( See Daily Motion).
Ellie got the first 2:40 to herself. She was that good. She did things no other dancers were capable . In the first segment ,not seen here she would spin (3x) while Fred stayed stationary .She could touch the floor backwards , spun like she was on ice skates and tapped faster then anybody. Fred admitted he got outworked by her which was all but impossible. She created more then 100 abstract steps which is more then all other dancers of the era combined.
Fred had just come off 2 box office losers with Ginger. He went to MGM and though intimidated by Ellie did the largest and 1st $Million dance movie ever. No expense was spared. The mirrows were done at the studio because nobody would do them. The movie , in the planning for a year turned into the most skilled performance ever done between the 2 great ones! Since both did their own chorelography they found a middle ground. The result was a stunning performance!
Sometime soon I will give out some intersting info about Fayard Nicholas of the Nicholas Brothers and his relationship with Ellie. He learned many steps from her in their day , and openly called her the greatest ever. They taught an impromptu class, sometimes together. The list of those thinking she was the greatest is a long one. What go's under the radar screen is her ability to CREATE different complicated moves and bring them together. She made it look easy when it was anything but.
This is amazing to watch! The year: 1940 (69 years ago). Frank Sinatra narrated it and it was filmed in one unedited camera shot. It is considered by many to be the best dance scene ever filmed.
Kind of funny, I just viewed Frank doing a scene with Rita Hayworth singing the Lady Is A Tramp ( on U Tube). Watch it, it is GOOD. Rita was Frank's favorite to perform with. I mention this because of the 29 dancing partners Fred had he said Rita was his favorite to dance with. Both Fred and Frank had great taste.
How good was Ellie. In the That's Entertaiment series she was one of a few featured in all of them. Sinatra and Sammy Davis Jr were in awe or her. Fred admitted he was intimidated by her. She was solo in the 1st 2:45 of this scene. It was the most expensive ever done and the first million dollar dance production. Ellie danced 12 hours a day and said she would rather dance then eat. She once said we are God's gifts, what we become is our gift back to God. It was our gift too see this routine.
@lizzyvance I read that they each thought highly of the others, so I don't think that they had any rivalry amongst themselves. Would that we had more like all of them now!
That to is an amazing routine. They used a lot of props in that one although the over all speed of there tap steps are not as fast as Fred & Eleanor. The Nicholas brothers routine was much more difficult, but their timing is amazing.
In the Air Force My Room mate use to tell his friends DON'T DANCE DON'T DANCE, DON'T YALL DANCE . Don't make him dance!
If you see him Dance I guarantee you, Everyone of you Jokers, Will be looking for a place to sit down! IF THESE TWO WORLD GREATEST TAP DANCERS SAW THE (NICHOLAS BROTHERS) in the house, I guarantee you They'd Be LOOKING for a PLACE TO SIT DOWN!
They really are magical. She is defiantly talented. Well Fred is to. I was watching her video of her dancing and she kicked her leg up while she was dancing like it was nothing. I remember thinking omg. She is amazing. They dont make them like this any more in Hollywood. Sad ): oh well its great to have these legends ;)
Oh yeah, you will me friend. Please type in "Nicholas Brothers In Stormy Weather". and be prepared for the ultimate elegance, class, charisma, technique all that in one single take. There is probably no better dance act ever recorded. Astaire once said it himself. Still, I gotta love those two as well. Two of the greats.
@saved2play He actually said that in his autobiography. He was terrified to dance with her when he came to MGM. She was a rhythm tapper and he was a ball room tapper. He took lessons from John Bubbles the father of rhythm tap. On the other hand Ellie oft times tapped with John Bubbles. She was doing things no other dancer could do.
@saved2play Please don't say what he should or shouldn't have said. He said what he said. Powell is incredible, every bit as good as him, but please don't correct him. His time, his place, their dance. Let it go.
They just don't make dancers like this anymore....Astaire would be horrified at the sleazy stuff on Dancing with the Stars... and So you Think you can dance...
Too much bumping and grinding.... they say this is FAMILY entertainment??? it's fornication to music....
Ummmm....to the kid GS1993, I consider myself in my youth among the better dancers I've ever seen (and so do many who'd seen me then), so I consider myself more qualified than most in saying that Fred and El were ASTOUNDING in their lightness, line, syncopation, and audience connection. Fred's hands alone mock the self-absorbed, over-determined gymnastics which many kids confuse with successful dance. For dancers of my generation (like MJ), Fred WAS it.
This was the greatest duet tap number ever put on film. Powell was Astaire's best tap partner -- they were the tops.
As Sammy Davis, Jr. wrote in his book "Hollywood In A Suitcase"..most of the taps were recorded live, not dubbed later, as was the usual case. Astaire's best screen partner was Ginger -- as has been written before, He gave her class..She gave him sex appeal.
shuster's supportive comment, below, also supportive of Fred Astaire not "being crap" in comparison is marked as spam and is not spam. I think there is a conspiracy going on.
I have removed my previous comment defending Fred and Ellie against GDS1993's observation that they are crap compared to anything Savion Glover ever did. I acerbically suggested they look at Glover's video with Kenny G. My comment received negative ratings. So, I can only surmize that these people agree with GDS1993.
Gene Kelly said people call him and Fred Astaire Tap dancers because they didn't know what else to call them. Kelly (of many styles) and Astaire and and the Nicholas Brothers and even Powell were cinematic dancers concerned with visual presentation and line. To compare them with some "tap master" or to talk about who taps faster or more complexly in a hunched buck does not apply. As a cinematic dance presentation this is a masterpiece.
Don't forget the whole package of craftsmanship cited by Sinatra: the set, direction, camerawork. Then, there is the Cole Porter piece played by the MGM musicians. MGM even fired and poured the glass sections for the floor themselves when they could find no glass company that could do it.
Tap is only part of the mix here. These two are dancers first and foremost, using their whole bodies while making use of tap as part of the means to an end.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Broadway tap is not even anywhere near as good as anyone out now or any old school hoofers best tap dance ever my ass Jason samuels smith, Savion Glover, Bill Bojangles, Gregory Hines, Baakari Wilder, And so on... any dance that any of those guys ever did is exceptionally better than this crap
Are you actually saying that Fred Astaire's dance is "crap"? How can you be so ignorant? Fred Astaire is one of the most influential dancer/choreographer of all time. Most of the dancers that you listed (with the exception of Bill Bojangles Robinson) were greatly influenced by Astaire.
Tap dancing has evolved so much through the years. Just because you don't like Astaire's style doesn't mean that you can just dismiss him.
Breathtaking

sckvevrbdy 1 year ago

So enjoyed watching this! Thought I would post it on my facebook!

Ellie saved MGM from bankruptcy twice. They would build a grandstand for all to watch during her routines. That was reserved ONLY for Ellie. Arturo Toscanini the famous conductor was there for one session when he traveled west.. He was so taken by her he said this. "There are 3 things I will take with me always.; The granduer of the Grand Canyon, the glory of a sunset, and Eleanor Powell dancing." As Sammmy Davis Jr. said," Quite frankly she was the very best." I could give many more quotes.
hajune 1 year ago
When Ellie started an impromptu dance instruction in the 70's attended by Robert Osborne(TBS) and other aspiring performers Fayard Nicholas often attended and even instructed. He was always in awe of Ellie and would tell the whole class she was the greatest dancer ever! She wanted to teach him forward pirouttes that she was the ONLY one doing, but Fayard knew it would take to long to learn and as he said with a smile did not want to public to know how much better Ellie was then the rest of us.
hajune 1 year ago
When they choregraphed this number they had to figure how to keep Ellie from dancing to fast for Fred. In the finally Ellie covered about 20% more ground though both did the same amount of spins. In the opening session not seen here Ellie was spinning at least 4 times whereby Fred was a prop. Ellie was famous for her backward bends touching the palm of her hand to the floor, lifting her leg 180d. over her heads, and pirourettes all are unrivaled even today. She practiced 12 hours a day.
hajune 1 year ago

She did things that nobody else could/would do that is why Fred was terrified to dance with the great Eleanor Powell.
hajune 1 year ago
@hajune - Ellie did things no one else could do......really.....you are out of your mind! What the hell is that woman doing so great. I see her dance and she is boring and just a learned tap dancer. What in the hell is she doing that NO ONE ELSE can do? Come on now white liar.... explain to me in detail what she is doing that the other tap dancers (who are much greater than her) is doing that THEY can't do!
crazydaysful 1 year ago
@crazydaysful You are a very troubled person and very bigoted. Hope you find the uncondition forgiveness and unconditional love that leads to unconditional happiness that Ellie believed and practiced. Fayard Nicholas called her the greatest dancer ever and often. He learned moves from her but not the forward pirourettes she did. He laughed when she tried to teach him knowing it would take to long to master them. Sammy Davis introduces Ellie(on you tube from That's Entertainment) as the greatest.
hajune 1 year ago
The Berry Brothers and Nicholas Brothers thought Ellie to be the best dancer ever as Fred and Ann Miller and at least 25 more I have documented. Ellie got black dancers roles and jobs at the studio. In the Fascinating Rhythm dance she insisted the piono players be black and that the amazing Berry Brothers introduce the dance segment. Fayard N. often times would sit in the grandstand to watch her rehease. Later in life he taught with her and told the whole class she was the greatest dancer ever.
hajune 1 year ago
@hajune - you white people are so stupid you actually think that the Berry and Nicholas brothers and Sammy Davis said that woman who they all greatly out-danced her is the best dancer ever and you think they were not lying or just joking! You are ought of your mind if even they did say that on "white TV" to please white people (who knows if they did) but clearly they were lying their ass off and trying to appease evil white people. They know they are excessively better dancers than her.
crazydaysful 1 year ago
@hajune - you stupid evil white people actually want to believe that that woman is the greatest dancer -- get of these damn comments with you white bullshit! Even Fred Astaire was a much better dancer than her and he could not even outdance the blacks! You hideous crazy white people! Jump off this planet with your "white bullshit" mess! I dance better than that damn woman!
crazydaysful 1 year ago
@crazydaysful The stupid evil white person as you say, Eleanor Powell did more for black dancers then anybody. She insisted Willie Coven be made head dance instructor at MGM. She danced with Bill Robinson often at many parties and named him Godfather to her son. Fayard Nicholas taught classes with Ellie and thanked her for the many moves she introduced to him, while often calling her the greatest dancer ever. She got the Berry Brothers and black piano players lead rolls in Fascinating Rhythm.
hajune 1 year ago
@hajune - first of all you keep trying to push that lie that Ellie was the greatest dancer and anyone with eyes can see she is not at all and never will be. You whites love to steal or copy from blacks and then call yourselves the greatest at what blacks are the greatest at - but you will never succeed in your bull. Fayard did not call her the greatest tap dancer and if he did make a mistake and said those words he only did it because a white person who owns the shows asked him to do it!

Both choregraphed the greatest partner dance ever
hajune 1 year ago
@hajune - of course it was the first million dollar movie ever because after blacks caused all the wealth in this country and whites stole it and made sure they kept it all from the blacks, then the whites had all the money to put their boring copy cat nothing little-rhythm dancers on TV. Blacks, Nicholas Brothers, Bill Robinson, and so much more were the greatest dancers but they were not allowed much on TV! White people need to stop trying to be king of black people
crazydaysful 1 year ago
@crazydaysful Are you stupid or ignorant. You are certainly a racist . IT IS WELL DOCUMENTED what black dancers of her era thought of her. That can be seen on You tube. As Sammy Davis called her the greatest dancer ever, oh ignorant prejudice one. Bill Robinson who was her sons godfather and danced with Ellie when she was a teen allowed her do to his step dance( on you tube) and NOBODY ELSE because he thought her to be the only one worthy of it. You idiot there was no TV in BR's era.

larryboyofok 1 year ago
Ellie got the first 2:40 to herself. She was that good. She did things no other dancers were capable . In the first segment ,not seen here she would spin (3x) while Fred stayed stationary .She could touch the floor backwards , spun like she was on ice skates and tapped faster then anybody. Fred admitted he got outworked by her which was all but impossible. She created more then 100 abstract steps which is more then all other dancers of the era combined.
hajune 1 year ago

For dancers of my generation (like MJ), Fred WAS it.
fairalways 2 years ago 4
This was the greatest duet tap number ever put on film. Powell was Astaire's best tap partner -- they were the tops.
As Sammy Davis, Jr. wrote in his book "Hollywood In A Suitcase"..most of the taps were recorded live, not dubbed later, as was the usual case. Astaire's best screen partner was Ginger -- as has been written before, He gave her class..She gave him sex appeal.

As a cinematic dance presentation this is a masterpiece.
walt1896 2 years ago 3
Don't forget the whole package of craftsmanship cited by Sinatra: the set, direction, camerawork. Then, there is the Cole Porter piece played by the MGM musicians. MGM even fired and poured the glass sections for the floor themselves when they could find no glass company that could do it.
walt1896 2 years ago
Tap is only part of the mix here. These two are dancers first and foremost, using their whole bodies while making use of tap as part of the means to an end.
