  • What about Constantine's letter to the Council:

Letter of the Emperor to all those not present at the Council.

(Found in Eusebius, Vita Const., Lib. iii., 18-20.)

There are clear antisemetic tones in his letter.

Was he not a murderer also while professing his faith?

  • @RPM11111 In 18 - 20 Basically his point was we should follow Easter as a very holy day and separate from what the Jews do as custom , because they don't follow Christ , they killed Christ , etc . I can't find anything on Constantine persecuting Jews . I did find a law he passed that stated that if a non-christian had christian slaves they could not by force circumcise them . Perhaps examples like these were the reason Constantine felt he should write about a clear division in Christian and Jew

  • @RPM11111 Also relations between Christian and Jews were very tense during Constantine's reign . The Jews had a history of persecuting Christians and looking down on them . It's not surprising that Constantine didn't have a high view of the Jews of the day , he never persecuted them though . He made his point in writings and made laws that overturned things that were unfair to Christians .

  • @haibane13 Thank you. While I ddn't mention "persecution" comments like below can fuel antisemitism:

"We ought not, therefore, to have anything in common with the Jews"

"we desire, dearest brethren, to separate ourselves from the detestable company of the Jews"

"your duty not to tarnish your soul by communications with such wicked people [the Jews]"

"it is our duty not to have anything in common with the murderers of our Lord"

This spirit is incompatible with the Scriptures (Rom ch8-ch11).

  • @RPM11111 I wouldn't say he was anti-semetic but rather really critical of the Jews of the day . Like everything you have to look at the context . If you read the whole thing you get that his point is that there ought to be a clear separation between Christian and Jewish customs and he's saying that for a reason . Jewish law was really hard on Christians and Christian Jews . Could he picked his words better for the future millenia (perhaps) but he was writing to the problems of his day
