After buying the Twilight Zone DVD boxed set, I thought of Mr. Death as being the equivalent to Mandy Patinkin's character Rube in the series "Dead Like Me". Of course, Mr. Death used his spiral notepad instead of Post It Notes, because they hadn't been invented yet.
Ed Wynn, as an actor, went up 1000 percent with me on this show. He is not his usual clown, but gives a great serious performance. It's like Carol Burnett's role as a farmer's wife during the Vietnam era in "Friendly Fire" -- a complete turn around for her. It showed how she too has what it takes to be a well rounded actress. I rate Ed's performance as great !
This was the second episode of the twilight zone i ever saw the first one is the one relating to kick the can and those two to this day are two of my absolute favorites to .
Is there anyplace where episodes two ad three can be found and posted without commentary, so that the viewer can just let the shows writing do its work on their heart? Thanks. :)
ONE for the angels may NOT have all the elements and twists and suspense of the best twilight zone episodes of the classic era (and for me, the only era), BUT like Lou the bumbling sidewalk pitchman, its an underdog show. For me, the pitch that he portrays at the end is a great scene. It actually is a bit of a tear jerker when he is able to distract "death" long enough so he misses his appointment, and truly completes his Pitch for the Angels. I give it a 8/10 !!!
I always liked this episode because of Murray Hamilton as Mr. Death. I don't know why, but I always liked the notion of the Grim Reaper as this no-nonsense bureaucrat who just wants to get things done with and by the book. Plus he gets some good lines.
@smallredrocks Thanks for your input:) There is a nice feel to this episode, I just believe compared to the series as a whole It deserves a 6/10. The acting really did help this episode and I can defiantly see where you could rate it higher :)
I liked this quite a bit, mostly because of the actor who portrayed Death. His aura and demeanor is both hilarious and realistic. I think I would've given it at least 7/10.
@smallredrocks just so you know, Murray Hamilton was death in this episode, and he also played the infamous and emotionally detached Mayor of Amity in the classic blockbuster JAWS. I recognized him immediately yesterday while watching this episode on the marathon on scify channel. great performance.
I would have to say 5/10. This would have been a beautiful episode if they had just put more emphasis on "the midnight scene" The accent of it wasn't as strong as it should have been, therefore, didn't have much of an impact on me. In terms of acting I thought is was a bit sloppy. Not much anxiety in the suspense though, needed more dilemma. Very alluring and charming plot! aMaZiNg Review!!!!=)
A great review once again! I agree with most of your points, however, I think it deserved a generous 8/10 :) It was a wonderful story with great acting, but I can definitely see where you're coming from with some of your negatives :) Each to their own I guess! :D

i think your critique of these shows, most likely due to your young age, is way off.
you have to understand in the fifties, they did not have big budgets to pull the kind of endings you may have expected.
Shows like this make me nostalgic for the past.

I loved this episode, 9 out of 10. I wont go into any fine detail as to why but the older you get the more you can "feel" this episode.

@mst3KGf Yes, It was great acting. I thought Mr. Death lost his touch at the end though. Thanks for the feedback:)

And also, the show was just starting to find a feel for itself, so yeah, the first couple would be less than exceptional.
