water on it's own doesn't conduct electricity very well, hard drives for laptops have accelerometers in them to make the head gear disengage so that the head will snap in place to it's magnetic holder as well as putting the breaks on the spindle.

The only real issues could stem from water getting into the breather hole on the HDD, but that means having it in the water long enough for the water to fill the hard drive compartment of the laptop and for the water to actually move the small air pocket that would form around the breather hole.

I've also talked more people then I can remember on drying out their gear from water, soda, coffee, dog drool, cat wee and baby puke on tech forums then I can remember.

hmm i didn't know hard drives had breaks.. i just thought they decelerated freely... and i guess if the disk had hardly any weight to it, it would prolly stop pretty darn fast. Haha, and i doubt they filled the hole with distilled water, I'm sure there's a decent amount of conduction from all the extra chemicals, but it's prolly still a small amount of conduction :/ 8P
