Take a look at the work of the late Stevie Ray Vaughn. He did a lot of drinking and a lot of hard drugs. He and Tommy Shannon (Bass Player) literally crawled out of a bar one day and Stevie started vomiting blood. He and Tommy decided to stop and get clean and sober. You know what? Their playing got better. It was a terrible tragedy to lose him the way we did.

I'm not saying this guy isn't good, he's pretty awesome in fact... But he keeps using the same technique over and over and dressing it up to look more fancy than it really is... It's grid system photo reference art. I learned it in Highschool... Look at what Chuck Close does with the system if you want more of this art form. I am more impressed with artists who don't rely on ANY photo references.
