  • I want this video on my KP200 phone.

  • Your video is a favorite on Madrid

  • yay

  • great!!!!!!!!!!

  • Que sensacional...

  • fun activity! We saw him doing it at the Levis Film WOrkshop. Tried it ourselves at our local animation class, but couldn't get it to sync right? Try, try again...

  • Awesome kurwa! :D

  • This is great stuff!!! and i would like to try it with my students. I want to know how many pictures or images are needed and at which speed. Thank you so much.

  • jim lefevre, you are magical. : ) thank you.

  • would that only work on a turntable that speed?

  • @01hasa If you change the speed of the disc you'd have to change the amount of images on it so this only works at 45 rpm... Annoyingly changing the amount of images on it changes the amount of space you have for each frame and 45 was the best middle ground.

  • would it still work if you use a naked eye instead of a camera?

  • @01hasa Unfortunately the only way it would work with the naked eye is if you had a stroboscope flashing at the smae speed the camera takes pictures. Or maybe if you hade a tube with slits around it that you looked through although not sure if that would work.... worth a try?

  • @jimlefevre thanks, I am trying to make one myself.

  • Great stuff! I'm sure you told the revolving set of people this several times over.... What shutter speed was it?

  • @cuppacreations The camera's shutter speed is whacked up to about 1/1000 or 1/2000 if that's helpful?

  • @jimlefevre i'm experimenting with camera's and this effect at the moment. i'm using a 7d, but am looking for one that can be left for a whole day (7d turns itself off every 30 mins). what camera did you use?

  • @jimlefevre i'm experimenting with camera's and this effect at the moment. i'm using a 7d, but am looking for one that can be left for a whole day (7d turns itself off every 30 mins). what camera did you use?

  • For a minute...a role changing like the movie "Sliding doors": Technics now is a pioneer of the Celluloid and Lumiere is a famous turntable maker ... :)

    Just for a brief laugh.....

Great and Well done Job! It's very intersting

    Wish a great 2011!

    Regards...Andrea

  • Really nice idea - round and round we go - help - I can't get off! Keep at this Jim. Sophie Keir

  • You are an inspiration!

Looking for an avenue to explore new creativity - found it!

Animation is the most amazing medium

One can create a new universe, psyche....

You revived the predecessor to Fleischer Bros, Disney et all The possibilities of these fascinating loops are endless.

    A renaissance of animation basics

15 seconds could implant ideas to alter the thought processes of countless individuals

    This medium is perfect

    Thanks

  • is the effect visible to the naked eye, or only on cameras with certain shutter speeds?

  • it actually looks a whole lot more real to the naked eye, but this might be a different case

  • oops never mind, this is only with the shutter i think, but the same effect occurs to the eye with strobe lights:)

  • simply brilliant, thought of doing this but never got round to it, now i will! :)

  • Actually, I really like being able to hear you talk in the background. It adds a surreal quality to the video and sort of turns it into its own artwork. :) VERY amazing work!

  • Cool!

  • Amazing!!!!!!!!!!

  • this is awesome! and great song to put with it! I haven't heard this song before.. it makes me really like Elliot Smith though, lol.

  • stumbled, this is AWESOME!

  • Wooooow pretty cool!!!!!!!!!!

  • What an absolute genius!

The sound track gets a bit repetitive when you've repeated the video a few hundred times :) Thats a compliment haha

  • Amazing :D

    very talented!!

  • we have a genius on our hands ladies and gents! Absolutely stunning!

  • how..?

  • that was friggn cool...\,,./(';)

  • this is so darn cool

especially the one with stickmans passing boxes

  • wow i ddnt think this would be cool

  • :D - I was there - there were some very interesting exhibits, including this one. I wish V&A would do it again.

  • This is lovely, I think the music with the talking in the background is nice and relaxing. I don't get the people that are upset you can't see it in person but I am guessing he has the camera setup there so you can look at it in person thru the camera? Most things that are odd like this have to be looked at with aids, like stereoscopic glasses. Oh well... Keep making the wonderful videos.

  • That's some crazy stuff right there.

  • Absolutely brilliant.

  • Pretty amazing, I love the music choice too!

  • v.kool!

  • cool

  • this really made my day

    +fav

  • wow that's neat

  • very cool

  • Hahahah this is great. Love the little guys passing the parcel :D

    Good stuff :)

  • dood,pass the bong

  • passed

  • that is pretty great.

  • Wow, that was pretty special

  • Faved!

  • Really loving the quaintness of the cork/MDF base on turn table. Take that Pixar. Also, the shutter speed has a nice affect on the way your hand looks as it interacts with the animation.

  • this is fantastic!

    i so want one!

  • Never ceases to amaze me, the wonders humanity comes up with.

  • This is some of the coolest shit I've seen in a LONG time. Awesome work!

  • Annoying music.

  • i think that was elliots better stuff

  • I meant the way it's used.

  • is that eliot smith playing in the background?

  • Description on the right - "MUSIC - ELLIOT SMITH - IN THE LOST AND FOUND"

  • this only works on video because the video framerate is synced with the device, if this was real life we'd see all the frames in between, and it wouldn't turn out real nice.

  • No... it works in person when done with a strobe light.

  • no, It would still work in person if the light is conditioned right.

You need a room with only 1 light source. And that light source is flickering at a rate sync'ed with animation.

  • haha so cute when they are passing the box

  • Neato...

  • Oh this is awesome.

  • xkcd !

  • I've told you many times - this is really lovely, Jim.

    You are full of excellence.

  • elliot smith!!!

  • It's.. Gorgeous!

  • Does this scream XKCD-3D to anybody else?

  • XKCD-3D?

  • that is simply brilliant

  • Hey Jim,

Great work! Really unique. Amazing that the actual frames are REAL 3d cut outs too!

"it only works through the camera as it is the shutter of the camera and the frame rate (frames per second) that create the 'interruptions' needed..."

Does that mean that if one were watching the record player spin for real you wouldnt see the animation properly? If so thats a shame. Would love to see REAL 3D animation before my eyes!

  • That is truly wonderfull!!!

  • Fascinating technique, it looks magical.

  • df is dis shyt

  • how clever............

  • WOW AMAZING, But here is an idea, Make a large animation, and you could incase it, and only have a small box area showing, and it could play a looping anim. :D

  • if you want to see it on reality you should use a stroboscope, this is a really cool efect when you aplly it on a tap with watter dripping it.

  • Just wanted to say this video and concept is wonderful and hope you get more work.

I found this video via the blog ( binaryloadlifter com ) of the wonderful nude remix done by James Houston. He also linked to your video at interesting showing how it was done. Wish that one was a bit longer.

It's easy to get entranced at the way a turn table spins and this animation will always push my imagination. Thanks!

  • Cool video. Great choice of music too. Love Elliot Smith.

  • if you truly loved him, you would spell his name right.

  • Sorry, I missed a T. My bad. His first name wasn't really Elliott anyways.

  • Does this have the effect in person or just over video?

  • sleestack, it only works through the camera as it is the shutter of the camera and the frame rate (frames per second) that create the 'interruptions' needed...

  • The frame rate of a movie camera is about 28 fps, relatively close to that of the eye. I think it's probably apparent to both.

  • the eye doesn't have a frame rate.

  • No, but it does have a "shutter speed" of about 1/30 of a second which, no matter the frame rate, will probably correctly represent the animation. If the eye couldn't see it, why would they have bothered to build this?

  • If images are flashing at around 25-27 fps, then the eye will perceive them as continuous, yes. This doesn't apply with the above video, though, since REALITY doesn't have a frame rate (your eye certainly doesn't). Your eye would be observing at its maximum capacity, which doesn't correspond to any known frame rate. The effect would not be observed with the naked eye (in the same way, at least).

  • try 23.97 i believe it is

  • that's crazy. looks almost like stop animation. very cool.

  • jim?

"Please excuse my waffling over the top of it..."

If only I could've heard more of your so-called waffling.

Yes, nice song, for sure, but it would have been nicer to hear snippets of the song and snippets of you explaining the phantasmatron - it's a cakewalk for the likes of you, but it's damn near rocket science to a lot of people.

Not complaining, btw, i love it. Just saying.
