she was in El Paso last night playing the Mendelssohn Violin Concerto in E minor, she was on fire, you should have seen her, never seen such a small person make so much sound, I even got to meet her and got a picture with her. it was badass. She is gunna be back in February, im definentally going
even this is still a part of piazzolla's tango collections, I dont think Oblivion should have a "tango" feel. Its more then a tango - a masterpiece that penetrates through minds and arouse emotions. Something that delves in deep inside. Very deep, deep piece. chee-yun's interpretation give a light, tango feel/ I dont think it should be that way...
A true violinist to me is supposed to be natural. I mean she plays amazingly but as a violinist myself i think that the true beauty is held in the violin and the music it makes.
muy bonito, pero ese fondo Pan de Azucar, mar y garotas se lleva medio de los pelos con algo que vibra desde el alma nostalgiosa del tango.Lindo intento pero...... .... .... ..
@BartManNL NO - you check out the original work with Piazzolla playing (and Paz on violin), THAT is the definitive version!
Further, this lady is a wonderful performer. Oblivion, and many other Piazzolla works have been played in about every "genre" that has existed. Just because you do not prefer or "like" this lady's treatment of Oblivion, that does not give you or anyone else an "opportunity to insult"!!
really amaizing, what a nice piece. Chee-Yun Ni hao ma! you are really very expectacular, I never had seen to play violin so beautiful.Oblivion carry me at infinite, the most beautiful song I've ever earing in my life.thousand of congratulations.the bossanova style I like so much. greetings for you Mario since Venezuela. Kind regards.,
Wow, read a few comments. I think most are results of the visual than the music. I will say there is a dumbing down of music in the Music Industry to cater to adolescent tastes. If there is a "crime" here it would be not to know what the original sounds like or the passion in the mind of the composer.
This is a really poppy version of the original without the sadness or soul. This is my opinion. Many comment this is what must be done to make the most amount of money. To those, I say Fuck You!
Art is a way to express how we feel, how we are. In this case, music is for everyone who is available to feel it, connecting us, and everyone has a way to express by self. Who are we to judge something that is personal, unique, perfect and subjective? This is not an insult to the original piece. This is art, and it's free

@MrSunnyOutside yup she must be only pretending to play the violin, because clearly all "real" music needs to be serious. /sarcasm off/ if music is in fact alive, then it can change.
@lordofmoria, Yup, she is pretending to be playing the violin, wouldn't you agree? I've read several comments & there seems to be a recurring theme.
1. This is a really CHEESY Clip.
2, The music is passable, but not great, in my opinion. She took the sadness out of the original composition & turned it into a A.M. Pop easy listening.
Had she just played and not used this cheesy video, there would be less negative responses. Music doesn't need to be serious, but should at least be respectful.
@lordofmoria, I've just watched the video responses. Time Thing is jazzy yet keeps the sadness of the original. If you are a Chee Yun fan and not familiar with Piazzolla, watch the Adios Nonino video response as I never had the pleasure of watching Piazzolla in person but have 4 lps including Oblivion. I just wished Youtube was around when Piazzolla was around so I could be aware of his greatness. I started to enjoy his music after watchin Al Di Meola play his "World Sinfonia" in the 80s.
@Rodrigo95120 don't get me wrong, I love Piazolla when it's played the way he intended...so edgy, and it perfectly captures the spirit of Argentina. I am also not a Chee Yun fan (this is the first time I've heard her I think).
Yep, this clip is cheesy, but who said music videos can't be cheesy? As for what she does, I think it's actually rather cool that Piazolla's music can be played in a completely different style.
I guess what I mean is, I'd love to hear this in a bar on a Saturday night.
@lordofmoria, Cool! Videos can be cheesy and you almost have to be a fan of the Artist doing the Cheese than trying to bring on new fans, in my opinion. I have to admit that it was easier to listen to the music while I was typing than watching the actual clip. It's still too Poppy for my taste, but as someone said, That's why they have Chocolate & Vanilla ice cream,
@Rodrigo95120 Now, if I had just bought a $100 ticket to see her at Carnegie Hall and she pulled this one out, I'd walk out and probably boo. Luckily, this is youtube, not Alice Tully...and thank God we can hear less-than-respectful, serious music on youtube!
@welsj I am glad that you like them, and am very jealous that you have an accordion playing grandfather. Piazzolla himself played a bandoneon, and as you can imagine it's very difficult to find any bandoneon player here in the United States. I am trying to get a group together to play Piazzolla's "Adios Nonino", but without the bandoneon it just sounds souless and empty.
I always like to think of music as in the ear of the beholder. Its whatever you want to make it. There is definitely no set in stone way of playing anything, it just has to be pleasing to the ear of the listener. To Mr. 18 thumbs up I believe this is a very great interpretation of the piece.
@welsj hehe, glad you asked. try typing in "Oblivion Piazzolla Triode" in search and clicking on the one with three asians playing cello, violin, and piano. It sounds superficially plain compared to this but it grasps piazzolla's intentions far better and with no pretense or cheesy video. Of course, I also like Piazzolla's version itself (type Oblivion RNE), and I also like Julian Lloyd Weber's version. Even though it doesn't follow piazzolla's version closely it plays with sincerity.
@welsj thanks for agreeing with me, it's a pretty big deal these days for one youtube commentator to not spout shit at another commentator within the third comment, let alone reach any consensus.
@welsj I do not think there is anything wrong with an interpretation in the purest sense of the word, but a clear message was sent with the original oblivion. Don't you think it's demeaning to warp that message? The Schindler's List main theme was written to be a piece of extraordinary sadness and tragedy, how would you feel if it were turned into a piece of pop music or jazz? Conversely, do you think it'd be a good thing to "interpret" Glen Miller's "In the Mood" to reflect goth music?
@brainwasher9876 As to offense being taken because of a disliked rendering of an original; unless it represents a legal infringement, there's little that can be done. So why concern yourself with it? Enjoy what you like, and ignore or avoid the (bad) tastes of others.
Chee Yun is fine fiddler of international class status, but her excellent skills can not realistically be called the "world's best" (Can any?).I also remind critics that many great violinists have performed arrangements of POPular music, including Perlman, and even Heifetz..Miss Yun is a young, attractive, and talented player who is marketing herself in a way which promotes her talents and femininity successfully in a very competitive niche.A little well-done,cross-over,will not hurt her reputation.
@SiegfriedHorner, Show me clips of Perlman, Heifetz or any great musician mugging to a camera while pretending to play. There are many who've taken great compositions like Miles Davis did with Sketches of Spain on Rodrigo's & DeFalla music & created beautiful music honoring the originals.
Chee Yun used Astor's composition and relegated it as afterthought background music as it had little importance. It was more important to TITILLATE the viewer & sorry but feed the ego of this supposed artist.
@MrHenigans If you're going to add its use as "background music" as part of your attack on Ms. Yun, then you ,in effect, are attacking countless films (including most of the work of genius Kubrick), Art exhibits, coffee houses, etc., etc.,. which have used the music of great masters (I won't include Astor, as a matter of personal taste.), as backgound or mood setting effect to a primary purpose."Mugging"?Have you seen much of the great "Lenny" Bernstein's podium displays? As for Miles.....
@MrHenigans As for Miles's "honoring; isn't its "quality" also a matter of opinion and taste? As a practical matter, didn't Miles distort and modify the creative work of another artist for his own profit? I don't especially enjoy the video in question, or the music of Piazzolla, but Ms. Yun is doing what countless performers in many of the arts have done....attempting to profit off the labors and creative ideas of others (I don't say that disparagingly). De gustibus non est disputandum.
@SiegfriedHorner, You protect Chee-Yun as though you are a Justen Beiber fan. Obviously you have not heard Miles Sketches of Spain. The analogy you propose is really weak. How you can watch this clip and not say it's only about Chee Yun & the music is relegated as backgound & any music could have been used as it was not important. Films use music to create a mood & done masterly by Kubrick, Scorsese & others. Show me a clip of Bernstein mugging to a camera & pretending to play an instrument.
@MrHenigans I don't know Ms. Yun, and have never seen her perform. And,I don't know who Mr. Beiber is. But I am old enough to have heard live broadcasts of Miles, and have a first LP issue of "Sketches Of Spain". Apparently, you refuse to accept that tastes differ, and you assume that yours are superior to the discounting of those who demur. As the Roman said, there's no disputing taste.Miles and Ms. Yun "are",ultimately, entertainers for profit. As "art",their merits are a matter of taste, and opinion.
@SiegfriedHorner, I have no problem with artists profiting from making music as all do. Some like Miles, Chick Corea, Al Di Meola, Paco De Lucia, etc. do so but never compromise their art for money. If they did, they would have acquired far more wealth than creating art for art's sake. Joni Mitchell quit creating music as her record companies insisted she make it formulaic & she refused.
As for Chee Yun, I am overly sensitive due to my love & respect of composer AstorPiazzolla's music.
@MrHenigans Understood. But it's important to understand that Chee-Yun is doing what most of us are doing; trying to survive.even thrive,in a very competitive world. After all,she did choose Piazzolla's music.I am truly indifferent to the performance in this video, since it is music which, though not offensive, doesn't appeal to MY ears.I won't even judge the motives of the other musicians you cited; i.e., whether or not they have compromised their art.Though others judge, only they would know.
@MrHenigans We could expand this discussion into one about the inherent meaning of music, and whether it (music), free of a pre-established program, can represent anything other than itself. Before you jump to say, "of course it can", think about it. It's a classic question of musical aesthetics, which has been long-argued.Many of the greatest masters have said no. But others.....
@SiegfriedHorner, I should not have compared Chee Yun to Mile Davis, Astor Piazzolla, Chick Corea and the others who create new & distinct music. I see you point. Chee Yun is a performer only. She performs to make money. She will perform the music that will produce the greatest amount possible and will create videos like this to advertise.
Luckily there are other musicians & composers that will create the best possible music they can, but in turn not be compensated as well.
@MrHenigans No need to respond if you're "done".But:a little research will show you that Chee-Yun performs and has recorded with some of the world's greatest orchestras and instrumentalists, regularly performing time-tested masterpieces. She has received much praise in reviews. My metier is in the "classical" field, but I have known many fine jazz musicians who have ALL regularly played for money, since most musicians of any kind are not wealthy. Her choices do not please you.Fine, but so what !
@SiegfriedHorner, The point? Chee-Yun takes the heart, sorrow, soul & warmth out of the original composition & turns it in to Ramada Inn lounge music to use as background music for a Cheesy Video for cash. Fine, We have different opinions on what makes great music
Musicians that I mention are also Great Composers who create great original music. Don't know if Chee Yun composes. I can tell you after watching this cheesy video, I could not bare to research further on this light weight "artist".
@MrHenigans You clearly don't comprehend English.I've NEVER stated that this video contained any "great music"..in any form, original or otherwise. And do you understand the fundamental issue? That "different opinions" (and tastes) exist.Apparently, you deem your tastes to be superior to those whose musical sensitivities differ.Btw,tell us about your critical successes as a musician. It's particularly amusing that you state for all that "Musicians that I mention are also Great Composers". REALLY?
@SiegfriedHorner, Yes, I consider Astor Piazzolla & Miles Davis & Chick Corea & others great composers. Those that create new, exciting & ORIGINAL compositions deserve respect in all music genres. I also respect Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley , Hank Williams & any composer who creates ORIGINAL music.
You find those composers amusing to be classified as "Great, REALLY". We would not have had this debate had Chee not taken the soul, warmth out of Oblivion & wrote her own music for her cheesy clip.
@SiegfriedHorner, Wow, you don't think Miles Davis, Chick Corea & Astor Piazzolla are great composers? You are amused that they would be classified as great? I don't know if that explains why you are defending Chee Yun so much. You wrote about peoples tastes and some prefer Pop, Classical, Jazz, Rock, etc. and what rocks someone's boat is personal. I cannot take Michael Bolton but love James Brown.
It;s hard for me to think anyone thinks Miles, Piazzolla & Corea are not great composers.
@MrHenigans Of course(!), the video is about Chee-Yun.Do you also reason that because my Bernstein LPs and CDs have "Lenny"s" picture on their covers, they are about LB and not the music, or for that matter, Miles' covers? (If so, I would actually think that you'd be correct to a large extent. But he (LB) too was an entertainer, and he acknowledged as much). It would also be presumptuous to think that my many Bernstein recordings indicate a preference for his music-making (Composing? Yes).
The critics here, trivial as they may be, provide some amusement, but not so much as to detract from Miss Yun's fine playing. The ad hominem insults against her person are too undignified to address directly, and actually reflect more the debased character displayed by the attackers. So, she interprets to your dissatisfaction. That is subjective, as is the RELATIVE greatness and merits Piazzolla's music. It's pleasant and you like it ; Fine, but time will test it true merits.
@brainwasher9876, What are you talking about? She is not playing the violin, she is pretending to play the violin. The difference between those that like this and those that do not, is explained by MrHoolits below:
Those that like also like Yanni, Kenny G., John Tesh, Madonna & Britney Spears.
Those that don't like, prefer Astor Piazzolla, Chick Corea, Miles Davis and others who enjoy new & innovative music.
My apologies to MrHoolits for using his posting, but I feel the same as he.
@Bret6464, Never said I could. If I could I wouldn't take the sorrow or soul of a perfect composition and turn it into elevator music or something playing in the Ramada Inn Lounge.
Look if she wants to make a video mugging for the camera, pretending to play, fine. But have the respect to do so with her own composition. Don't dumb down a great composition like Oblivion to cater to the tastes of adolescents. Great music does not need to be dumb down.
@MrSunnyOutside She "pretends", since it's not a live performance, but a video made for commercial purposes. Her live performances are passionate and she is involved there. Besides, this is a new approach to the classical piece - a jazzy version - hence the endless sadness... the sorrow of one's soul takes a slightly different form of expression here /and not so dramatic/. I believe, genial works allow various interpretations, which proves their infinite potential and immortality. Greetings.
@mradkova, Maybe she can dumb down Beethoven's 9 Sympathy. You are a Chee Yun fan and for you she can do wrong. I understand that. I happen to respect the great Astor Piazzolla.
Yes, it is made for commercial purposes so the motivation was to make as much as cash as possible, fuck the composer's original masterpiece and intent. As they money doesn't talk, it screams!
If you watch the clip the music doesn't matter as it was never about the music, it's about SELLING!
@MrSunnyOutside Well, have always thought, YT disputes are senseless! Was tempted somehow to be involved into this one and I really regret it. ... Am NOT "fan" of anyone... Also DETEST the modern times' superficial demands, when all is about fame and selling!!! My point was rater different - I may judge a rendition, only when listening to a LIVE performance, not a video clip, so when she does play, she puts her heart into it /am talking about a real playing, not posing for the camera/ Regards.
Watch the video response Al Di Meola, you may not like it as there was a derogatory remark about Lady GAGA. Listen to the Original also on video responses.
If you search just Piazzolla you will wonderful interpretations like YoYo Ma & beautiful solo guitar renditions, etc., some know & some great unknowns.
This is my only exposure to Chee with the exception she was on Curb Your Enthusiasm.
Not sure why anyone who is "good" would sell themselves in this fashion.
@casyatbat Thanks! I adore Piazzolla's version - who doesn't!... Love Yo Yo Ma's rendition as well. Al Di Meola had a concert last year in Bulgaria and I've listened to his "Oblivion" here on YT. Know these are crazy times we are living in... money-oriented times of artistic devaluation, alas. And still... don't want to make any extreme statements or discard artists and always try to find the good thing in each innovative version. Greetings.
@MrSunnyOutside This is Oblivion. A hundred different versions of Oblivion, in different music-genres, have been recorded and performed, AND many people like those versions that do not strictly follow Piazzolla's performance. My point is trolls do exist and make insulting comments on YT, your comment and your friends comments are pure-insults. Civilized people do NOT insult, particularly since this artist is a great performer. A tiny bit of civility goes a long way!
@Bret6464 "A tiny bit of civility goes a long way!"
Read every single post you sent me. Perhaps you should follow your own advice, and stop being a blatant hypocrite in every shape and definition of the word.
the way this woman played it totally killed the original meaning of the piece. Piazzolla meant for it to be solemn, tragic, and shocking--not coffee table, basso nova music. The violin playing was too whimsical and the percussion in the background was both unecessary and insulting to this piece and its creator.
@brainwasher9876 To call this interpretation insulting is maybe a little too critical. If it were composed to be played like Piazzolla's it would be pointless imitation. I prefer Piazzolla's but it isn't for all times because it requires a different state of mind for the listener and a deeper level of emotional commitment. Not all moments in your life will reflect this mood. If it is not for you that is okay. Surely she didn't mean to insult, though.
@mattsp77 the last thing I want to do right now is to start some kind of flame war, but I just want to point out that remaining faithful to an author's original intent does not necessarily mean pointless imitation. If that were true Jascha Heifetz would be considered a hack artist and not one of the greatest violinists of all time.
Well, I don't think she cared one way or the other.
When you use a great composition like Astor's Oblivion and turn it in to elevator music then have the audacity to use that music as background music for an egotistic shallow fluff video where the focus is strictly on Chee-Yun & not the music, it is insulting.
So many great Artists & amateurs have honored Piazzolla by focusing on their interpretation of the music not themselves.
@casyatbat No. I wrote that she DIDN'T mean to insult Piazzolla's composition. Yes, Piazzolla's is better. So what? A company wanted to pay her to use her beauty and musical skills in an advertisement. So what? Earning a living doesn't make her the egotist that many on this thread are so absolutely certain that she is; certain and faultless enough to be able to pass judgment. My post was a polite way of saying that I think being hyper-critical of anyone is usually a bad practice.
@mattsp77 Well if you want to whore yourself out to be the next Madonna or Britney Spears, I have no problem with that. Make all the money you wish with but at least have the dignity to do it with your own music.
If she has no control over her image and allow this to happen or she's loves how she is portrayed either way it's disgusting.
Great & real artists don't need to sink to the lowest denominator. Just watch all other Piazzolla clippings & you will see what I am talking about.
@casyatbat A whore now! You have post on this thread from 2 to 7 months ago. You come back unsolicited by comment and yet you hate the video. You may think that Chee-Yun's composition is insulting and horrible but why is it that you keep coming back to try and diminish the enjoyment that anybody else may derive? I never made an inflammatory comment but merely suggested that perhaps we would all be better served by less malicious criticism. I listened once and moved on. It's easy, try it.
@mattsp77, Try this. You are a Chee-Yun fan and she is a great composer and writes beautiful music and then some some wanabe Britney Spear or Madonna takes your very hard work and turns it into Lounge - Elevator music then prances around pretending to play an instrument while mugging to a camera.
If her great compositions were reduced to background music for another's ego or just to make some cash rather than the beauty of the composition, you might find it insulting.
@EnoughAlready969 Not really. I didn't even know she did an Oblivion composition until I saw the link from the Rastrelli Quartett's performance. I guess I'm not easily offended.
Troll haters like you who make such rude and insulting comments to great artists on YT need to shut up! Suggest you go to school and learn how NOT act the neanderthal! Take your friend Mr. Sunny Outside with you, get civilized!!!
@Bret6464 I fucking love comments like this. People calling someone else a troll and then STATING NO FACTS ABOUT THE VIDEO WHATSOEVER TO BACK UP THEIR CLAIMS are the purest example of a fucking hypocrite on youtube. I've been shoveling shit all my life and I get to dump it on worthless fucks like you.
@brainwasher9876 Why are all these cynical comments, guys?! Excuse my intrusion, but do we need to offend each other... Certain things are considered as "pearls" by some and "sh..." by others, but one must respect /if not accept/ the different viewpoint. There are many mediocre performers in YT that hardly get any negative comments /mostly praises???/ and then violinist like Chee-Yun is blamed for being fake... Well, here is her own reading of that Music, which only affirms its eternal value.
@mradkova i was only hostile to that fucker because i don't appreciate being called a troll by nonsensical idiots. I'd gladly hold polite conversation with a rational person.
@brainwasher9876 And he was defending her art and his own aesthetic principles, I guess. It's a vicious circle - all these votes up & down, which inevitably include offensive names and hits below the belt. I've just written under another comment, it's a new, jazzy approach to that everlasting piece. The arrangement is certainly non-traditional, but the deep sadness, the tragedy are still there and yes... not expressed in a highly dramatic way, but doesn't Music speak for itself?... Regards.
@mradkova calling someone else a troll while spouting nothing but ethos without any logic or evidence to back one's claim-is blatant hypocrisy. Hence no forgiveness.
I have no problem with interpretations; in fact, I welcome new energy. However, I dispute your claim that the sadness is still there, mostly because of the offensive inclusion of this bass nova. A piece's original message should not be changed. Imagine Schindler's List played to a christmas jingle, or the Bach Chaconne whiimsical.
@brainwasher9876 I've got you point and do not justify any insulting comments either... But this happens when the temperamental emotions are involved, rather than "pure reasoning" and we all are imperfect humans, following blindly our impulses sometimes. My point was different - any innovation, as far as it's NOT disrespectful or cynical /don't think this one is/ should be welcome. On the other hand, if a piece is powerful, any additional emphasizing on it could be too much of an exaggeration.
I mean the inner balance is so very important! But you've said, according to you the original message is changed i.e lost here, which I did not feel that way... Well, this is your personal opinion and I have to honor it the way it is no matter if I share the same view point or not....
@Bret6464 before you give me any proof that I am incorrect my statement, you have no right to troll me or call me a troll. So fuck you and go make me a sandwich.
@Bret6464 you've absolutely missed the entire point of my argument. What is YOUR reasoning that she ISN'T whimsical, that the basso nova ISN'T detracting from the original intent of piazzolla? Stop using stupid, petty insults in a weak attempt to distract from your own childish antics.
Skip the lady pretending to be playing violin and watch the video responses. Wow, I was blown away by the Great Astor Piazzolla and Tine Thing Helseth did a wonderful tasteful version of Oblivion and she is really playing, not pretending.
I came upon this unknown violinist by accident. In the news there was a mention of a Stradivarius violin stolen in a UK airport by a S.Korean violinist Kym on her snack break. So I was curious and tried to find her on YouTube but couldn't find her, instead, I landed upon this violinist Chee-Yun and very much like her arrangement of Piazolla's song.
For all the haters out there, she is actually a pretty good violinist. Secondly, who cares about the video, but if you know anything about tango it is about passion, sensuality, and well she's pretty hot. Just because she isn't primarily a Jazz violinist doesn't mean she is not allowed to play Jazz. Just because Steve Vai is a classically trained Guitar play he is only allowed to play classical guitar? I mean come on. (and please noobs this is just an example) This is her rendition of the piece.
@Rikatross If you don't like it then just don't listen to it anymore. I just letting you know you can dance a Tango very well to this rendition. and if you guys really go hating on every other rendition of his pieces you seriously have just wasted hours of your life and I don't know learn to play it all and perform it and post on youtube or something. be a little more productive. Do something besides Bickering on youtube.
@MrHoolits Ok, first of all if you read my comment, I said I was not comparing her to Steve Vai, Secondly I am a big fan of Piazzolla works. I dance, listen, and play his music. If you ever read his bio then you would know that he liked this style, mixing Jazz with Tango. and seriously her love for herself. Come on, it's a freaking advertisement. This is probably the only thing you have seen or heard from her. I never said that she is the best, but she's good.
@Rikatross, Astor played with great jazz musicians like Gerry Mulligan and Gary Burton.
Musicians like Al Di Meola, Tine Thing Helseth and others well known and not
so well known treat his compositions with heart, feeling, warmth and soul.
Chee-Yun treated it like commercial background elevator music, an after thought.
She should have used Rod Stewart's "Do you think I'm sexy". It's more appropriate! She gives Pantene shampoo commercial more respect than she gave to Astors composition.
@MrHoolits Ha; please don't try to color this fine piece of work with your bias. I think the video is fascinating, and was enjoying it until reading your comment, which now nags me as I view it ("this video is about the deep love Chee Yun has for herself"). Your comment is more a reflection of you (ignorance, immaturity, cynicism) than anything about the video (sounds rather similar to your critique). Critics love to suck away others' enjoyment.
@MrHoolits Oh is that so? What else do you know? I bet with your psychic powers and supreme knowledge of every person's musical taste, you could be the new Miss Cleo!!!
She is truly and madly in love with her self. Wow!!! For those of you who enjoy this "performance" to a search on "Chee-Yun Pantene TV Ad". I like Pantene shampoo and conditioner and will continue to use those products despite this "performance". Well, anything for a buck! I do agree with casyatbat that Merf and the Magic Tones do better lounge music.
tojour, Good suggestion on the Holiday Inn. Please ask the soulless, passionless violin egotist pretend to be playing "violinist" Chee_Yun to stay with Madonna and Britney Spears. Based on this video, she has more in common with them that a great composer like Piazzolla. There are many great recommendations of others on their ego less interpretation of the great Astor. Do your self a favor and search YouTube for Astor Piazzolla performing Oblivion and see why many find this insulting.
I've been listening to this fabulous composition the past 48 hours and I can't get over how simplistic yet beautiful it is. Okay, I'm going to have to transcribe it. Thanks for posting this!
@gregoryusa1 no. Piazzolla's work is complex... it may seem simple since one of his innate talents lies in the melodic nuances of his tangos.... this is a very elegant and deeply sentimental composition, with interesting shifts and variations, in timings and intensity... but also agree with you that if the ear perceives it as simplistic, so be it.. it was meant I am sure to be savored and and to delight ther listener above all else.
I prefer Quando, Quando, Quando by Murph & the Murph Makers over Chee-Yun's version of the Ramada Inn lounge music destruction of Piazzolla's composition. At least Murph isn't an egomaniac!
katydid41, Had she used her own music or Madonna/Britney Spears it wouldn't bother me as I would never see it. As a fan of Piazzolla it bothers me that she shamelessly takes this great composition and turns it into a shallow ego driven fluff piece of Ramada Lounge music. Any music could have been used as it is not about the music, it's all about her, a terrible way to treat the Great Composer Piazzolla. Look at Tine Thing Helseth & tango trio – Oblivion and feel the warmth the soul of Piazzolla
I speak/read only English but studied Latin in High School. So. I'm guessing Italian, and I will take a shot at what you said: "sweet interpretation" very elegant really" am I correct? If so I totally agree with you. You said it in a very beautiful language. Thanks. :)
Wow, Hair, Makeup, Wind Machine, Photographer! Nothing shows how great a musician is then playing with a with a wind machine while being photographed. Nnever heard of Chee-Yun and am totally turned off by this and never care to know after this MTV Ego shallow fest video. Like MTV it's all about the person not the music. Terrible way to treat Piazzolla composition.
How did she allow this to be shown to the public? This belongs in MTV where she will be at home with all the other lip sync artists
@casyabat, think of it as a music video in an odd sense, like for a cover of a song. So what if she did it simular to her pantene commercial. Dude, just shut up. If you'd listen to other pieces she plays, you'd know that she is freaking AMAZING.
@araz4561 The video credits Chee-Yun, studio and photographer. Does NOT credit Piazzolla. How shallow and egotistic. It's all about her and only her, not the music. I find it repulsive on how she used the great composer, musician and true artist Astor Piazzolla in this fluff piece. Had this been a performance piece like the others, I would not have commented. She doesn't even credit Piazzolla but does credit the photographer, what a sad joke. She is truly and totally in love with her self
@casyatbat Hey! get over yourself... Chee-Yun didn't post this video. Your ire is mis-directed about the credit issues.
I am frustrated on another issue, that the producer of the video used the "sexy" ploy with her cuz she is really an amazing musician. I too would have enjoyed it more if they had just let her stand on stage and play the violin. Unfortunately, gorgeous female musicians are USED this way all over the world eg Vanessa Mae, to please men.
@katydid41@casyatbat I agree with you somewhat. Aside from the ridiculously commercial image this video gives off, the stupid background basso music takes all emotional seriousness and sadness out of the piece.
However, I feel that this version is one of the lesser ones posted on youtube. Although Chee-Yun did some interesting embellishments to the original piazzolla piece, the piece has almost no emotion whatsoever. I mainly blame the atrocious background music, but she didn't help either.
Look at me, I'm beautiful I'm getting my make up and hair done, I'm beautiful, Watch while I Violin Sync to background music by some guy named Piazzolla I need to push product. World's best Violinist?, Give me a break. She is John Tesh/Bernise type of good. Give the great composer and musician Piazzolla the respect he deserves and don't turn his great compositions into background Violin Sync music! Look at others performing in You Tube playing Piazzolla's music and not afraid to play live!
@casyatbat dude this is her playing the pice..it's just they were showing the photo shoot process...she used piazzolla's Oblivion from her recording to play the violin so that the photographers could get some shot ofher playing the violin....dumbo..
Awesome ^^

even this is still a part of piazzolla's tango collections, I dont think Oblivion should have a "tango" feel. Its more then a tango - a masterpiece that penetrates through minds and arouse emotions. Something that delves in deep inside. Very deep, deep piece. chee-yun's interpretation give a light, tango feel/ I dont think it should be that way...

@BartManNL NO - you check out the original work with Piazzolla playing (and Paz on violin), THAT is the definitive version!

/sarcasm off/ if music is in fact alive, then it can change.
lordofmoria 1 year ago
@lordofmoria, Yup, she is pretending to be playing the violin, wouldn't you agree? I've read several comments & there seems to be a recurring theme.
1. This is a really CHEESY Clip.
2, The music is passable, but not great, in my opinion. She took the sadness out of the original composition & turned it into a A.M. Pop easy listening.
Had she just played and not used this cheesy video, there would be less negative responses. Music doesn't need to be serious, but should at least be respectful.
Rodrigo95120 1 year ago
@lordofmoria, I've just watched the video responses. Time Thing is jazzy yet keeps the sadness of the original. If you are a Chee Yun fan and not familiar with Piazzolla, watch the Adios Nonino video response as I never had the pleasure of watching Piazzolla in person but have 4 lps including Oblivion. I just wished Youtube was around when Piazzolla was around so I could be aware of his greatness. I started to enjoy his music after watchin Al Di Meola play his "World Sinfonia" in the 80s.
Rodrigo95120 1 year ago
@Rodrigo95120 don't get me wrong, I love Piazolla when it's played the way he intended...so edgy, and it perfectly captures the spirit of Argentina. I am also not a Chee Yun fan (this is the first time I've heard her I think).
Yep, this clip is cheesy, but who said music videos can't be cheesy? As for what she does, I think it's actually rather cool that Piazolla's music can be played in a completely different style.
I guess what I mean is, I'd love to hear this in a bar on a Saturday night.
lordofmoria 1 year ago
@lordofmoria, Cool! Videos can be cheesy and you almost have to be a fan of the Artist doing the Cheese than trying to bring on new fans, in my opinion. I have to admit that it was easier to listen to the music while I was typing than watching the actual clip. It's still too Poppy for my taste, but as someone said, That's why they have Chocolate & Vanilla ice cream,

@welsj I am glad that you like them, and am very jealous that you have an accordion playing grandfather. Piazzolla himself played a bandoneon, and as you can imagine it's very difficult to find any bandoneon player here in the United States. I am trying to get a group together to play Piazzolla's "Adios Nonino", but without the bandoneon it just sounds souless and empty.
brainwasher9876 1 year ago

Even though it doesn't follow piazzolla's version closely it plays with sincerity.
brainwasher9876 1 year ago
@welsj thanks for agreeing with me, it's a pretty big deal these days for one youtube commentator to not spout shit at another commentator within the third comment, let alone reach any consensus.
brainwasher9876 1 year ago
@welsj I do not think there is anything wrong with an interpretation in the purest sense of the word, but a clear message was sent with the original oblivion. Don't you think it's demeaning to warp that message? The Schindler's List main theme was written to be a piece of extraordinary sadness and tragedy, how would you feel if it were turned into a piece of pop music or jazz? Conversely, do you think it'd be a good thing to "interpret" Glen Miller's "In the Mood" to reflect goth music?
brainwasher9876 1 year ago
@brainwasher9876 As to offense being taken because of a disliked rendering of an original; unless it represents a legal infringement, there's little that can be done. So why concern yourself with it? Enjoy what you like, and ignore or avoid the (bad) tastes of others.
SiegfriedHorner 1 year ago
Chee Yun is fine fiddler of international class status, but her excellent skills can not realistically be called the "world's best" (Can any?).I also remind critics that many great violinists have performed arrangements of POPular music, including Perlman, and even Heifetz..Miss Yun is a young, attractive, and talented player who is marketing herself in a way which promotes her talents and femininity successfully in a very competitive niche.A little well-done,cross-over,will not hurt her reputation.
SiegfriedHorner 1 year ago
@SiegfriedHorner, Show me clips of Perlman, Heifetz or any great musician mugging to a camera while pretending to play. There are many who've taken great compositions like Miles Davis did with Sketches of Spain on Rodrigo's & DeFalla music & created beautiful music honoring the originals.
Chee Yun used Astor's composition and relegated it as afterthought background music as it had little importance. It was more important to TITILLATE the viewer & sorry but feed the ego of this supposed artist.
MrHenigans 1 year ago
@MrHenigans If you're going to add its use as "background music" as part of your attack on Ms. Yun, then you ,in effect, are attacking countless films (including most of the work of genius Kubrick), Art exhibits, coffee houses, etc., etc.,. which have used the music of great masters (I won't include Astor, as a matter of personal taste.), as backgound or mood setting effect to a primary purpose."Mugging"?Have you seen much of the great "Lenny" Bernstein's podium displays? As for Miles.....
SiegfriedHorner 1 year ago
@MrHenigans As for Miles's "honoring; isn't its "quality" also a matter of opinion and taste? As a practical matter, didn't Miles distort and modify the creative work of another artist for his own profit? I don't especially enjoy the video in question, or the music of Piazzolla, but Ms. Yun is doing what countless performers in many of the arts have done....attempting to profit off the labors and creative ideas of others (I don't say that disparagingly). De gustibus non est disputandum.
SiegfriedHorner 1 year ago
@SiegfriedHorner, You protect Chee-Yun as though you are a Justen Beiber fan. Obviously you have not heard Miles Sketches of Spain. The analogy you propose is really weak. How you can watch this clip and not say it's only about Chee Yun & the music is relegated as backgound & any music could have been used as it was not important. Films use music to create a mood & done masterly by Kubrick, Scorsese & others. Show me a clip of Bernstein mugging to a camera & pretending to play an instrument.
MrHenigans 1 year ago
@MrHenigans I don't know Ms. Yun, and have never seen her perform. And,I don't know who Mr. Beiber is. But I am old enough to have heard live broadcasts of Miles, and have a first LP issue of "Sketches Of Spain". Apparently, you refuse to accept that tastes differ, and you assume that yours are superior to the discounting of those who demur. As the Roman said, there's no disputing taste.Miles and Ms. Yun "are",ultimately, entertainers for profit. As "art",their merits are a matter of taste, and opinion.
SiegfriedHorner 1 year ago
@SiegfriedHorner, I have no problem with artists profiting from making music as all do. Some like Miles, Chick Corea, Al Di Meola, Paco De Lucia, etc. do so but never compromise their art for money. If they did, they would have acquired far more wealth than creating art for art's sake. Joni Mitchell quit creating music as her record companies insisted she make it formulaic & she refused.
As for Chee Yun, I am overly sensitive due to my love & respect of composer AstorPiazzolla's music.
Ciao
MrHenigans 1 year ago
@MrHenigans Understood. But it's important to understand that Chee-Yun is doing what most of us are doing; trying to survive.even thrive,in a very competitive world. After all,she did choose Piazzolla's music.I am truly indifferent to the performance in this video, since it is music which, though not offensive, doesn't appeal to MY ears.I won't even judge the motives of the other musicians you cited; i.e., whether or not they have compromised their art.Though others judge, only they would know.
SiegfriedHorner 1 year ago
@MrHenigans We could expand this discussion into one about the inherent meaning of music, and whether it (music), free of a pre-established program, can represent anything other than itself. Before you jump to say, "of course it can", think about it. It's a classic question of musical aesthetics, which has been long-argued.Many of the greatest masters have said no. But others.....
SiegfriedHorner 1 year ago
@SiegfriedHorner, I should not have compared Chee Yun to Mile Davis, Astor Piazzolla, Chick Corea and the others who create new & distinct music. I see you point. Chee Yun is a performer only. She performs to make money. She will perform the music that will produce the greatest amount possible and will create videos like this to advertise.
Luckily there are other musicians & composers that will create the best possible music they can, but in turn not be compensated as well.
I'm done.
MrHenigans 1 year ago
@MrHenigans No need to respond if you're "done".But:a little research will show you that Chee-Yun performs and has recorded with some of the world's greatest orchestras and instrumentalists, regularly performing time-tested masterpieces. She has received much praise in reviews. My metier is in the "classical" field, but I have known many fine jazz musicians who have ALL regularly played for money, since most musicians of any kind are not wealthy. Her choices do not please you.Fine, but so what !
SiegfriedHorner 1 year ago
@SiegfriedHorner, The point? Chee-Yun takes the heart, sorrow, soul & warmth out of the original composition & turns it in to Ramada Inn lounge music to use as background music for a Cheesy Video for cash. Fine, We have different opinions on what makes great music
Musicians that I mention are also Great Composers who create great original music. Don't know if Chee Yun composes. I can tell you after watching this cheesy video, I could not bare to research further on this light weight "artist".
MrHenigans 1 year ago 2
@MrHenigans You clearly don't comprehend English.I've NEVER stated that this video contained any "great music"..in any form, original or otherwise. And do you understand the fundamental issue? That "different opinions" (and tastes) exist.Apparently, you deem your tastes to be superior to those whose musical sensitivities differ.Btw,tell us about your critical successes as a musician. It's particularly amusing that you state for all that "Musicians that I mention are also Great Composers". REALLY?
SiegfriedHorner 1 year ago
@SiegfriedHorner, Yes, I consider Astor Piazzolla & Miles Davis & Chick Corea & others great composers. Those that create new, exciting & ORIGINAL compositions deserve respect in all music genres. I also respect Bill Monroe, Ralph Stanley , Hank Williams & any composer who creates ORIGINAL music.
You find those composers amusing to be classified as "Great, REALLY". We would not have had this debate had Chee not taken the soul, warmth out of Oblivion & wrote her own music for her cheesy clip.
MrHenigans 1 year ago
@SiegfriedHorner, Wow, you don't think Miles Davis, Chick Corea & Astor Piazzolla are great composers? You are amused that they would be classified as great? I don't know if that explains why you are defending Chee Yun so much. You wrote about peoples tastes and some prefer Pop, Classical, Jazz, Rock, etc. and what rocks someone's boat is personal. I cannot take Michael Bolton but love James Brown.
It;s hard for me to think anyone thinks Miles, Piazzolla & Corea are not great composers.
Rodrigo95120 1 year ago
@MrHenigans Of course(!), the video is about Chee-Yun.Do you also reason that because my Bernstein LPs and CDs have "Lenny"s" picture on their covers, they are about LB and not the music, or for that matter, Miles' covers? (If so, I would actually think that you'd be correct to a large extent. But he (LB) too was an entertainer, and he acknowledged as much). It would also be presumptuous to think that my many Bernstein recordings indicate a preference for his music-making (Composing? Yes).
SiegfriedHorner 1 year ago
@SiegfriedHorner, You can hear Miles Sketches of Spain on You Tube.
Search
Miles Davis - Concierto de Aranjuez (Joaquín Rodrigo)
MILES DAVIS -"Will O' The Wisp" ( (Manuel de Falla)
And if you have any knowledge of Miles mugging to cameras pretending to play, please let me know
MrHenigans 1 year ago
The critics here, trivial as they may be, provide some amusement, but not so much as to detract from Miss Yun's fine playing. The ad hominem insults against her person are too undignified to address directly, and actually reflect more the debased character displayed by the attackers. So, she interprets to your dissatisfaction. That is subjective, as is the RELATIVE greatness and merits Piazzolla's music. It's pleasant and you like it ; Fine, but time will test it true merits.

Bret6464 11 months ago
@Bret6464, Never said I could. If I could I wouldn't take the sorrow or soul of a perfect composition and turn it into elevator music or something playing in the Ramada Inn Lounge.
Look if she wants to make a video mugging for the camera, pretending to play, fine. But have the respect to do so with her own composition. Don't dumb down a great composition like Oblivion to cater to the tastes of adolescents. Great music does not need to be dumb down.
MrSunnyOutside 11 months ago
@MrSunnyOutside She "pretends", since it's not a live performance, but a video made for commercial purposes. Her live performances are passionate and she is involved there. Besides, this is a new approach to the classical piece - a jazzy version - hence the endless sadness... the sorrow of one's soul takes a slightly different form of expression here /and not so dramatic/. I believe, genial works allow various interpretations, which proves their infinite potential and immortality. Greetings.
mradkova 11 months ago
@mradkova, Maybe she can dumb down Beethoven's 9 Sympathy. You are a Chee Yun fan and for you she can do wrong. I understand that. I happen to respect the great Astor Piazzolla.
Yes, it is made for commercial purposes so the motivation was to make as much as cash as possible, fuck the composer's original masterpiece and intent. As they money doesn't talk, it screams!
If you watch the clip the music doesn't matter as it was never about the music, it's about SELLING!
MrSunnyOutside 11 months ago
@MrSunnyOutside Well, have always thought, YT disputes are senseless! Was tempted somehow to be involved into this one and I really regret it. ... Am NOT "fan" of anyone... Also DETEST the modern times' superficial demands, when all is about fame and selling!!! My point was rater different - I may judge a rendition, only when listening to a LIVE performance, not a video clip, so when she does play, she puts her heart into it /am talking about a real playing, not posing for the camera/ Regards.

@mradkova, Last response,
Watch the video response Al Di Meola, you may not like it as there was a derogatory remark about Lady GAGA.
Not sure why anyone who is "good" would sell themselves in this fashion.
casyatbat 11 months ago

Bret6464 11 months ago

the way this woman played it totally killed the original meaning of the piece. Piazzolla meant for it to be solemn, tragic, and shocking--not coffee table, basso nova music. The violin playing was too whimsical and the percussion in the background was both unecessary and insulting to this piece and its creator.
brainwasher9876 1 year ago 22
@brainwasher9876 To call this interpretation insulting is maybe a little too critical. If it were composed to be played like Piazzolla's it would be pointless imitation. I prefer Piazzolla's but it isn't for all times because it requires a different state of mind for the listener and a deeper level of emotional commitment. Not all moments in your life will reflect this mood. If it is not for you that is okay. Surely she didn't mean to insult, though.
mattsp77 1 year ago 2
@mattsp77 the last thing I want to do right now is to start some kind of flame war, but I just want to point out that remaining faithful to an author's original intent does not necessarily mean pointless imitation. If that were true Jascha Heifetz would be considered a hack artist and not one of the greatest violinists of all time.
brainwasher9876 1 year ago
@mattsp77, You wrote that she did mean to insult.
Well, I don't think she cared one way or the other.
When you use a great composition like Astor's Oblivion and turn it in to elevator music then have the audacity to use that music as background music for an egotistic shallow fluff video where the focus is strictly on Chee-Yun & not the music, it is insulting.
So many great Artists & amateurs have honored Piazzolla by focusing on their interpretation of the music not themselves.
casyatbat 1 year ago
@casyatbat No. I wrote that she DIDN'T mean to insult Piazzolla's composition. Yes, Piazzolla's is better. So what? A company wanted to pay her to use her beauty and musical skills in an advertisement. So what? Earning a living doesn't make her the egotist that many on this thread are so absolutely certain that she is; certain and faultless enough to be able to pass judgment. My post was a polite way of saying that I think being hyper-critical of anyone is usually a bad practice.
mattsp77 1 year ago
@mattsp77 Well if you want to whore yourself out to be the next Madonna or Britney Spears, I have no problem with that. Make all the money you wish with but at least have the dignity to do it with your own music.
If she has no control over her image and allow this to happen or she's loves how she is portrayed either way it's disgusting.
Great & real artists don't need to sink to the lowest denominator. Just watch all other Piazzolla clippings & you will see what I am talking about.
casyatbat 1 year ago
@casyatbat A whore now! You have post on this thread from 2 to 7 months ago. You come back unsolicited by comment and yet you hate the video. You may think that Chee-Yun's composition is insulting and horrible but why is it that you keep coming back to try and diminish the enjoyment that anybody else may derive? I never made an inflammatory comment but merely suggested that perhaps we would all be better served by less malicious criticism. I listened once and moved on. It's easy, try it.
mattsp77 1 year ago
@mattsp77, Try this. You are a Chee-Yun fan and she is a great composer and writes beautiful music and then some some wanabe Britney Spear or Madonna takes your very hard work and turns it into Lounge - Elevator music then prances around pretending to play an instrument while mugging to a camera.
If her great compositions were reduced to background music for another's ego or just to make some cash rather than the beauty of the composition, you might find it insulting.

Imagine Schindler's List played to a christmas jingle, or the Bach Chaconne whiimsical.
brainwasher9876 11 months ago
@brainwasher9876 I've got you point and do not justify any insulting comments either... But this happens when the temperamental emotions are involved, rather than "pure reasoning" and we all are imperfect humans, following blindly our impulses sometimes. My point was different - any innovation, as far as it's NOT disrespectful or cynical /don't think this one is/ should be welcome. On the other hand, if a piece is powerful, any additional emphasizing on it could be too much of an exaggeration.

Continuation...
I mean the inner balance is so very important! But you've said, according to you the original message is changed i.e lost here, which I did not feel that way... Well, this is your personal opinion and I have to honor it the way it is no matter if I share the same view point or not....

I like the song but don't care for the video. It's a little ridiculous and doesn't go with the song at all. How does Oblivion = photoshoots??
shimegami621 1 year ago 2
I came upon this unknown violinist by accident. In the news there was a mention of a Stradivarius violin stolen in a UK airport by a S.Korean violinist Kym on her snack break. So I was curious and tried to find her on YouTube but couldn't find her, instead, I landed upon this violinist Chee-Yun and very much like her arrangement of Piazolla's song.

This version of Piazzolla's "Oblivion" is the most enjoyable to listen to.

is there an official score for this version of oblivion?? If so i must have!!

Rikatross 1 year ago
@Rikatross If you don't like it then just don't listen to it anymore. I just letting you know you can dance a Tango very well to this rendition. and if you guys really go hating on every other rendition of his pieces you seriously have just wasted hours of your life and I don't know learn to play it all and perform it and post on youtube or something. be a little more productive. Do something besides Bickering on youtube.
Hope you all have a happy Christmas ;)

@Rikatross p.s. sorry for my grammatical errors, I tend to do that when I am posting comments on line.
Rikatross 1 year ago
@Rikatross ,
"Haters", How old are you? Chick Corea, Herbie Hancock & Al Di Meola are classically
trained. Please don't compare Steve Vai to this syrupy Britney Spear rendition.
It's like comparing Kenny G. to John Coltrane or John Tesh to Chick Corea.
What upsets Piazzolla fans is this "video" is not about music.
It's about the deep love that Chee Yun has for herself.
Passion! I see someone pretending to play while with a fan on.
If you like this, then watch Pantene TV add on the right.
MrHoolits 1 year ago 2
@MrHoolits Ok, first of all if you read my comment, I said I was not comparing her to Steve Vai, Secondly I am a big fan of Piazzolla works. I dance, listen, and play his music. If you ever read his bio then you would know that he liked this style, mixing Jazz with Tango. and seriously her love for herself. Come on, it's a freaking advertisement. This is probably the only thing you have seen or heard from her. I never said that she is the best, but she's good.
Rikatross 1 year ago
@Rikatross, Astor played with great jazz musicians like Gerry Mulligan and Gary Burton.
Musicians like Al Di Meola, Tine Thing Helseth and others well known and not
so well known treat his compositions with heart, feeling, warmth and soul.
Chee-Yun treated it like commercial background elevator music, an after thought.
She should have used Rod Stewart's "Do you think I'm sexy". It's more appropriate! She gives Pantene shampoo commercial more respect than she gave to Astors composition.
MrHoolits 1 year ago 2
@MrHoolits Ha; please don't try to color this fine piece of work with your bias. I think the video is fascinating, and was enjoying it until reading your comment, which now nags me as I view it ("this video is about the deep love Chee Yun has for herself"). Your comment is more a reflection of you (ignorance, immaturity, cynicism) than anything about the video (sounds rather similar to your critique). Critics love to suck away others' enjoyment.
skyd171 1 year ago
@skyd171 Last comment:, as it is too painful to watch this video again.
I now understand & realize that the fans of Chee-Yun, John Tesh & Kenny G. considered this great music.
I hold Piazzolla, Miles Davis, Chick Corea, John Coltrane & the innovators of new & exciting music in a different light..
Fans of Chee-Yun, John Tesh & Kenny G. consider this exciting & innovative.
I only wished she used Madonna, Britney Spears, John Tesh or Kenny G. to use as background music

tojour, Good suggestion on the Holiday Inn.

Thanks for posting this!
gregoryusa1 1 year ago
@gregoryusa1 no. Piazzolla's work is complex... it may seem simple since one of his innate talents lies in the melodic nuances of his tangos.... this is a very elegant and deeply sentimental composition, with interesting shifts and variations, in timings and intensity... but also agree with you that if the ear perceives it as simplistic, so be it.. it was meant I am sure to be savored and and to delight ther listener above all else.

katydid41, Had she used her own music or Madonna/Britney Spears it wouldn't bother me as I would never see it.

If you'd listen to other pieces she plays, you'd know that she is freaking AMAZING.
araz4561 1 year ago

It devalues the artist's talent.
katydid41 1 year ago 2
@katydid41 @casyatbat I agree with you somewhat.
