Isn't it supposed to be pointing up when it's in the 'off' position?

I have three black wires, two connected together on one screw, the other on the other screw. Very difficult to connect the two twisted wires on the screw. Why do I have three black wires?

If this person's house has proper color coded wiring, he just made a direct short to ground through the switch.

This is a switch at end circuit. The white wire should have been coded black at the switch and light to show that it is now a hot wire.
