  • no where near roxy music lol

  • I'm soooo glad i spared that vinyl back then when so many others in my collection were disposed of....silly me....but then again, who could foresee the Day when compacts would turn dinosaur-age gadgets?...

  • Japan was awsome! I have fell in love with you David!

R.I.P Mick Karn, you shall always be remembered!

  • Their music (as Japan and solo projects) pretty much shaped my early teens in the 90's when I discovered them in 1993... I was only 14 then...

  • No body really liked japan in the 80'$. But im 14 and id wanna be boiled alive then listen to the crap on the radio today

  • A desert island disc of mine.

    Never tire of this.

  • Have listened to this album since it's release, to this day. Have so many memories related it is untrue. Above all, it is is probably the most influential album of my life. Thank you guys and especially (as a Bass player) to Mick Karn. RIP.

  • JAPAN is the perfect band and David Sylvian is perfect

  • The greatest band that never was. I always felt they kept the brakes on and did what they wanted to do and not what what the fat cats wanted. I loved them then I love them now.

  • @MrSunshineTumnus I always thought that was Roxy Music..

  • Japan. Forever~!

  • Even after 32 years, this album still sounds progressive.

Japan was a great band: artistic, esoteric, and light years ahead of everyone else!

    Rest in peace, Mick Karn...

  • brings back so many good 80' s memories....best time of my life, I was in my early 20's and I believed anything was possible!

  • Excellent song excellent band

  • Deeply influenced by Roxy Music, as far as I can listen. Still a great band though!

  • totally shocked to hear about mick ,im an 80s child so grew up with japan had all their lps, they were so different at the time, loved their style, too young to die so sad.

  • R.I.P. Mick

Loved the Quiet life Album. It highlighted their cross over from glam to hate to say it 'new romantisicm, from sort of media obscureness to recognition. I think thats how you spell it. so many great tracks, Alien, Halloween, Quiet life, etc.

  • So wish i could find a video to this. Just love it. Thanks for posting it. Great memories. Brilliant band.

  • RIP MIck..

For Rachael, Karen, Kerry, Pippa, Rupert and Dave ...

    Fellowes Place, Plymouth. 1980

  • R.I.P. Mick - the most unique bass player who ever lived.

  • Goodbye Mick .

  • This was Japan, crossing over..

  • Loved this track back in the day, and was shocked to hear a quick snippet of it in the indie movie "Gas, Food, Lodging". Well not really. Allison Anders loved Japan.

  • brilliant track-prob my fav. japan tune of all.

    great band.

  • cooler than cool. That was Life in the 80's!

  • we love to run like you ! classic and i was there

  • PS Mick.. come on.. beat this thing

  • @discomage

he will. he has to, he's Mick Karn

  • My first and most profound musical love. I felt so different and alien being the only one of my friends into Japan at the time. Have followed sylvian through all his various guises since. It's true to say I wouldn't possess the personality I have today at 42 with 2 kids without this band. Just unfortunate that I have never had the pleasure to thank him in person.

  • ahh the emories of quiet life album.getting drunk on home brew in my mates that his dad made, listening to this at full pelt then being sick and going to bed, lol.happy days(time machine please)

  • be well mick. know that your fans love you and wish you well.

  • Carlb 1501......Great Post.....OldishMusic, welcome to our pleasure.

I cant think of a single band where i dont dislike at least 1 song, but Japan! I mean ALL albums and bsides........amazing music/voice

And we got some for u Instrumental lovers too :o)

  • LOVE YOUR MUSIC JAPAN ,THANKS FOR THE SOUND ...AMAZING!! LOVE JOLLYXXX

  • Carlb1501 - same here, used to listen to this on my walkman too! Such an awesome album and this track is definately my favourite :0)

Hoping Mick Karn pulls through this awful illness - thinking of you Mick x

  • Saw Japan three times in the 80's - completely ruined themselves with the last album but were way ahead of the game until then. Spooky, freaky and downright brilliant.

  • Perfect song. Anything Japan did was perfect, even "Don't Rain on my Parade".

  • RIP Malcolm. But Japan made their own way. Oil on Canvass is a singular masterpiece. In this track one can hear the beginnings of the classic Methods of Dance, Sons of Pionners, Gentlemen Take Polaroids.

  • i love Japan,saw them in 1982 AWESOME...

  • @TheSluddsy1

    lucky to see them !!!!

  • @TheSluddsy1 I saw them a year later in 1983 at Hammersmith Odeon London.

  • @rippleway123 they split up at the end of 1982 so it must of been 1982

  • このアルバムの中じゃこれが一番!

  • means so much to so many ! wayne o connor x

  • People love or hate Sylvians work my X used to say it was suicidal personally i loved japan and have just about every Sylvians solo stuff. I personally think he is one of the top song writers performers UK has produced

  • can,t agree more . My family hate him aswell. I taught my kids to sing a fire in the forest. If they are bombarded with any music they will like it .

  • @Timbarwell that's enough 4 me

  • i was 13 when this came out the age my daughter is now. thank god for japan and others because my daughter is just bombarded with such a load of crap and living in the usa i'm stuck with jonas brothers and country music ugh!!!!!

  • yo creo que se parece a billy corgan algo

  • corgan se parecera a el...

  • A summer house in Texas, searching for Siberia

  • This shows the versatlity in Sylvian's work,

His new solo album is due next month and I can't wait.....

  • According to the kind of music David Sylvian had recorded since the split of Japan I wouldn t be surprised to learn that he had some trouble with a drug addiction or something -bitchin apart!- but that reminds me the case of another band that I used to like a lot TALK-TALK. Their last recordings were pathetic unfortunately even if their three first LPs were masterpieces. If you like great voices 8Uchihadragon8 and you don t know them I recommend "It s my life" FYI

  • You're joking, right? Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock are the best music Talk Talk ever made

  • The last recordings of Talk Talk were pathetic...? Are you talking of Spirit of Eden and Laughing Stock?? Are you serious? I love them far more than their early recordings, and there must be a reason why they are generally considered absolute classic masterpieces of the entire history of rock by many music critics and magazines.. But yeah, they could all be wrong....? :) Have another listen!

  • I share your pain, i was born in '94.

  • Well Japan was one of the best bands at that time

FULL STOP. I was very lucky to be able to see them on stage and that s a wonderful memory.

The concert was very intense and the public was very respectful and enthusiastic! Such a shame they had to split up and so unfair for their fans.

I m sorry to say that the music of David Sylvian

had been very tepid and pretty boring since then

even if he thinks the contrary actually.

  • I agree, I love Japan.

But, David Sylvian wasn't as good solo.

I found his solo work a bit boring as well.

    His voice got too deep.

  • Japan are an amazing band, side one of this album is near perfect. This song sounds like a darker Roxy Music.

  • If you like Japan and Duran Duran youll love Ultravox and Roxy Music

  • I love those two aswell! Especially Roxy Music. Every song of theirs I've listened to or got is just... Out of this world...

  • Ah ,no comparison to Duran, sorry, totally different bands.

  • They are totally different bands, but what I was saying was that Japan have set a milestone that no other band, including Duran Duran, couldn't meet. I just used the band as an example.

  • Supremely cool song. I remember meeting a guy in the 80's and he was psyched when i told him i was a huge Japan fan...we seemed to be the only ones around! People thought they were cool because they liked OMD (amongst others)...but we knew Japan was where it was at...& still is in my eyes x

  • such a great song!

  • Japan had such fantastic back material - they still stand the test of time. I think they were disadvantaged by being ahead of their times in so many ways...

  • Used to listen to this album on my Walkman, everyone else was a punk at the time, they couldnt undestand this beautifully crafted music that still had a raw edge to it. Funnily enough they all got into it when the Duranies hit town. Anyone who has posted on here is like minded person and its good to be amongst you. Still my favourite band of all time.

  • Cool message brother of soulfull music.

  • Thanks mate, wonderful band, still listen to them every day.

  • Yeah the lip gloss has faded and the winklie-pickers dont fit no more!

    But the tunes live on.

  • Yes, I remember those "walkman" days. I listened to Japan on a daily basis in the early to mid '80s. I couldn't start my day without a healthy breakfast of Mr. Sylvian's voice to help me get through my lonely days in a small town in England. Japan meant so much to me...still do.

  • Still mean so much to me too, been listening to Polaroids a lot recently, just dont think they got the credit they deserved, they where pioneers and so bloody talented, just listen to the live (oil on canvas) version of Methods of Dance, its so unbelievable, just perfection.

  • Taking the train from Toronto to Detroit with my walkman and a Japan tape. Cherry, I know what you mean.

  • @carlb1501 and me i agree then joy div

  • @carlb1501 Amen brother!

  • @carlb1501

I'm with you! In toto with what you said and you know what? The masses will never get this music, it's not in their programming to do so.

  • Really happy days!

  • love this track, still had a bit of the raw edge from the past albums, could see them sliding into techno pop from here on in, not to say I did noiot enjoy it, saw them 8 times in concert and each one was amazing

  • such a lucky guy!! i wish they will do it together again, just one more time.

  • been a fan for infinity good to hear there are like-minded souls out there that love this guy

  • What a shame that David Sylvian really hates his Japan period! So all Japan fans hoping on a 70/80's reunion concert will for ever be disappointed and I'm one of theme!!

  • i cant belive i still remember the word's,30 year' later!

  • GREAT!!!!!!!!

  • I really don't care how much Sir David Sylvian suffered to make this music. It lives and is powerful enough to live - without the maker - and always will be.

So see you on the other side then, Dave.

  • Pure brilliance? Surely.

  • Oh god, I've been waiting for a year for someone to finally put this up.

  • One of my favorites from JAPAN!

    Thanxx for posting :)

  • I have always love this:)

  • hey: thanks for posting this wonderful song.

while you are about it: could you do the same for "all tomorrow's parties"?

i have been trying to get someone to do it, and since you've got "quiet life", why not you?

    pweeeeeeeze?

  • luv the echo feeling of this song, adore Rob's guitar solo, also in "Halloween" as well :D!

  • this has always been my favorite of their "non-single" tracks

  • Love it!
