1957 - was this the prototype? They certainly weren't deployed in Europe then - the local airbase had B47s and B36s. Funny how such a big 8 engined plane tried to do a 1/4 barrel roll - probably because the rival RAF's Vulcan could do a full barrel roll and was fully operational in 1956
But the B-52 bomber had far more payload and range than the RAF Vulcan. This bomber was never intended to do acrobatic maneuvers--after all, it's a bomber, not a fighter.
A beautiful and awesome aircraft.....showing our nation's Might! Be Blessed, be thanksful to all those that served on the front lines, on the ground, in the air, on the high seas! Salute them all! Be blessed
Wow, hadn't realized just how much I miss that sound and feel when the engines rev up for take-off. It vibrates your bones. Carl Malden was really that young once?
Watching this beauty makes me all the angrier at that nutcake AF general who put a 52 into the ground practicing for an airshow. If you search here you'll find several vids. Just search "B-52 crash". No one would fly with him after a number of dumbo acts, and in the right seat that day was a guy who had the assigned co-pilot pulled just in case the screwball general effed up. Well, he did, with the replacement right seater's whole family watching.
I remember the first time I ever saw one of these things fly - when you see one of these planes in the air, you know it means business!!
I don't know why they just don't build brand new B-52's if age is a concern. We have all the designs, plans, etc. Just build new ones when the old ones are no good anymore.
working parts are replaced so regularly on the Aerospace machines , it is somewhat laughable to call them either old , or decrepit . Replace my joints , or my organs every 5 years and I'll still kick your arse at 100 .. regardless.
A number of years back, I toured a B-52, and made a point of asking the crew what they thought about claims to keep the 52 in service another 50 years. They seemed very confident in their assertion that it wasn't going to happen.
But you never know, there is no other American plane like it, it might stick around. But in the age of long range missiles, I have to wonder the likely hood of an 80+ year old bomber remaining in frontline service.
We should take the mothballed 52's and rebuild them to current "H" standards (or better) and put them back into service. many were retired with fewer hours than the H's current;y in use. It would save taxpayers money and give us more of these wonderful aircraft in service. At the least, rebuild them and mothball them in case of conflict.
Yes, that is true. Some of the mothballed could be recommissioned as well The 52 will probably outlast the B-1 and B-2. if e were smart, we would start production of an upgraded 52. We have all the technology that we need to produce an even better 52 with better ECM and payload capabilities. it would save an enormous amount of tax dollars. IMO
AMERICA LOST VIETNAM WAR BECAUSE OF ITS BIASED MEDIA!!!
Since anti-war, liberal American media always focused on American and Vietnamese civilian casualties, and ignored the enemy's casualties and Vietcong's atrocities against its own people as in the case of Hue's massacre of 5000 civilians in 1968, to mislead Americans to become against Vietnam war. Ho chi Minh, founder of Vietnam's communist party once said, " the war is not decided in Vietnam's battle fields but in CBS studio!"

"Linebacker II' I have a good freind that flew the lead BUFF as the aircraft commander on the night of Dec 26th with the on scene commander in the IP Seat.
The movie was "Bombers B-52" from 1957 look at IMDB
I don't agree with the comments on the B36. They were a maintenance nightmare.
That's why the B-52 was rushed in to production. The original design looked an awful like the Russian Bear. Essentially, the guys at Wright-Patterson said they wanted an all jet strategic bomber. It was redesigned over the weekend in a hotel in Dayton, OH. I missed seeing both fly from Ellsworth when I was a kid. I saw the BUFF take off several times since.
Ah, the good old days of SAC! It's amazing this bird is still in service today! It's a shame things are so bad with the USAF's command structure at the moment, I hear there was a plan to uprate the BUFF's engines to more modern and effecent ones but somehow they just couldn't get the funding or any support. God bless our Airmen and troops, it's a hell of a time to be in the service!

Man, Batesphotos...what a cool idea!!! I used to watch the B-52 as a kid at local airshows at Castle AFB in Merced Ca. Military aircraft went from silver color to green camouflage to the present
dull gray color. The B-52 has been around for all three paint jobs.
