One of my favorite pj harvey songs. I have to agree with a previous poster though that I wish they went further with the electronic turmoil of the studio version, this is not as good as the studio version. Joy is the only full out industrial-electro tune she has ever made. It'd be interesting hear a full out electronic assault of an album from her at some point. That's one thing she has not fully ventured into, apart from on a few tracks.
This song makes so much more sense after reading Flannery O'Connor's "Good Country People". It felt so great to sneak a peak into what inspires Peej! Love her!
I don't know how to download mp3's these days...if someone would hook me up with an mp3 of the original version of this song I would be much obliged. A friend of mine in college in '03ish gave me a mix of pj harvey and I loved it. this was on it, but the mp3 is corrupted now for some reason...
fuck! I've never watched a live version of "Joy" before and it was an apocalypse to me! I only knew the album version and I absolutely loved this one! one more reason why PJ's live gigs are unique and worthwatching!! thanx for sharing! xxxx
I was wondering when that Beefheart (guitars& time signature) influence of her parents eclectic musical tastes would surface.P J setting on "stun" ...beautiful.
the abrasive, discordant use of the guitars helps to underline and frame the turmoil found within the lyrical content of the song. They're not supposed to sound pleasant.
@kikkiokioli well i know that PJ doesn't aim to sound "pleasant", I'm not looking for a pleasant. I'm just feelin everything about this live version except the guitars.
Thanks for the response though. It is something i'm taking into consideration.
I agree the guitars sound out of place for this song. It is too rock and roll, which I feel was intended to liven up the song. But the album version guitars are much more relevant because it is so low, crunchy, heavy, suitable to the despondent content.
This is absolutely sick. Dont get me wrong by saying this because I love her studio work, but her live act blows it out of the water. I wish she would come out with a live album with all of the best versions of these songs because it really is something isn't it.
There's a BBC Radio live version (no video) from 1998 that sounds especially bracing, like the siren warning for a pending apocalypse. It goes on seemingly forever and when played loud it really does sound like the end of the world.
You're welcome, and in return, thanks for being the first to post that fabulous 'Grow, Grow, Grow' video a while back!
Too bad most of my recently posted videos aren't showing up in the "pj harvey" ---> sort by 'date added' searches, which is really holding down their number of views. And I have no idea why. And it's really got me annoyed. But I digress...
why are the little women the most intense?

I don't think Dylan , Beefheart , Costello or Mitchell could have painted a more bleak reality for Joy.Thanks for all .TJ

am I the only one that feels like the guitars sounds out of place and take away from the performance?

How I've interpreted it, anyway.

@BACCHUS441 It's by design- dissonance is a dimension you can ignore or "inhabit".
