@fjl05 While you're certainly entitled to your opinion, I would like to point out a few of the better bluesmen who play (or played, may they RIP) Strats.
*ahem*
Buddy Guy, Eric Clapton, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Jimmie Vaughan, Jeff Beck, David Gilmour, John Mayer, Robert Cray.
@fjl05 Good stuff, no doubt about that, but my personal opinion (again, all opinions) is that the low-end on the Strat is the bees knees. That Paul sounds great, but the low end doesn't have the crystal clarity that a Strat has, and that sound on a Strat just makes my ears incredibly happy. ^_^
@bphillipps I'll admit that a Strat does have a cleaner sound but IMO that cleaner sound is better for JAZZ while the higher tone of the Les Paul is better for Rock and blues
I own both a Strat and a Les Paul. I usually practice with the Strat because with the cleaner sound, mistakes are more noticeable forcing me to improve my playing. My Les Paul is a Gold Top version just like GIlmour's on the other vid but without the whammy bar. I use that for the higher toned Blues/Rock sound. It rocks :)
@fjl05 nothing is "better suited" to blues... If i wanna play slide banjo with 3 strings through a JCM 800, then I will, there's no rules in music, ESPECIALLY not in blues.
Great Blues/Rock this man doesn't need speed to show how great he is.He gets the most out of every note he plays like all the greats.Always nice to see David out of his Floyd mode for awhile.
This is my FAVORITE Gilmour performance of all time. I have been watching this very clip for over 20 years. I got the "Les Paul and Friends" VHS tape and watched it until it was just about worn out, then I couldn't find it. Now, here it is. I'm sooooooo happy to have found it again!!!!
@juegas I have been a Pink Floyd fan since 1970. Read up on their history. They all met in art school. Before they were called Pink Floyd they called their band The Screaming Abdabs. They played mostly blues. You can find Pink Floyd blues recordings on youtube -- just search the term "pink floyd blues."
Although he is not playing a Les Paul in this vid, Gilmour has played them and plays them very well. In fact, the iconic solo on Another Brick in the Wall Part 2 was laid down with a Les Paul back in the late 1970's. Gilmour tears up a gold top Les Paul on his latest solo tour. You are right though, his signature guitar is the Fender Strat, no doubt. Pretty sure Gilmour could play anything with strings and then some.
It amuses me that the two best guitarists at that show (besides Les himself) don't play Les Paul guitars... they play Fenders. I'm not sure *why* that amuses me... but it does LOL.
'les paul and friends ' and he rocks up with a strat ? haha , this brilliant masterpiece cant be done with a gibson . a les paul would make it all juicy and blury
@goatface1000...Hey to you ;o)) It is quite ok, that you don`t mean the same as me. It is my opinion, and I adore Gilmour and think he is the best guitarist ever. Sorry, but we all have different taste in music. -Lisa-
@61floyd61 Django Stevie Ray Vaughan Buddy Guy Robert Johnson Blind Blake Les Paul Eddy Lang BB King Peter Green Jimi Hendrix Jerry Garcia etc etc. I think you overestimate Mr. Gilmour
The keyboard freak you speak of is Jan Hammer. He was a big dael at the time of this gig. I would have to agree that his presents here is not unlike that of a turd on the buffet bar.
wtf is this shit? Im sittin here enjoying david gilmour rock my ear drums when some douche bag at 1:20 starts spewing fuck from his keytar...totally killed the whole video
I thought the same thing. I saw this concert when it was recorded in 1988. The dude did the same thing while Eddie Van Halen was on stage. Yea....he can play...but why is he taking valuable solo time away from Hall of Famers in a tribute to the Great Les Paul?
I put all my money into keytar company stocks in the '80s. I figured it would replace the guitar. DAMN. Oh well, at least my idea for wearing your hair short on top and long in the back is still popular.
Maybe you don't think so Mr. 'Guitarmercy', but if you had seen the whole tribute special you would have seen that Les Paul was VERY impressed. Think I'd have to go with his opinion over yours. Sorry.
thats a sweet blues tone he got going on so i dont no why all the so called experts give the poor emg's a hard time.the red strat with the active pickup's was his number 1 guitar at the time as i think his black strat was on loan to the hard rock cafe so hallelujah its back in his hands again !!!!
The red Strat is one of David Gilmour's best Strats and was the main Strat in the post-Roger Waters era Pink Floyd. The EMG pickups made that red Strat sound like it does. Also he used mainly wireless systems on his guitar from 1980 up to 1996 (except for this performance here and when he played with Bryan Ferry at Live Aid and Pete Townshend). The Black Strat is to David what the black Gretsch 8-piece drum kit is to Phil Collins, a trademark.
In fact, Tony Levin was to be the first choice to replace Roger Waters in Pink Floyd as he played all of the bass guitar and the Chapman stick on A Momentary Lapse of Reason (he plays on whole album) but had to turn joining Pink Floyd as new permanent bass player down as he had touring commitments with Peter Gabriel. I think Levin is one of the greatest rock bass players and bass players in music history.

jan akkerman is wayyyy wayyyy better than all the guitarists everrr better than him dont say hes bad he is great buutt jan akkerman is the real king of guitar
Why would you go into a David Gilmour video and start rambling about jan akkerman? If you think "jan akkerman is "wayyyy wayyyy better than all the guitarists everr (LMAO), then go post a comment in one of his video. Besides, no one said Gilmour was the best ever. I just posted a cool old clip of him that many of his fans might never have seen. Cripes.
Jack White being picked over David Gilmour in Rolling Stone Ragazine's best Guitarist poll is insulting. They didn't even have Steve Hackett nor Steve Howe on that list. Yet they pick jabronis like Jack White who absolutely sucks and Kurt Cobain in the Top 20? That is a sacrilege. Gilmour became the King of the Stratocaster after Jimi Hendrix passed away. Gilmour could get more passion, heart and soul from the Strat than any of the Stratocaster players who came (apart from Mark Knopfler)
The keyboard player is Jan Hammer. He's a pretty accomplished player. But yes, he's annoying as heck in a Les Paul tribute video. He's all over the stage in the Eddie Van Halen clip taken from this same concert. He has no business being on that stage ... maybe at an Elton John tribute concert. But not one for Les Paul.
@Heatmi5er hey it's the 80s and miami vice is hotter than a 2 dollar pistol in a shooting match. it just shows gilmour can coax synth sounds out of his guitar. as a friend of mine remarked," there was some great dance music in the 80s" too bad most of it sucked wind musically
Good point. Rick Wright (God bless his soul) was the classical and jazz influence (he taught himself from classical music and some jazz) to Pink Floyd, Nick Mason was mainly a jazz purist, Roger Waters was folk and rock and David was the blues/rock/folk/jazz/classical/country member though blues trained on guitar.

My comment was that "Les Paul's are better" for playing blues than a Fender.
