@trinketbox1 I didn't look at it that way - I thought it was nice that he went up to Join Micky. :) It's nice to see all of the guys in one shot. Of course, isn't Mike in this concert too? Wish they showed him playing it too.
@trinketbox1 Oh, yes, I know that Mike didn't tour with the guys in the 80s, except he joined them in L.A. for one show in at the Greek. Then I knew all 4 got together for a short tour (in England I think??) and I thought this concert was the one with all 4. But I wasn't sure. I knew that Mike was instrumental in the creation of video music with his company Pacific Arts. :)
I just now realized that Mickey Dolenz was an "open hand" drummer like Carter Beauford of the "Dave Mathews" band. You can pull of some "wicked" fills drumming like this that you couldn't with the traditional overhand style, I've heard...
the monkees,,,now that i think of it,,could easily be considered the first "super group."
i know they werent the greatest musicans..i believe the first so-called super group of my day... was...not THE Cream..but just plain.....Cream.
but if you know how many number one hits the Monkees had..and that they were put together to form a group for purely commercial reasons.. i say they fit that name nicely.
Maybe because the bass is cranked on this one, but this version reminded me more of the Run D.M.C. "cover" than the old studio version. Mary, Mary, why ya buggin?
They absolutely COULD play their own instruments... they ALL could. But, they were just never allowed to until the later years. They wen't on tour... playing their instruments...live. You can't "Milli vanilli" that!
You are right about Mickey's drumming. He was much better than he gave himself credit for. Have you ever heard that kick-ass job he did on the live version of "Circle sky" from the movie "Head". I guess Mickey was the most self-conscious of the four.
@bc191: Right. He learned to play drums I think after the Monkees series started, or had a little drumming experience but not much at all. Imagine that, and then played on the records when they were on the recordings for real. Man that could not have been easy.
God, I remember being so ticked off that Mike didn't tour with them in the US that summer...if I'd known that, I would have gone to England to see them as a friend of mine in Manchester had an extra ticket.
I love this song live though...the way they kind of funk it up...and Micky's drumming is so much better than he gives himself credit for.
Wow, they really do kick butt live!! Amazing considering they're in their mid-50s, and rarely performed with Mike Nesmith during their post-60s heyday. Too bad the reunion fizzled out shortly after their European tour.
Actually he was one album off in the introduction. This was on the second Monkee's album, not the first. But it was so long ago one can't blame him for not getting it right.
All the guys who made up the monkees were just pure talent. The fact that they're still performing today proves it! And yes they could alway play their own instruments make no mistake about that!
Well, from what I've read, Mickey took drum lessions to learn how to "fake" playing for the camera. Tork and Nesmith were already accomplished musicians. In fact I hear Mike showed up with his guitar at their first recording sesson, only to discover THEN they had session musicians. But yes - Mickey quickly became a great drummer in his own right, and they toured in 1967 to prove that they COULD do it. They just didn't get the chance till later on on their records.
I really think they proved themselves to be real musicians, great band, great songs, could u please post more of this concert? I myself was in 2002 in Wembley, Mickey and Davy in concert, great experience
artdriver, you're the dork since you obviously missed Isaac's "" marks in his post--he was being sarcastic about their not being able to play their own instruments. read before you start cutting someone down.
They could play their instruments. Mike and Peter were muscians, but weren't allowed to play on their first albums due of the production schedules of both the show and producing those albums. There was no time to shoot a TV show, then record songs from scratch. So Don Kirshner had studio musicians play the tracks and The Monkees in the studio to sing after they spent all day shooting the show.
Despite the unfortunately jerky handheld, video, this is so worth listening to. Mickey especially is in fine form both on drums and lead vocals.

Sadly the rock world has rejected them ... They sold more albums then beatles and Elvis put together ...

Note that Davey Jones just can't let Micky Dolenz have the spotlight; he has to go up by him to sing. What a twirk.

@sshelget Nesmith basically vacated performing with this group. He went on to do other things, like starting MTV.

Sorry guys..... "Mary, Mary" was not on your first album. Rather, it was on "More of the Monkees!"

The bassline on this tune is just so swoopy and sexy. I wish more people paid attention to basslines these days.

This is MARVELLOUS!
And, well done for an appearance that wasn't highly reviewed, (in the UK Press) too.

True. And, technically (but not literally) Headquarters was their first album. If you take my meaning.
