  • Jonathan Winters is one of the great comedians of his time who showed people that the FUNNIER COMEDY is among the ordinary everyday people, which is very different than the jokes told by the sophistication and refinedment of the high class people, like Jack Beny or Bob Hope. Though both Jack Benny and Bob Hope were great comedians too, but their style of comedy was in contrast with the great Jonathan Winters's style. Jonathan Winters created his jokes on the stage sopontaneously. he is amazing!

  • One thing you can definitely say about Jonathan Winters.... Dean Martin could never keep his composure around him. Dino is dying here! :-)

  • How could anybody dislike this.

  • We can't get clean comedy like this anymore on TV.

  • You can tell that these people respected, enjoyed and cared deeply for one another. This vid is a true work of genius.

  • I'm 22 years old......and I think this is fucking HILARIOUS!

    Jon Winters is a god.

  • Who was unfortunate enough to have to follow that?

  • This was probably Jonathan Winters' funniest performance on the Dean Martin Roasts!!!

  • He and Robin Williams are two of the few comics that can make me nearly split my sides laughing. Absolutely phenomenal....

  • I remember these shows when I was young. I never heard dean martin laugh so hard. I love when he says he just called him Frank. Pure clean humor.

  • one of the best!!! ever..just ask Robin Williams..he's the king of improv

  • I actually pity those who cannot find, and or appreciate the mind boggling humor of Jonathan Winters! One the most fantastic comedians that ever graced us.

  • Compare this roast to the crap they're doing for the roasts of people like Charlie Sheen... these comedians can't be matched.

  • @hecticdmc Yeah. I'd agree. The Charlie Sheen roast was just a complete waste of time. Somewhere along the line, being as vicious as you possibly can be became the order of the day. Jon Lovitz in particular seemed extremely uncomfortable with the whole thing. I'm sure he wishes he could turn back time and appear at one of these earlier roasts.

  • This was 100% complete nonsense but 1000% funny!

  • was the King?

    **IS** the King

  • This is genius.

  • Jonathan Winters was absolutley wonderful! What a delight that these moments have been saved.

  • I don't see where he's funny.

  • @SteamEqualsFAIL The gag is that all of what he is saying is complete nonsense. Winters is portraying a character that is not at all like him, some bumpkin, and putting Mr. Suave (Sinatra) in the most ridiculous situations, and it is all complete nonsense.

  • Jonathan Winters is simply a complete genius. You can't touch those improv skills.

  • What a sweet man and the funniest improv comic ever.

  • Man, that was hilarious! Made absolutely no sense, but it was freakin' funny!

  • JW, the very best. He is still keeping the girls at his bank in stitches

Robin Williams has at the most 1% of the talent and class of Mr Winters

Thank you so much Jonathan, God Bless You

  • GOLDEN AGE OF COMEDY. GOD BLESS THEM. . .

  • Wazzup???

  • Good grief that part about dinner and about being rolled made me laugh so hard I was crying. THE BEST.

  • How in the world could 9 people not like this, geez?

  • A clinic in comedy improv.

  • There is no school like old school gotta love this this is what comedy should be like!

  • You will never see anything like this again. This is from the good old days of America,, Im glad that I'm 55 years old.I feel sorry for the young people.

  • Love the comics of the past!

  • Love tge old comics of the past

  • Poor Dean was suffering from laughter, lol.

  • Humor is in the "Ear" of the beholder. It's an individual thing. What some find funny, others don't. But you have to give this man credit. He has a natural gift for improv., which the majority of the comics today, don't have. It's difficult to be a comic, even when you have writers helping you out. But imagine standing in a room full of people, and without a script and without missing a beat, pull that off. Check out "J.Winters, The Stick 1964 on Jack Parr". You will see improv at it's best.

  • the sleeper of comedy. jonathan winters is the best,... ew, ronald mcreagan.. (spit) my god. yuk.

  • dean martin CANT STOP LAUGHING,HOW FUNNY...

  • @PaintedTurtle001 Wow, somebody got way over defensive. Calm down, just because YOU don't know some of the people in the modern day roasts, doesn't mean they're "never-weres ". And "Lisa Tampon Belli" is not only grammatically incorrect but a horrible attempt at trying to be funny. A cunt joke is a bit better than a drunken racial slur. I simply stated I love them both and they are both awesome, act your age and move on with your life.

  • funniest guy of all time..dean martin..jonathan winters..both from OHIO..

  • one of the great comedic geniuses of all time.

  • Funny as heck. And NO F words. Go figure!

  • Johnny Winters is simplify brilliant!!! LOL

  • Today's roasts are disgusting. This is when comedians didn't need dick jokes to be hilarious.

  • @MrUltraworld :40-:50, what do you call that?

  • His recent interview on WTF is both awesome and humbling in every way.

  • Greatest Improv comic ever...and not annoying like Robin Williams. Jonothan Winters was the King.

  • @aitraining What about Don Rickles?

  • @aitraining Yes he was, and I can't help wondering even now why Drew Carey never had him on Who's Line.....

More people of the last 20 years need to be exposed to the KINGS so they can tell great talent when they see it...

  • @aitraining - odd to because Jonathan was Robin's comedy hero.

  • @RocktheStageNYC Once on Jonathon's show, the Winters and Robin were in Jonathon's attic. They were just picking things up and going off each other. Funniest thing I ever saw. Wish somebody would upload it!

  • I wouldn't doubt that he knew the character and had a small idea of what he was he was going to say...and made up 95% of the rest as he went along...is was that quick...probably still is.

  • why is comedy so dull and boring now?......these guys are the GREATEST OF ALL TIME!!!!!

  • I suspect it was all improv, he was well known for his improv.

  • Awesome !!!!:-)))))

  • outstanding

  • This is certainly the funniest bit of all the Dean Martin roasts! Jonathan Winters at his improvisational, inspired best! I watch this over and over and it never ceases to slay me! Elwood Suggins, Willis Mumford, Maudie Frickert, Tuffy Steeler and all the rest of the characters invented by Jonathan Winters seem as real to me as anyone I know.

God bless you, Jonathan, you are the greatest improv comedian ever!

  • Wow...thanks for your post......genius......

  • "that ole black magic" [snaps fingers] lol

  • Jonathan Winters. What a Gem of a man. REAL comedy right there.

  • It's JUST NOT FUNNY. Winters seems like a nice guy, but he's not saying or doing ANYTHING funny. It's just gibberish in a goofy voice.

  • @edwdixon5 are you stupid , have no sense of humor or appreciation for talent, brain dead, not human, a moron, unamerican, a communist, or a combination of all the above?

  • How in the world could ANYONE follow that?...Truly one of the greatest comedy performances of all time, but just WInters usual ...Still laughing !!!

  • Now that was comedy. Not the trash of today.

  • to the young cats watching this and i am one myself. this may look like a table full of old guys but each one of them was insanely talented in their prime and a couple were geniuses in their field. sinatea, welles, winters etc...

  • They used to have a lot of fun together...Fun to engage in the streets...Good guy's...

  • "Clapton is God?"

    No, Winters is God.

(Seeing Orson Welles and Milton Berle sharing a yuck is worth the price of admission.)

  • Love to see Frank laugh.

  • He's in a very funny movie --It's a Mad,Mad. World-- love this humor !!

    Bev

  • I haven't laughed that hard since the 80's. I forgot about all these great funny men and women.

  • Wonderfully innocent compared to the garbage of today, fantastic, brought back many memories!

  • "I have seen no food at all!" lol

  • @jostd48 That was a regular thing brought up by Jonathan during the roasts, that they never served any food

  • Being funny is a strange thing. Does one have to laugh in order to say something is funny? I believe the A F I had Some Like It Hot as the funniest movie (American?) ever made. I've seen it several times, enjoyed it, but there was not one time when I laugh out loud as I watched it. Laurel and Hardy will get me laughing out loud; therefore, what is funnier? Put Carrey in SLIH. I doubt he could make it funnier and if he did his schtick, would he not take away from it? Need: Strong Director.

  • Oh my god! Not hard to see why he was an idol of Robin Williams. Hilarious and obviously mostly improvised. Jonathan Winters really was a genius.

  • Brings back fond memories, thanks.

  • Winters and Rickles are certifiable insane! These guys had minds going at war speed. And not a single foul word.

  • Jonathan Winters makes pictures in your mind. You can SEE that poor wee doggie going back and forth on the windscreen in the snowstorm, or Frank Sinatra holding diamond bracelets out the window for the motorcycle cops, or peering over the top of a stack of musical instruments in the back of the bus. And Mr Winters probably went out there with nothing more prepared than a rough outline; then he improvised the whole screamingly hilarious "Elwood Suggins" speech! Nobody else can do that.

  • the 5 people who clicked "dislike" need psychological help

  • If u have not seen it watch ...its a mad mad mad mad world !!! great !

  • Absolute genius.

  • Man was Dean pissed or what =D love it!

  • Jonathan's IQ must be totally off the charts. What a comic genius! This routine is incredibly funny even today. Not dated in any way.

  • I see where Robin WIlliams gets a lot of his mannerisms from!

  • Its totally unfortunate that we will probably never ever see another group of legends as we have with these great actors/comedians. How can you not love these human beings?

  • jonathan winters is the greatest he will make you laugh untill you cry

  • Jonathan Winters is one the most talented comedians of our time!

He has inspired Robin Williams, David Letterman & Jerry Seinfeld, etc...

Also watch the clip from the old Jack Paar Show called "the stick" here on youtube. And you will see one of many examples of his incredible talent!

  • I wonder how Stan laurel, W C Fields, Phil silvers, Billy connely etc would have faired on the roasts?.

  • There are just to many memorale quotes in this video. And the laughter on everyone's face is priceless. I've seen today's roasts and people are either smirking or giggling and I blame the botox for that. I love this because you see the absolute joy they're having. And Jonathan Winters you are my idol!

  • Winters is one of only a handful of funniest men alive.

  • The funniest comic ever!

  • Yes he is alive and Robin Wiliams just did an interview about him

  • Boy they don't make em like that any more

  • i BOW to the Great Jonathan Winters!

    what a GOD-gifted comediane!

  • HHHEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE! HEEEEEEEEEEEEEEE!!!!!!!!!! DAMN JOHNATHON WINTERS IS SO FKING HILARIOUS!!!!!!!! I LOVE IT!

  • Jonathan Winters in an interview . Actually said "it was all ad lib maid up on the spot". What a quick wit. It came easy to him. He would start and get the ball rolling. Some of it made no sense at all. But damn funny

  • @kevykev38 "Some of it made no sense at all. But damn funny" Thats why it was funny.

  • at 3:54 is Classic..and Winters done it several other times..would talk about NO FOOD..at a roast...lol. Flower and Popcorn was the phrase when he came as Maud Fricket...to Roast Ronald Reagan...

  • Dean Martins and Sinatras reaction when the "dog got caught in the wipers" is the best

  • By far the funniest improv comedian ever. No dirty words, no fart jokes, just pure talent.

  • is it just me or did the old school celebrities have tons more class and charisma then our generations of celebrities?

  • @zarthered today's comics, if you can call them that, are vulgar, lewd, with no class, and always obscene to the point of dispicable. The guys that came before them, had class, never swore, never had disparaging words for other people, and were respected by their peers!! We will never see that class of people again, so cherish these pioneers of funny, and honor their contribution to make us laugh..

  • @zarthered Not just you at all. We all feel it. Class and charisma are gone, sad to say.

  • Jonathan Winters has no peer. And his only heir, in my opinion, is Robin Williams. Jonathan was like the greatest of jazz musicians - a genius at improvisation. Sometimes I think that he might be very well be the funniest man who ever walked this earth.

  • Jonathon Winters You can see how Robin Williams studied him day and night. His humor is quick if you ain't paying attention it will pass you by. The fastest mind in the west!

  • omg how choice is that!!!!!!!! no comedians around like him.....

  • SOooo funny

  • This is the 2nd vid i have seen where he used the term "rolled." I'm gonna start using it now... now i just have to wait for someone to bring up mugging.

  • funniest thing i have seen in years genius

  • I watched this when it first aired. I remember my dad just about suffocating he was laughing so hard. I have always hoped I'd get to see it again, and I'm very glad I've found it here.

It not only gives me reason to laugh hard, but also a good memory of my dad.

  • I should be working...but I'm having too much fun.

  • in 2011 he's doing to the voice of papa smurf in the Smurf Movie

  • Jonathan is my favorite comedian. This is all in-prov he's not reading anything. When you can get Rickels to assume that position looking straight at him and cracking up you know you're good.

  • i picked u 4 a report

  • Jonathan winters is still among the living. I believe his wife died in '09

  • Unfortunately Mr. Winters passed away in 2009. After doing what he entitled a Mockumentary..or so I've read. Yet to locate evidence of its release, or completion for that matter. Anyone?

  • @amyray63 no he did not.

  • @amyray63 Mr, Winters is still with us. Check Dead or Alive for comfirmation

  • @amyray63 I'm sure many have reported to you he is still alive.

  • this is a very funny man and you can see he is very happy in life not many can make you happy like him long may he live a happy life

  • Pure, comedic brilliance! Wow!!!!

  • mrchange is right about the fake laughs; it was considered necessary for some unfathomable reason. The fun with Jonathan was that he could get REAL laughs from Dean and whoever he was roasting. Dino was Jonathan's biggest fan, only "straight man", and his best audience.

Hell, if the TV Guide said that Jonathan Winters was going to be on the Dean Martin show and I had a date for that night, I'd break the date.

There are lots of cute broads, but only ONE Jonathan Winters.

  • This guy made comics lose it. Best ever.

  • Seen this dozens of times and just noticed Flip Wilson's laugh at "Jonathan" at 4:55. Jonathan Winters is sitting next to him. The only thing I didn't like about the roasts was when they cut in the fake laughs.

This bit needs not fake laughs--a classic.

  • @mrchange1951 Get catch stoner friend

  • Right on, Winters was so funny. I remember him on Carson, he had me and my brother as teenagers on the ground with tears flowing.

  • I just love the reaction from all on stage.Classic.

    Nothing like a good laugh.

    The man's a genius.

    Priceless.

  • Actually I think he's still alive.

  • you're right, he is still with us ...

  • @NYsoul99

    Yes indeed!

  • @NYsoul99 He may be a little older and get around a little slower, but he is still the the true genius that made us laugh our tails off for years.

  • @NYsoul99 In fact, he'll be 86 in November. :)

  • @assgrabberb Jonathan Winters is very much alive, he's just retired now. His humour is still winning hearts and funny bones even in his retirement. The greatest comedian of the 20th century: Jonathan Winters.

  • @assgrabberb HE IS ALIVE, 85.

  • Come on people. This was one of the funnist things ever. Pure genius. Even Frank and Dean was unable to keep a straight face. Too damn bad this kink of comic genius is gone.

  • 3:50 to 4:20 LOL

  • its a wonder that winters did all of this off the top of his head

  • This single thing has to be one of the funniest things to ever be done, aired on television, performed on stage, etc.etc. How this single person, can consistantly be not just funny, but screaming funny, boggles my mind. If there is anyone that deserves to live forever, its my idol, Jonathan Winters!

  • Amen to that, Les!

  • @LesHut Something tells me some of that was pure improv too! I think that laughter from all the other guests was genuine! What an act!

  • Jonathan Winters was the original master of improv comedy. I understand most of his routines he made right off the top of his head, and was hilarious at it.

  • Another brilliant, stream-of-consciousness stand-up by the comedic genius of the age. It's no surprise that Robin Williams and Jim Carrey were obviously inspired by and are disciples of the iconic Jonathan Winters.

Also, Dean's "drunk" act was just that--an act. He never had real booze when performing.

  • @Waldocounty Geez, don't ever mention Jonathon Winters and Jim Carrey in the same statement. Jim Carreey couldn't carry Jonathon Winters' shoes!

  • @amichip I agree. I just do not see a comedic connection between Jonathan Winters and Carrey, particularly since Jim Carrey is not funny.

  • @Novak67766 I think Winters is a genius but I have to disagree about Jim Carrey. I saw him in Barrie, Ontario, when he was 17--the cover charge was two dollars--and he was working mostly as an impressionist, but for two hours he absolutely was the funniest person I'd ever seen in my life. He got three standing ovations and you knew he was going places. Some of his movies do suck but he is a genuine talent.

  • @chomsky88 I don't doubt you. You cannot fake instantaneous laughter. It's either funny or it is not. His movies are nothing but showcases of him, but that is obviously what is wanted. They have become strictly Carrey movies to the point they are just about him and everything else is a distraction around him, just as he is a distraction to any plot or story line. People obviously want to see HIM rather than a movie. Of course there is nothing wrong in that.

  • @Novak67766 I agree that there has never been a movie that showed him to best advantage but a Canadian kid working his way up the ladder, to say he is not funny is a denial of reality. He made it based on his talent and nothing else.

  • amichip, Neither could Robin Williams.

  • Exactly!

  • dean martin is probably more drunk than anyone ive ever seen in my life who still had enough balance and mobility left in their mouth to host a tv show. what a legend.

  • he never drank during his shows. it´s his act. sinatra says it at the end of the dean martin roasts: dean martin

  • Dino only drank apple juice! He would never have lived as long as he did if he drank as much as people think he did! It's a well-known fact. Check them before you make statements like this.

  • @tpki5 That's cause it's an act..his daughter says so in her book..he actually has apple juice in his glass.

  • I love watching the reaction of the other stars, especially Rickels! lol.

The current "celebrity" roasts are a JOKE and not a good one! Horrible!

Good thing we have these videos here on YouTube! :)

  • @PaintedTurtle001 Nonsense, the roasts these days are just as good for the most part, its just these days they can't get wasted on tv like they did during the dean martin roasts. I love em both

  • Comment removed

  • @PaintedTurtle001 ok bye phukface

  • @thoostorm4 same to you!

  • His comedy routines contain pathos, wild imagery, and spot on accents of people you think you know. He was -- is -- one ot the best!

  • the best!! god bless them all.

  • This is as good as it gets. Nothing better, just different.

  • always and forever, the greatest there ever was. Him and Richard, same thing

  • I growed up in Ohio about two towns over from Elwood P. Suggins. We knowed he was there and our mamas told us to don't never go into that part of the state because of it. She didn't want us to be bus drivers and such. And we didn't, neither. I'm up for parole next month.

  • whenn frum cieyy to Cieey on Consurr Toorr , is it me or does ol Deano appear over compensated with liquid refreshment here ? his eyes are bagged out royal - Man poor ol' sot.

  • Who doesn't love Elwood Suggins?
