To anyone who thinks genesis were not musically complex after hackett left, this was a commerically successful pop song written with verses that vary between 6/8 and 7/8, with some 5/4 bits thrown in, along with standard timing. Genesis were great, no matter what the lineup was
I`m not a die-hard Genesis fan but I like a lot of their songs and this one stands out. To me it represents the perfect blending of Prog Rock & Pop Rock, the transition Genesis was going through during that period in their career. Besides it`s a major classic.
Are there any songs which feature Rutherford or Banks very prominently on backing vocals? I mean it's quite easy to place Phil's voice on early records, but I can never seem to recognise the others. I've listened to Banks' 'The Fugitive' so I know how he sounds, but like I said, I can never seem to pick him or Mike out on recordings.
@JeauxBand If you listen to Carpet Crawlers, Tony has the higher harmony. And if you really want a treat, search YT for "Shepard". Peter Gabriel and Tony exchanged lead vocals on that one. Also, I don't think Tony sang much if any backup during the IT tour, so you can hear Mike as there are several songs where he is the only backup.
what happened to the video of this song that MTV used in its heyday. It's the one from the from the 3 sides live album. This vid is close, but if i remember right, phil is shirtless and he does a lot of that strange gesticulation. Its my favorite version of this song and I cannot find it.
The very best of prog rock. Amazing time signature movement: 4/4/, 5/4, 6/4, 7/4. Collins' vocals moving over and against the instrumental accompaniment. Great!
This takes me back...I had heard "Turn It On Again" a few times on FM radio...didn't know the song/band until I saw the original(?) video -- 1 big thanks to MTV for that...purchased Duke perhaps the next day!
I was happy for the group and their success in the 80's. Every album had @least a few gems, but I wouldn't have loved this band so much based on their output that decade. Yes is great, but The Lamb and Foxtrot broke the "tie" in favor of Genesis.
how can yousay the second side of abacab is weak?isn't dodo/lurker , another record on side two?personally think abacab is brilliant, not quite as good as duke.after that they had about five great songs on the next three albums combined(not including three sides live) peace
Agreed - Dodo/Lurker is still one of my favourite Genesis tracks... "Meanwhile, lurking by a stone in the mud, two eyes looked to see what I was. Then something spoke, and this is what it said to me... brilliant
Lol I was at this gig. I took a few photos. I hid my camera and lenses in my trench coat pockets. I cut the lining so the equipment fell to the bottom of the coat so the bouncers only checked as far as the top of the pockets. Fucking Genius or what.
A bouncer inside told me to stop taking photos...yeah right. So I just walked around the other side of the hall...silly bouncer.
Ther is no doubt that 'Duke' is their best album as a trio. It's almost a masterpiece. Abacab could have been also, if side two hadn't been so weak. I adore side 1 and can play it all the way through anytime, but all direction goes on the second. A great shame. Losing Hackett was always a bigger loss than Gabriel - no doubt. He must still be miffed that 'Inside & Out' was not put on 'Wind & Wuthering'. A true gem. Oh... the what if's..?
Great performance. One of Genesis' best pop songs. Although the transition from prog to pop probably started with 'Trick', it wasn't until Duke where they successfully mastered writing pop songs and finally were getting the financial success they so deserved. Duke was an incredible album and the tour was equally as incredible. Brilliant!
wow they really tore it up here. phil getting behind the drums was awesome, it REALLY gave the song an interesting feel. i liked it. that was great, thanks for posting this. :) this band makes me so happy.
I definately agree the music of the Gabriel/Hackett-era is mostly unknown for most of the younger Genesis-fans, but I strongly disagree on the mainstream opinion that "Genesis wasn't Genesis anymore when Gabriel and Hackett left". Personally I feel the same about both the Collins- and Gabriel/Hackett-eras: Different, but equally brilliant music!
All live-material on this DVD-set is GREAT, so everyone should definately get themselves a copy and see what the blokes did in their early years!
I'm one of those 'younger' fans who grew up with the 3-piece era of Genesis, but am not unfamiliar with early Genesis. Although I lean more to the 76-92 era w/ PC, I love a lot of their early music as well, especially Tony's songs and Supper's Ready. They were a great band from beginning to end with the exception of CAS, which IMO was terrible. Love both PC's and PG's solo work and there isn't a Genesis, PC or PG album or video I don't own.
Once The Knife... The Fountain of Salamcis...Foxtrot ..Nursery Crime..Wind and Wuthering,..I Pass a lot .. then Duke.. And then they were 3 ...ABACAB...and when you neary left the sound they stood up : TURN IT ON AGAIN!
ALIVE WITH YOUR LIFE in this neverending rock and roll spindle!! You buy a SAAB for life you have genesis in your blood all the same!LIVEMUSIC!Bernard
love that bit at the start bass- dom dom dom dom dom, keys/guitar - da da da daaa daaa da / da da da daaa daaa daaa daaa band DADA. Thats it just sing along. great track one of the best theres so many.
the concert is available as a single DVD "Genesis - In London". I bought it for a ridiculous 4.99EUR in a german "Zweitausendeins" store. lol, what a bargain! only two flaws: 1. mono audio, 2. "say it's allright joe" is quite boring ;)
This is a pretty sweet performance of Turn It On Again. Certainly different seeing Phil sing it with a full beard AND a Hawaiian! Thanks for putting it up.
I think Firth of Fifth is their best, probably my fav song of all time BUT carpet cralwers is the one at genesis lie when you go "Oh my god they're not...oh my god they are" know what i mean like ree chee?
"Firth of Fifth" is my favourite Genesis song too. I know what you mean and I agree. But there are other tracks like that as well. I do quite like "Carpet Crawlers" but I prefer songs such as "I Know What I Like (In Your Wardrobe)", "Entangled" and "The Battle of Epping Forest".
Duke actually has a lot of progressive elements to it, though not as trippy as the "early" Genesis; I consider "Behind The Lines" (the intro), "Cul-de-sac", and of course "Duke's Travels / Duke's End" like prog-rock. IMHO it's the best album the guys made as a trio.
i don't agree on reo speedwagon, but concerning genesis there's some truth in this. when I get asked which band I thought was the best of all, many come to mind - van halen, tribal tech, mahavishnu orchestra, ohm, motorhead, ... but ultimately, after some thinking, only genesis remains. lol :)
hey guys please welcome my cover!
