all that I have read has stated that the 3 did make it out sucessfully to Allied teritory. I remember reading that one man was caught on a train with his ID, he spoke descent German and when he asked his arrasting officer how he had known that he was an excapee the arresting officer said, in effect that "You are wearing the exact clothes that you have on in your ID picture. That doesn't happen in real life"

Because these were fellow airmen. POW camps were staffed with Luftwaffe and generally held nothing but shot-down airmen. So, despite being enemies, there was that level of "brotherhood."
