Back in 60's, all the brazilian stars (ALL OF THEM) was playing in Brazil. That because the dictature governing here at the time forbide that players that was playing outside Brazil, could representate Brazil on the national squad.

Es verdad que en el 70 las alineaciones ya se definían como 4-3-3. Pero, yo viví esa época y te puedo asegurar que nadie, pero nadie, veía a Pelé como mediocampista. Jamás se llegó a decir : "Pelé es medio creativo" o "Pelé forma la media cancha de Brasil o del Santos" . Brasil se manejaba de una manera sui-generis. Si ves los partidos del 70 verías que Rivelino jugaba mas atrasado que Pelé y casí nunca pisaba el área. Para 1974, Rivelino ya se desempeñaba como el creativo de Brasil.

Brasil won the WC in 1958, 1962, and 1970 so obviously the best league in the world at that time was in Brasil not Europe. So Pele was playing against the best players in the world. In the 1980's when Maradona played the best leagues in the world were in Europe. So you can't say Pele played against the weak competition. Y Pelé NUNCA fue un delaterno, fue el 10, los delanteros en 1958 fueron Garrincha, Vavá y Zagalo y en 1970 fueron Tostão y Jairzinho. Su trabajo no fue hace goles y si primeramente CREAR goles, lo que hizo muchisimas veces, como en la final de 1970.

Sin embargo, Pelé sí era delantero, recueda que en aquellos tiempos se jugaba en 4-2-4, o sea cuatro de los jugadores eran considerados delanteros. Lo que pasa es que las funciones de entonces no coinciden con las de hoy. Pelé a veces era 9 de hoy, a veces 10, y si se movía a la banda era hasta carrilero. Además, Pelé también era capaz de ser defensa, recuperaba muchas pelotas.

Pele played in lower Brazilian and American squads in a time where there were 3 defenders in the back MAX. Games would often score as much as 5-7 goals per team. At the international level, Pele played on a team of greats that would have won anyway. Maradona playedon in great leagues and still scored goals. He took Napoli to win in Italy, and they were amateur. At the international, he played on a mediocre team that he LED to win the Mundial.

Best of his time? In Brazil? In USA? He played against team that were weak compared to the teams that dominated in Europe, that's why he had such scoring ability at the club level.
after the '70 World Cup, Brazil had lost all form on the back line.. losing both the Santos' and their allstar GK Gilmar.
Argentine squad in '78 was much different than in 86.. the players that had already played were retired (Ex. Kempes)

Pele beat all the dominant teams in Europe including Eusebio's Benefica in the championship finals on more than 1 ocasion. Maradona won by an internet poll which favoured because the poll was in 1999 only a few years after his retirement. The poll would be like comparing Messi with Garrincha most people would only know Messi than GArrincha.

That's exactly what i'm trying to say to you.
Back in 60's, all the brazilian stars (ALL OF THEM) was playing in Brazil. That because the dictature governing here at the time forbide that players that was playing outside Brazil, could representate Brazil on the national squad.
Besides, the monetary disparaty between Brazil and Europe at the time, was not too great. The difference of money making only grow up after 80s. ;) Do you understand now?

@marcioaso Either way, the Brazilian leagues didn't compare to the leagues in Europe, even in the 60s. Anyway, after Pele left Santos, he went to play with New York, again a weak team in a weaker league.
Not to mention during the time when Pele played, the game was more focused on offence and lacked defense, while during Maradona's time, they played a modern defensive game... and he still scored effectively. He even score the goal of the century against the best defense in the World.
