It's not that most were conscripts. It's the SS that were the really horrible troops. Average German (Wehrmacht) soldiers were farmers, workers, they didn't care about ideologies. It's the Russian campaign that destroyed them. Technological superiority couldn't match the sheer number of weapons and men the Russians pumped out.

In the begining of the war the German soldiers were probably the best trained soldiers in the world, there is no hiding that. If you watch Saving Private Ryan, you'll see that the U.S soldiers catch just as mutch led as the German soldiers.

This DID happen in real life. The U.S American shooter was Shifty Powers and the runner was Carwood Lipton. This happened after parts the 101st Airborne took the town of Foy.
