The plane was told to land in Minsk temporarily because the destination airport (Smolensk) was closed. They were told by BELARUS ATCs, not Russian! But Kaczinski refused!! @MoscowMaestro That's a false statement. Smolensk airport was not closed. Russian controler said, that there are no conditions to land, but allowed pilots to make 1 attempt to land. There was misundersanding between controler, and crew. Basically, controler was leading them as everyting was fine, he thought that they gonna relay on thier systems mostly. While the pilots thought that everything is fine, and thier systems just went crazy due to weather conditions.
