Love to duck hunt myself but never understood why people only breast their birds. I know there is not a lot of meat on the legs wings and thighs but still is a waste. Why waste tasty meat that you work hard for?

My father and I went duck hunting. After we got home we dressed (cleaned out and plucked) our 4 ducks we put them in a freezer. When time came to cook them there was the most horrible odor throughout the whole house. It was even strong outside. It smelled of cooked swamp water. It was so bad that the dogs would not even eat them.

My question is what would cause them to smell and taste so horribly bad?

@Sithisnight Washing it in water can cause meat to go off, also gutting the duck early on and keeping the meat cool straight after mite help. Just quessing tho

im all for wildlife conservation and retaining our planets natural resources, but hunting is a way of life for all of us guys, right? lets the tree huggers go eat their foster farms chicken(: but before you do, go watch meet your meat, on the PETA website. these birds get better treatment throughout their life, and are way tastier and they are not steroid or antibiotic induced growers, therefore its a larger challenge to harvest the legs or wings off of small game birds. happy hunting ya'll!

wow i have never seen that way of starting. i was always taught to cut below the chest into the cavity under the breast. i will have to try this method this weekend. good vid. one thing that we do thought that helps early on to pull the blood out of the meat, is add table salt to the water in the bowl. also, if you find a feather sticking out while cleaning them, pop it like a pimple, because there may be a bb from the shot in there and i sucks to bite down on one trust me.
