Why must the japanese make all their robots dance *all* of the time?

because its the best way to show balance and range of motion?

That is true, but it does not really show how well it reacts against uncertain conditions.

What I mean is, when dancing, a similar amount of balance will be needed for each move, where as actually running on an uneven surface would be unpredictable, and more of a challenge.

Just look at the big dog.

Dancing does show range of motion, but that doesn't much help when a robot can't even walk on bumpy ground.

Companies want to focus on how good they look and how well they move, not how much difficulty they have traversing a small uneven area. Let them post on what looks good for the time being in a year when they still aren't walking on an uneven surface...then we can burn them all.
