Giorgi - I have no way of knowing how many people died in Ossetia; you're probably right, I doubt too 2000 people died during the Georgian bombing on the first night but any surprise attack using heavy weapons against an unprepared civilian city will undoubtedly cause widespread death and destruction.
ossetian separatists evacuated the city days before the conflict. they knew what they were doing. how come 2000 people did die in an evacuated city which has 20 000 citizens

Soviet empire inhabited this territory with ossetians which are from north, to provoce conflict if they needed that. this lend was called samachablo, its Georgian territory. Georgians and ossetians lived there togather and suddenly they wanted independence. Same story with abkhazia. 300 000 georgians were forced to leave their homes. These are historical Georgian lands and always will be.
The Ossetians have the right to choose their own destiny - maybe one day in the future they'll choose to be part of Georgia... but for now they want to be free and although you may not agree, you need to respect their basic human right of self determination.

We all know it was your president who started it all... that's why even today our Foreign Office asked russia to reconsider its statement of suspending co-operation with NATO (search Nato-Russia links 'should remain' on the BBC site).
There are a way with dealing with minority regions - look at the Catalans in France or Scots here... you choose to use force and, I'm sorry to say, your country must and will pay a heavy price for it.

It was a provocation by Russian backed South Ossetia. Georgia did attack, not the smartest decision, but Georgians had to response. Russians are to blaim for most conflicts and other problems ever happened in the former USSR.

Maybe Russia did plan a trap which saakashvili walked straight into - but then he was living in a dream world if he thought we'd fight Russia so georgia could claim a sake of a small patch of land full of people who didn't want to be Georgian! I agree with you that Russia needs to pull out of Georgian territories but, in the same way EUFOR is in Kosovo, Russia should stay in Ossetia and Abkhazia to make sure you never, ever try that again.

Giorgi - I have no way of knowing how many people died in Ossetia; you're probably right, I doubt too 2000 people died during the Georgian bombing on the first night but any surprise attack using heavy weapons against an unprepared civilian city will undoubtedly cause widespread death and destruction.

ossetian separatists evacuated the city days before the conflict. they knew what they were doing. how come 2000 people did die in an evacuated city which has 20 000 citizens

If they were able to get the civilians out of the city before the georgian bombardment then they should be commended... from what was reported here in Europe the Georgian government left their civilians to suffer as a cheap PR stunt.
BTW Why do you call them 'Ossetian Separatists'... people fighting for the indepenance of their own lands sound more like freedom fighters to me.

According to 1922 data, there were only 3 families of ossetians in tskhinvali. Soviet empire inhabited this territory with ossetians which are from north, to provoce conflict if they needed that. this lend was called samachablo, its Georgian territory. Georgians and ossetians lived there togather and suddenly they wanted independence. Same story with abkhazia. 300 000 georgians were forced to leave their homes. These are historical Georgian lands and always will be.

The Ossetians have the right to choose their own destiny - maybe one day in the future they'll choose to be part of Georgia... but for now they want to be free and although you may not agree, you need to respect their basic human right of self determination.

that is not their land and if they dont want to leave in georgia they can leave. Georgia is admited by international society and UN within given borders. every country has the right of its territorial integrity. minorities have the right to fight for independence if there are ethnic clensings and stuff like this going on like in cosovo. but in abkhazia for example ethnic clensins took place agains ethnical georgians which is admitted by UN also

q6. If Russia supports the independece of Abkhazia and Ossetia, then why are they annexing them into Russian Federation. Why not the complete independance if it is what they voted for? I know why they are scared of the precedence for Chechnya, Dagestan and numoerous other troubled regions within Russia.
q7. Plus, none of the referendums in Ossetia and Abkhazia are valid until the Georgian refugees who were forced out of there by Russian troops in 90's are returned back.

Secondly, I followed my own advice, I always do and read that ONE story you mentioned. Which in no way said that the death and distruction in Tskhinvali was carried out by Georgia. It was a result of Georgian military's defencive agianst Russian offensive.

Lashukebi you're right, we should welcome democracy and the will of the people! But it works both ways, If the Majority of Kosovas want independance, I support them - Likewise Ossetians (or for that matter the Scots)
As for Russia's actions - lets not forget they lost a lot of men in the initial Georgian bombardment and If there were British peace keepers killed like that I'd be screaming for blood too.

Search BBC site for 'Anger smoulders in rebel city rubble' or 'In pictures: Tskhinvali in ruins' and you can read from people who have been to South Ossetia rather than listening to your joke president on TV.
It wasn't Russia who started the war, it was your side. You used heavy weapons against an innocent civilian population when you thought the world's eyes were on Beijing.

The Russians may invade Ukraine. Due to the fact that unlike its close neighbor Belarus (which is Russia's bitch) Ukraine is moving well out of the Russian orbit by seeking membership in NATO and helping the US in Iraq. Russia is trying to return itself to superpower status. The first victim of this rampage has been Georgia. Russia saw its power in eastern europe start to fall when the baltic states joined NATO rather than the CIS. Russia is out of control and it must be stopped!

The big problem from the Russian position is Chechnya. If Russia thinks that Georgian breakaway states have the right to breakaway, then why does it not allow the breakaway state of Chechnya from Russia? Oh, no but the rules are different for Russia. Its fine for Russia to intervene in others issues but not for anyone to do the same in Russia. When Chechen's in Russia do exactly the same thing Ossetian's do in Georgia the Chechen's are killed in the hundreds of thousands - a true genocide.

Sout Ossetia is a Georgian province that is in rebellion. Russia making South Ossetians citizens is like severl counties in Arizona rebel and then Mexico giving the people in the rebel counties citizenship. Then when American invades those rebel counties Mexico then claims that they are protecting their "citizens" and thn Mexico invades the USA. Russia had no authority to make South Ossetains Russian citizens. That would ben like America making the people of Montreal citizens please wake up.

You cant make an entire race of people be part of a country when over 90% of them want to be independant.... and then you cant try to wipe them out when you think the rest of the world is watching the olympics.

You are missing the big picture. Russia planed this for months. You can not move those troops that fast with out planing it. Czar Putin is sending a message to the other countries not to mess with Russia. This will backfire because Russia is not a strong as they think they are. There was no "genocide" even human rights watch said the Russian claim that 2,000 South Ossetians was wrong.

Nobody is against Ossetians living there, we have very diverse ethnic groups living all over Georgia. We just want for Ossetia and Abkhazia to first receive the refugees, Russians have kicked out of there in 90's and then we can have the lgeal referendum. Also, You Russians are kings of double standards, what about Chechnya, why don't they get to have their own referendum on independence. How is that different from Ossetian situation?
