In an average Law Class, there's about 8-15 students who don't understand shit.
So if one of those "gunners" raise their hand to ask a question, these 8-15 shy students will end up understanding something.
Why the fuck caring about this ? Most of the people who raise their hand and ask questions to UNDERSTAND the fucking material end up in the top 10% sooner or later.
@WarrenAch its pretty important to know who is a gunner and who is asking professor question because he is really having a hard time on some matter. the one who bashes every single hand raiser is an idiot himself but it really isn't difficult to distinguish between a sincere and dedicated student and a showoff.....
screw these people, seriously. Why the hell make the assumption that they're talking to improve their grade? Excuse them for trying to get the most out of their education.
This video is a perfect example of "passive aggressive silent gunners." (1) They don't want you to understand; (2) they don't want the professor to clarify for someone else; (3) they want you to fail your finals, and (4) they resent those they perceive as "smarter" than them. You will never have the opportunity to ask questions in such a "safe" environment again. If something is unclear, ask. Ignore these types. They are trying to peer-pressure others into silence. Their attitude is repulsive.
Please - people who complain about relevant comments are wimps. It's a pet peeve of mine when the professor asks a question point blank and then the room stares at him like a dog that just got shown a card trick. It's annoying, juvenile, and it wastes my time. Answer the question or get the fuck out of the class.
There personality traits that make up a "gunner" are good ones for the legal profession. Initiative, confidence etc. Those traits alone don't make good lawyers but all things being equal they lead to higher salaries.
The quiet types often score better on exams but earn less after graduation. There's simply no getting around the fact that confidence and initiative are, and always have been, highly favorable traits in this profession.

This is very youthful advice. I suspect the people that constantly complain about "gunners" are the same ones that can't figure out why they can't get a job after law school. Kissing ass is a part of building relationships, and relationships are a critical component of career-building. To suggest that a room full of people should sit there like silent lemmings is a dis-service to law students, and undermines the role of the professor in maintaining order in the classroom.
Gunners are annoying and nobody likes them, not even the teachers whose ass they are trying to kiss. Teachers want more than one person to contribute to the discussion. By alienating your classmates with whom you will be working in the future, I don't really think you are helping yourself career-wise. This isn't to say that you should never speak up in class, just that you should do it in the same relative porportion as everyone else.
If in a class of 50 to 80 people, only 1 or 2 speak up, then it seems to me that the answer is to have 5 or 6 people join the conversation. The Socratic Method presume interaction and a unilateral discussion. The people who do NOT speak up actually create the vacuum filled by the so-called gunner.
And I'll add that this video doesn't distinguish between the intelligent gunner and the idiot who thinks they are intelligent.
Its one thing if the person speaks up and says something on point that is good to have in your notes - its another when the idiot speaks up and everyone knows the person is wrong or doesn't understand at all.

I'm a gunner. I keep my comments relevant to the lecture. I don't give a f about what anyone thinks. This Wong guy is a tard. Why doesn't he save the gum for off-camera?
IF I HAVE A QUESTION I AM GOING TO ASK IT but it will be on the RELEVANT class materials at hand that everybody wants to know but is waiting for someone else to ask and EVERYBODY FAILS it on the test!
This DVD is useful for anyone who can put their ego aside and actually take some advice. If you doubt whether the information on there is worthwhile, visit the site AllAboutLawSchool(dot)com and read the chapter listing to see how extensive this information is. Also, take a look at the testimonials.
I don't know about any of you, but I wouldn't want to spend much time with any of the people in this video. Not that that's related to the topic.
Gunners is a generalization. There are some people who speak a lot and are consistently interesting, others not so much. It depends on the person and the context.
But when I'm in an civ pro class that only last an hour, I don't want to learn about how interesting someone in my class is... I want to learn about personal jurisdiction. Usually, gunners in law school raise their hand just to break hypotheticals, which is completely unproductive.
I read One-L, Law School Confidential, Law School Insider and the like. Although those are all decent products, we've packed this DVD with the most practical strategies and test taking tips that will help you rise above the law school curve. Please visit "AllAboutLawSchool(dot)com" and read our testimonials :)
Each class I take in law school costs me $109. In a 100 student class that is 70 minutes long, that is $156 per minute we are paying, collectively, for that class. That's why gunners suck if they don't think before they speak.
As I have been on both sides of the lecturn let me say that gunners are used as a socratic tool, the more they are allowed to speak the less they know. If you want to do well ignore them.
Who will attend class allowing me to half-ass my way through law school? A gunner.
Who is going to answer the question that I will pass on (even if I happen to know the answer and by some miracle decided to attend class)? A gunner again.
It's one thing if someone is talking about irrelevant material or their own stupid change of law arguments, but I fail to see the point of having these tools complain about others who constantly speak up. Yeah, like you're really concerned about getting more out of the professor's mouth. Anyway, these videos are a just an attempt to push some worthless DVD. Here's a thought, just go to class and read the material.
i think these people talking about gunners are a bunch of whiners. Quit whining. That's life. There's always going to be people who want to put a better foot forward and get in the professor's good graces so that they can ensure their good grades. Stop whining about it and get over it pussies.
1L year a friend told me I was a gunner and it pissed everyone off. I had no idea; I wasn't talking in class to raise my grade, or show off, or impress anyone. I was just genuinely interested, and like to be engaged in class discussions. I changed my gunner ways, but I was never really convinced there was anything wrong with it. To some extent I get it, I've suffered the horrible gunners too, but some people, like me, learn better by engaging in a dialog than just listening to a lecture.

It's one thing to say something intelligent in class, but another thing to waste everyone's time EVERY.SINGLE.CLASS.PERIOD. Learn how to argue a position vocally with the Prof during office hours or with other students outside of class.
undergrad borderline-gunner planning as 0L to reform, listen, just nail exams as 1L. In clinics, moot, etc, be vocal. But, definitely not in a lecture, even if it is socratic.
Law school is supposed to prepare you for what you will be doing in the future: arguing a position VOCALLY and not just on paper. So, performance on a written final does not assess a student's performance as a lawyer. If a student is taking your time and money and you just sit there not defending yourself, how are you going to defend others once you get out of law school?

I have to say, I think I was a "gunner," and I was number one in my class first semester.
Half the time, I'm just answering profs questions to fill the awkward silence since other cowards are too scared to speak up.
I don't give a f*ck about the other people in my class - each one was just an obstacle to my A. If I don't understand, I'm speaking up.
Frankly, if my "gunning" wasted other peoples time, BETTER FOR MY GRADE if they learned less.
Blame the grading system, not me.
