As a lifelong Democrat, it saddens me to say that Obama and Barney Frank - along with Dodd - all agreed months ago - indeed weeks ago - that Fannie/Freddie were in fine shape. Truth is, the Republicans had been calling for more regulation and warning about reckless lending practices of Fannie/Freddie for sometime. (BTW, whats wrong with Barney Frank? Bush pushed the tax cuts as a stimulus plan. He got the cuts and the economy was still bad. Republicans are making the same argument now. Why would a bank give out loans to a person who isnt likely to pay them back unless GSE's like freddie and fannie are willing to buy up those loans thus removing the fear of loss risk involved in lending. Except he didnt say that, did he? The market is a system of profit AND loss. The whole point of risk assessment is that you are assessing whether the borrower will pay you back or not. Government involvement including slashing interest rates, Freddie/ Fannie buying junk loans etc... is what caused the crisis.
