I built a small hoop house last fall, and my daughter wants to know were her's is at. She told me that she want's to grow some extra things so she could take part in some of these seed swaps and things. She is also still another year away from going to high school and is looking forward to working in the green house the school has.
I know this offer is void at the moment but I wanted to tell you that you rock. I love what you are doing, I dont have kids but i do get my little cousins involved in self sufficient life. we shouldnt rely on someone doing everything for us and gardening is a good start. I do not get involved with the community that often, but you have inspired me. im going to go to my local elementary and talk to the school about the children doing an activity like this. :]
This is awesome. Keep up the good work, I will pass this along to the elementary schools in my area. The more kids are invovled in what they eat, the better choices they will make as they grow up. I hate that I started gardening this late in life, but now is better than never. Watching you and others on YouTube inspired me. I planted some of the seeds you sent me and they sprouted. Can't wait to put them in the yard. Thanks again.
Ray your so wonderful you bring the sunshine to the classroom with this project. I see your energy is so much like the sunshine. You have the glow is being excited about life.
i really try myself to do the best i can when it comes to helping the enviroment and just from a simple act your doing u can really make a difference with global warming.
Just to add how important and impacting this kind of thing is....When I first started gardening...I had some strawberry plants, and my roomates daughter was SHOCKED to see strawberries growing on a bush lol....she thought someone made them....had no clue that they grew outdooors!!
And not only does it help them learn about growing food, but it teaches them about taking care of something, that you have to work for something good, shows them how they can get satisfaction from doing stuff on their own, & it helps them eat more healthy. No additives or preservatives like most food in the stores! :-D My daughter is 4 this year, and she's helping me grow my stuff. Her own plant to look after this year is a sunflower. (It's what she picked.) We'll see how it goes :-D
kids need to learn about plants, just this week in the grocery store I overheard 2 teenagers talking about how beans are made in a factory than put in a can !
ok so this video was posted April 5th 2011 BUT you said as of April 2011 you will not be doing this offer any more. Does this mean it didn't happen? Im confused.
Ray, good people like you are few and far between in this world, and it's a pleasure to know you (all be it via youtube). Not only have you inspired me by watching your videos, I know you have inspired others. I remember as a kid in first school and the teacher getting us growing cress on cotton wool, and me being excited and checking to see how much it had grown. That memory has always stayed with me. What you're doing is amazing and will inspire and educate others, hat off to you. :)
ray! you never cease to amaze me! i cannot believe all the giving you are doing! keep it up because it is because of people like you that make love grow. also, this will teach kids to stay out of trouble and build a more aware society. i believe that if we teach kids that veggies grow from "plants" not from "grociere stores" we will have a healthier society.
Ray The seeds you sent me to the Dominican republic . Well i planted about 120 plants in different dirt and in different containers. I lived 27 years on different farms and this is not new to me Welll not one came up . I believe when they came thru customs they x-rayed them and ruined them I dont know . Have you heard this from other people? So the Idea for schools is out for me unless I can fiqure out the problem.Thank you forbeing so kind
@Praxxus55712 Ray, I got your address, Thanks! I'm sending your Jelly Melons today. I'm not sure if they will grow in your zone, but hey, it's worth a shot right?
They are also called African Horned Melons or Kiwanos. They are FULL of seeds. If you get any fruit, be sure to put some sugar on it. Otherwise it just tastes like green goo. :-) I have 10 packs left, so if anyone wants them, send them to my blog at tinyurbangarden.blogspot.com
Super project Ray! Here's an example of the power of sowing success. My daughter was home for 2 weeks and helped me sow seeds which came up before she went back to England yesterday. She had never had any interest in gardening before. Today she phoned to say she had bought all the seeds and planters to set up a small veg garden in her home in England and was really excited about it. You are going to do that for countless children. Brilliant!
SO freakin'awesome...Gardening shoulda been included (along with the typical basics of cooking & sewing) as a seasonal segment 4those who took HomeEc. The gardening would've probably been more practical across the board, AND would've been able 2b useful in CONJUNCTION with what they learned with regard 2cooking.
I think that's such an awesome idea! I am so happy that your doing this. My son is so excited over the seeds that you sent us. He picked all my tomatoes before they ripened last year. This year he's so excited! I don't think I'll have that problem. Gardening is so great for kids, It teaches so much. Too many people don't know how to garden. We need to reinstill this in our youth!
Very cool! I can attest from first hand experience that this is a great program. My wife is an elementary school teacher and we grow a bunch of vegetables at home (with our 3 year old twins) that were leftovers from a similar project her school participates in.
It's a lot of fun for us and immensely educational for the kids. I hope a BUNCH of people take advantage of this. Very cool.
Awesome, Ray : ) One of my nephew's science classes already did radishes, and after they germinated, they all got tossed (!), and some were still growing out of the drains in the sinks! Now I have my nephew sprouting seeds in a red cooler, and his window sills are filling up with seedlings : ) we also dug up a nice 12x24 plot in his backyard.
I'm getting contact information for my step son's teacher. If she want's to go with it I'll donate the potting soil and time to teach the kid's how to make their own paper pot's. Maybe even give them full can's of soda as a treat then we can recycle them after! such an awesome idea Ray!
@Praxxus55712 woops, I am clearly not good at following directions, loI. I sent you a message but I will give the principal your email address above and they can get the garden rolling along. :)
Not everyone gets a newspaper but I'm fairly sure most folks use toilet paper...heehee! People could save up tp tubes for seed starting too! :) Just another idea for everyone interesting in recycling in small ways.
