I have to disagree with most of the posters. The officials took this play off and made both mechanical mistakes and missed some calls. If the ball went across the goal line into the endzone, it is a dead ball (NFHS rules). Also, a spkie is considered a forward pass. The play should have been blown dead after the spike, flag thrown for an illegal forward pass and the game over. Neither coaches nor players messed up here, 5 officials did.

Well, you've got the rules correct but unfortunately your interpretation is wrong. The ball never crossed the goal line. That short kick was recovered at about 2 yard line. About that spike, it wasn't a typical spike that you can see from a QB, which is a forward pass hitting the ground. If you analyze this video frame by frame, you can actually see that the ball didn't hit the spot beyond the spot of the pass. It was rather the same spot, which makes it a backward pass.

After closer review, I would have to say that it was a backward pass from the way he threw it. I am still upset that neiter official under the posts hustled toward the end line or to be equadistant with the ball carrier to make the judgement. Honestly, I only watched this once when I posted. I am critical of myself when officiating. I feel officials should be ready and anticipating plays such as these, that's all. It could go either way, regardless.

If you understand the game of football, you would understand why you'd send 2 people back. There were safeties back in case they decided to run a fake FG, pass play.

You would make for a terrible head coach. If you sent in everyone to block, all the opposing team would have to do is run a fake field goal pass. Since all your guys are rushing in, there'd be noone to cover the tight end who let his block through and is running a fly route. He would be wide open for an easy TD.

So they were expecting the kick to come up short and sent a couple players to field it because until it goes out of bounds, it's a live ball. Search "Leon Lett fumble" on Youtube, and watch the first video. You'll see how the ball wasn't live until the defense touched it (blocking the kick doesn't count as a touch).

Im a High School football referee I dont know if they play by national federation rules or not but most states do. By rule any kick (free kick, punt, field goal) that breaks the goal line is a dead ball and can not be advanced out of the endzone. The refs blew that one
