I was a sibson fan and he was the second best middleweight in the world prior to this fight but on this night he met the best middle weight ever in a bad mean mood .
For a guy some see as a brawler, Hagler boxed masterfully. He consistently worked behind a stiff jab, punched from angles, punched in combination, and gave Sibson a lot of movement which frustrated him and had him missing a lot. Great boxing from a great boxer.
You guys don't know shit about boxing or how to evaluate a fighter. Leonard was just as old as Hagler. Hagler lost that fight to Leonard because he wouldn't engage him fully! He followed Leonard around the ring. He paused when Leonard attacked, He waited. Hagler gave the fight away for lack of effort. When Hagler did attack he was effective and almost knocked Leonard out! But Hagler was weary of Leonards speed so he followed Leonard for most of the fight! HAGLER GAVE THE FIGHT AWAY! PERIOD!
@vincespell rubbish, leonard said he wanted to fight Hagler after he had a war with Mugabi! Your comment Leonard was the same age doesn"t stand up, Ray was fresher, Hagler never took 5yrs out! I do believe Leonard nicked the decision, but wouldn"t of beaten the Hagler that smashed Tommy Hearns....
i agree Sweetd32, but i still think Hagler won against leonard. Leonard ran the entire time, taunted, and and never fought hagler straight up. Hagler was the greatest middleweight ever and one of the greatest boxers of all time. He's my favorite middleweight.
Hagler... in, out, side to side, what movement and never off balance once. I've never seen a fighter look so comfortable in EITHER the southpaw or orthodox stance, the 'complete package' if you like. Tony Sibson, what a game effort, he never gave up. A great fight contested by a true challenger and a true champion.
Looks as if Hagler's pursuing a strategy of using his footwork and throwing a lot of straight punches to keep outside more than he usually would, presumably to make full use of his 6-inch reach advantage over Sibson.
Hagler had a full arsenal; he could fight on the inside, on the outside; strong enough to brawl with you, quick enough to box with you...about as complete a fighter as they come
Sibbo has a load of harbourside property in Weymouth. He used to come into our local pub the Sailors Return. I remember one night some drunken bloke was trying to kick off on Tony. Sibbo handled the situation in the most polite manner possible. I really don't think the drunken guy knew who he was trying to wind up but fortunately for him he was asked to leave.
Don't think it would have been much of a fight anyway.
remember this well, i was 14, was rooting 4 sibbo, he gave it a blast but i didnt think he could do it, hagler was in a different league, fair play to him tho, brave hard man
Sibson was a great English boxer but he was just out boxed by one of the all time greats here. Great era for the MW division this. When Champions fought all comers..
sibson was one hell of a fighter, great defense, speed, good combination puncher and could crack, but hagler just humbled him, that says a lot about how great hagler was, Sibson would have been champ a long reigning champ in this era for sure, he just came along at the wrong time and who ever said that calzaghe is greater than hagler must be injecting crack, calzaghe shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as hagler.
sibson was one hell of a fighter, great defense, speed, good combination puncher and could crack, but hagler just humbled him, that says a lot about how great hagler was, sibson would have been champ a long reigning champ in this era for sure, he just came along at the wrong time and who ever said that calzaghe is greater than hagler must be injecting crack, calzaghe shouldn't even be mentioned in the same sentence as hagler.
you see when hagler turned orthodox. started hitting him with those right power bombs. it was all over, i heard he was naturally right handed that turned southpaw. that's why that right jab always cutting people.
Hagler steps in with his right foot and lands that hard jab with his entire bodyweight behind it. He is very good in doing that, I saw it in other fights like against Minter. Very effective, opens that cut above the eye and causes much damage.
A masterful performance by a peak Marvin Hagler. He demonstated his boxing skill here as he picked off + wore down Sibson who was a dangerous close range fighter. Hagler was a complete boxer- fighter, with no obvious weakness: boxing ability, tactically astue, KO power in both hands, iron chin, stamina+courage. He was a more exciting to watch than Monzon. Of the later champions Hopkins+Toney would have been competitve. In terms of all time great middleweights Marvin Hagler must be a top 3 ...
Hagler was a revelation to me in this fight. Sibson was a good fighter, but barely got a touch. The champ was in a phase where he got better each fight, showing things you never suspected he could do: here it was the dancing and the lateral movement. I'm convinced he was a better fighter than against Minter in this fight. I remenmber the age thing too, how suddenly he was 2 years younger: we all thought he'd smash Monzon's record with ease.
every time hagler went into the ring he was in fantastic condition. a true professional and a credit to boxing. if he was around today he would've destroyed pavlik and taylor. as much as i respect them it would have gone down that way
hagler was the greatest of his generation and when he had his belt 'stolen' by leonard it was the biggest injustice the fight game has ever seen! hagler took the fight to leonard and leonard knicked the last few 2nds off each round, hagler clearly won the fight & thats why he never stepped in the ring again!!!
@Sweetd32 wow, what an utterly retarded thing to say. leonard cam back from a three year layoff to fight hagler while hagler was active, so wouldn't it be the other way around?? moron.
@vdentjr Leonard admitted he waited to fight Hagler until he'd gotten older and had lost his edge. Watch it yourself in the ESPN film of Hagler. Leonard discusses it in the build up to that fight...ya' stupid-ass.
honestly, know this will draw howls, but hagler never looked that awesome, just liek a super strong club fighter, who got hit alot!!i wudda like to see him v another guy like that b-hop,or fullmer,or hurricane carter, dick tiger..i dont think he cudda beat monzon n definitely not roy jones in his prime..just not that impressed with speed, power, boxing "skill"just a super tough, very well conditioned guy but against some of these others..
Yes you did draw howls! Marvin Hagler is without doubt one of the greatest 160lb + pound for pound boxers of all time. A complete boxer. Always superbly conditioned, iron chin, KO power in both hands, a ferocius fighter + very good boxer offensively+defensively + as he showed against a powerful Sibson. I think he would have ouptointed Monzon, He would have been too powerful for Fulmer. Of the later Champions Hopkins+ Toney would have been good fights. I suspect Jones would have been TKO'd..
nothing wrong with sibbo's heart here - he took shots and traded with 'the' man - all respect to Tony - I dont think toney or jones would have faired much better - despite what the asshole below wrote - fullmer FFS ??? Carter ??? Monzons upright european style would have been tailo made for hagler - jones bt more so joe calzahge wuld have iven Marvin plenty of trouble with skills and movement - B-Hop ??? no fuckin way - hagler would have retired him easier than welsh joe did .
He smashed our Tone, but the best warrior I've ever seen, Marvin is. Not even Tommy landing nukes on his chin for 3 rounds could stop him. A Boxing Terminator.
I remember reading in Ring Magazine once that Sibson tried to shake hands with Hagler at a press conference and Hagler said to him, "If you touch me again, I'll knock you out right now" or something, and psyched Sibson out. Didn't matter really, he would have knocked him out anytime they fought.
whoever mentioned Hatton and Mayweather. Hagler was in the era of fighters. Fighters. Guys who fought like Hagler/Hearns/Duran/Leonard. Mayweather is a big mouthed mover.. We have seen them before. They win but they never do anything we remember.
Right, I wanna see what happens when someone really clocks him and hes gotta fight. up to now he hasnt really had to suck it up and show if he has that rare quality of heart and a will to win under adversity
Hagler fought the perfect fight. For all you ignorant yanks dissing Sibson as a "bum", Hagler knew full well that if he tried to mix it with Sibson in the early rounds there was a good chance of him being K.O'd, such was the power of Sibsons left hook. He showed Sibson a lot of respect and fought to win,not to show off.
Yea Rocinante is right people say Hgler coulnd't hurt people with one punch, but he could. I've seen him pretty much take people out with his right from a southpaw stance.
That right hand lead was golden for Hagler. That punch alone was enough to put opponents in deep trouble. No one ever figured out how to avoid it, including Leonard.
sibson got dumb and came in close to slug, doin better when at long range and moving and trying to jab,tho that eye wudda stopped him sooner or later..but who cud beat hagler in his prime?
When your opponent has such a reach advantage the way Hagler did, you have no choice BUT to get in close, just to get into punching range. The aggressor is usually in the centre of the ring as Sibson was and did all the chasing and going forward, but Hagler circled him and kept getting his punches off first and then moving.
look at the three punches in round 5 (slow motion after the round) so fast, precise and powerfull on Sibson's left eye... wow, Hagler really demolishes him
At a time when European fighters generally sucked, "Sibo" was actually a pretty tough customer. A decent man outside the ring, I thought that he might eventually cop a world title, but lost on a lateround kayo to Frank Tate(super-middle). NO-ONE was gonna beat Marvelous Marvin in his prime. He was the greatest all-round boxer I've ever seen. I always beleived that if you were going to build a boxer from scratch, and go piece by piece, you would end up with Marvin Hagler.
AMEN! HAGLER HAD IT ALL! SKILL, STRENGTH, POWER in BOTH HANDS a STEELCHIN, ENDLESS STAMINA and an IRONWILL! He was UTTERLY FEARLESS! Never DUCKED ANYONE!
