  • Is this Beatles? Haha

  • I like Jars of Clay but I think this version is the worst thing they have done. The style has no corellation to the lyrics!!!

  • @88drbill I've uploaded two other versions of this hymn for those who prefer the traditional style.

  • @88drbill YOU MUST NOT BE A BAPTIST. THOSE CHURCH SUNDAYS ARE BORING. JUST KEEPIN' IT REAL AS THE ROOTS BAPTIST CHURCHES RAISED US UP AS. And, it feels right................................yeah

  • @iceJM2007 come on, smile! LOL

  • a great song performed with very good new way, Jesus is the Lord!!!!!!!!!!

  • @samuelthebeatles Yes, He is! Thank you for commenting.

  • I love this version of the song! It's actually my favorite right now. I don't think that Jars of Clay were trying, in any way, to disrespect anything or anyone!

  • @tjtriangle Thank you for commenting. I believe you're right about Jars of Clay.

  • it is well with my soul !well i hope so!the devil is very convincing

  • @amazingcna20 God is stronger. He always has been and always will be.

  • I will vote this song up! Is good! 8)

  • @poptilludrop200 Thanks!

  • I love the way this sounds :) especially that blend of voices...its absolutely BEAUTIFUL!!! im listening to it again, i dont normally listen to the same song twice ina row xD

  • @omeglefan1 I'm so glad you like it. Thanks for commenting. : )

  • BEATLESQUE

I don't like the Beatles, but I do like the spin.

  • @PrettyNUse777 Thanks for commenting.

  • this song is Sooooooooooooooooo LEGIT!!!! XD

  • @racenuke I hope that's a good thing! : )

  • Cool amen thank you fir posting this

  • @Menyhard1 You're welcome.

  • Why do we have to sing the old songs the same way all the time. We can't change things up and some with it to.there is nothing wroung with that.and don't we have to reach the lost too.g

  • @Menyhard1 Some of us really like the hymns the way we heard them as children. My prayer is that this will find an audience for those who weren't raised on hymns like I was. I have uploaded a traditional version of the hymn as well.

  • God loves variety and so do I.

  • @peltpelt1 Thanks for commenting! : )

  • I really like this rendition of an old gospel favorite. Thanks, Jars of Clay, for a really fun version. I love singing 4-part harmony to the traditional arrangement but this one is really refreshing.

  • @Merhyl1 Thank you for commenting!

  • I am actually quite disgusted at this. "It Is Well" should not be made to sound like a Beatles song that you would cruise in your convertible playing over the radio. This hymn has always been one that you have heard played at funerals or at very tough times in one's life. The man that wrote the hymn wrote it during a tough time in his life after having lost his wife and four daughters in an accident.

I commend JoC for playing hymns but please do it respectfully.

  • @SamPatriot Others have had the same opinion. I've also uploaded a traditional version of the hymn.

  • sounds like the beatles!

  • At first I thought this sounded like a sitcom theme song (like "Friends of Jesus" or something). But the more I listened to it, the more I like it. I prefer to sing the traditional version myself, but this is a very pleasant, upbeat version. Thanks for posting it.

  • @jake111127 You're welcome!

  • Eh..

Great song. It's one of my favorite hymns, but this version sounds like the Beach Boys.

  • @Berthopinstien Most people say the Beatles. : ) I've uploaded a traditional version of the hymn as well.

  • thanks for posting this!!! i enjoy it!!!

  • @MrAanenson You're welcome!

  • Yuck!

  • @tedwilsonjr I've uploaded a traditional version of the hymn for those who prefer it.

  • i already said. this version doesnt portay the emotions that he went through. thats it. also i dont like nasal singing

  • look up it is well by Kutless they done the awesomest job on that song

  • this... is... soooo cool!!! i love it!

  • @MrJosephMopar Thanks!

  • If the Beatles were Christian this is how it wouldve been done LOVE IT!!!!!

  • @Unexpectthem Thanks!

  • @Unexpectthem i agree 10 times

  • I don't like this at all. how does this express the sorrow that the writer was feeling when he wrote these words? this melody sounds like it should be talking about "going to the movies with my new girl". why mess with perfection?

  • @unearthlydwarf I have uploaded a traditional version of this hymn as well. Thank you for commenting.

  • @unearthlydwarf. You must not have understood Horatio Spafford then. No matter how much he grieved. He trusted in the lord. read Psalms 118 verse 24-This is the day which the LORD hath made; we will rejoice and be glad in it.

  • @calmmah No you don't understand me. The song was written to show that he had a REALLY bad event happen. but THEN he realized that it's okay because of his faith in God. There's nothing wrong with expressing your sorrow. I find it to be WAY more effective. that is all. This version doesn't speak anything to me. it just sounds like another lousy pop song.

  • @unearthlydwarf I couldn't agree more.

  • @unearthlydwarf I don't understand your comment at all honestly. Though the author, Horatio Spafford suffered a great deal of loss and sorrow within his life, he went on to travel to Jerusalem and do wonders. He writes somewhat about his sorrow & loss, but in the end says "Whatever my lot, Thou hast taught me to say, It is well, it is well, with my soul". IMO that's a statement of acceptance and rejoice in knowing those he has lost now enjoy eternal paradise and thus he is "well" with it.

  • I love this. Thank you Jesus for your blood. It is well with my soul! Praise the Lord praise the Lord oh my soul!!

  • @jazzinpalmy Amen!

  • @juliehucks That's great! Thanks for commenting.

  • LOVE IT!

  • @SuperRevelations Thanks!

  • Personally, I love this version! I that, while the original is quite moving, this shows that we are to do everything with a happy heart. Even though times are hard, "It is well with my soul!" Sometimes it can be moving and you need that time of serious reflection, but there are other times when we have the blessing to laugh and dance in the face of our tough times!! Both versions of the song illustrates that quite nicely!! :)

  • @ITSBEKAH Thank you! Well said!

  • @ITSBEKAH yes! you're right

  • Treatment doesn't match the subject and tone of the lyrics. Oh well.

  • @Sojourneer I have uploaded a traditional version of the hymn as well.

  • There might not be anything wrong with making a song contemporary, but it just can't compare to the emotional power of the original hymn. That's all I'm sayin. And I'm not some fourty year old woman, I'm fifteen. And I like Jars of Clay. :)

  • @saltwaterloveee I'm glad you're appreciating the hymns of the church at such a young age. I've also uploaded a traditional version of this hymn.

  • @beanscot i'll check it out :)

  • Praise God :) I LOve this :)

  • @fearea Thanks!

  • I've been looking for, and just may have to make myself, Dwight Yoakam's version. very traditional and classy. Love the Jars!

  • I love this!!! I doesn't do the goosebumps thing that singing it the old traditional way does to me... but it is sooooo much fun. Jars of clay really are so gifted.

  • @christyevaH Yes, they are. Thanks for commenting!

  • I love this version. It makes me want to rejoice in dancing and singing!

  • @cjhins I know what you mean! Thanks for the comment! : )

  • I think this version sucks all the feeling out of the lyrics...I prefer the traditional version.

It almost sounds like the Greatful Dead.

  • @micahalb I've also posted a traditional version of the hymn. Actually, grateful dead is not a bad way to describe a Christian. Once dead in our sins, we have been made alive in Christ! For this, I am deeply grateful.

  • @micahalb Hey....I love Grateful Dead! :p

  • We sang this at my Grandmothers funeral. We sang it at whenever I went to church with her and my grandfather. Even though it makes me cry to hear this I know she is in a better place. They are tears of joy and this song reminds us God is guiding and guarding us and when it is our time or the one we love's time just remember God is watching over them and us.

    God Bless all of you.

  • @annaleemarie1997 May God bless you as well. Praise God for the sweet assurance that we will see our precious loved ones again. Christ arose and conquered the grave!

  • I wish we would all shout "And Lord, SHALL decend"

  • @bandboy10 That will be a glorious day!

  • I agree with the comments about contemporary sound for old hymns. I am 56 and was in need of comfort in my soul. Jars of Clay and their rendition of It Is Well With My Soul was able to get me through a really rough patch.

  • @SneddyGirl Thanks for sharing your story. God bless.

  • I LOVE THIS SONG! Praise God for his blessings to us! the ability to praise him by songs!

  • @televisionpros Amen!

  • we sing this song in our church every second service

  • Great! Thanks for sharing!

  • The Bible says to make a Joyful Noise. He never speified the that the melody or tune had to be this way or another...only JOYFUL

Psalm 81:1 Sing aloud unto God our strength: make a joyful noise unto the God of Jacob.

Psalm 95:1 O come, let us sing unto the LORD: let us make a joyful noise to the rock of our salvation.

Psalm 98:4 Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all the earth: make a loud noise, and rejoice, and siing praise

Psalm 100:1 Make a joyful noise unto the LORD, all ye lands.

  • I'm sure our God in heaven in all of his glory smiled upon Jars of Clay when they covered this song. Definitely one of my favorites!

  • Thanks! : )

  • Why do people think it's bad to make old hymns with a contemporary sound? I mean, when these songs first were written they would have been considered contemporary for their day, so if it's bad to have contemporary worship today, wouldn't that mean these songs were bad in the past?

There's nothing wrong with having a contemporary sound. If a song can edify believers and honor and praise God, then what difference does it make if the instruments are an organ or an electric guitar?

  • I believe the songs we heard when we first found Jesus, sound the sweetest to our souls. I did upload a traditional rendering of this hymn for those who prefer it. It is by Lindsy Morton, and it can be found under beanscot, should anyone want to listen. Thanks for your comment! God's desire is for us to be well with our souls!

  • @DreamstoneX I don't think it is bad. I just don't like it, because it is not the familiar melody that I associate with those lyrics. Since it helps others express their testimony as a believer in Christ and to worship, it is good.

  • @DreamstoneX I see nothing wrong with it. Times change with every generation and we must grow and adapt the old message to their understanding. I was raised a Methodist, but rejected that "tradition" and am now a Nazarene. We play contempary christian music every Sunday evening in our youth services. John Wesley's many hymn's that are considered nowadays to be old traditions started out as simple lyrical rearrangments of old British bar songs, which everyone knew well. He just changed the words.

  • @DreamstoneX TOTALLY AGREE WITH YOU!!!

  • @DreamstoneX Beatles are hardly contemporary. Its a cool sound but i like Acapellas rendition much better!

  • Yeah, I'm just not a fan of the style applied here. It's like telling the story of Christ's crucifiction and putting it to the tune of Alexander's Piano Rag. Usually the melody compliments the lyrics. That's not the case here. The melody distracts from the level of sincerity of the song. It is no longer about a man pouring out his heart to his God.

  • below comments to fewkster

  • For all who disapprove, you should go home and really listen to what your kids listen to. Is this so bad? Listen to the words!

  • I did upload a more traditional version of this wonderful hymn on my channel. My hope is for the hymn to be appreciated in whatever style it is sung. There is room for us all at His table.

  • It's like the Beatles singing a hymn....love it!

  • Great! : )

  • Couldn't agree more! HUGE fan of the Beatles - why couldn't they have used their talents to praise the Lord? Now you got me thinking of all the amazing hymns they COULD have sung!.....

    Imagine "And Can It Be"?....

  • @zoonsgirl I thought that it was Beatles-esque when I heard it too!

  • @zoonsgirl

    THATS WHAT I THOUGHT!!

  • @zoonsgirl - EXACTLY!! never thought of this song in this way. It is actually quite uplifting!!

  • Love the remake of this song. Remove your blinders and enjoy what GOD has to say through the song

  • Hmmm...I wonder what the music was like that David danced to when they brought the Ark into Jerusalem???

Be careful brother that your judgement of others does not bring barrenness to your soul.

Yes, we need to be discerning about what music we listen to. If the music is so loud you can't hear the words, or If the words are so insipid that they do not challenge, I would question if it is of God. But even an old dog like me (I'm 58) can still rejoice in a new song of WORSHIP (Ps.33:3; Mt. 13:52)

  • It is not a matter of sin of course, but I love the original tune much better. Hard to improve on it. This tune just doesn't do the words justice--my opinion.

  • That's fine. You're not alone with your opinion. : )

  • We Christians have got to quit playing make believe & realize that the music itself "speaks & compels" & not just the words. If you took out the vocals of many contemporary "Christian" songs & just played the instruments you could play it at any party the world may be having where sinful acts are running rampant & it would do absolutely nothing to inhibit it. In fact it would be a great aid in encouraging such sins. Aren't we kidding ourselves when we choose to believe otherwise?

  • Are you saying that this song encourages sin if played in a certain manner? >:3

  • I don't know how popular this particular style would be at gatherings of most young people today. However, yes, if you took out the vocals and just played that music at gatherings of non-Christians that came up in the 60s, I believe it would be one of the "lubes" to make a slippery slope into sinful acts. I believe at least it would do nothing to deter it. In heaven, can u imagine more Gabriel swaying to this before God or bowng before Him w/ something like the Hallelujah Chorus being played?

  • Is the Hallelujah chorus anything like the old Hebrew psalms? That's the original stuff. I have to agree with Simple on this, God appreaciates anything that praises His name no matter what.

  • I can't go so far as to judge people's motives, etc. so I will leave that judgment with God where it rightfully belongs, but can you honestly say you can imagine hearing this kind of music in heaven around God's throne? The beat & the vocals sound like they came right out of the 1960's pop culture. I wish these contemporary "artists" would make up their own tunes & LYRICS and quit butchering the old hymns of the faith while @ the same time blurring the lines between the church & the world.

  • John 14: 34-35 34A new commandment I give unto you, That ye love one another; as I have loved you, that ye also love one another. 35By this shall all men know that ye are my disciples, if ye have love one to another.

  • I'm not saying I hate or even dislike the actual members of these bands, I just think they are at best misguided. I absolutely agree with the verses you posted. We have to do comparative interpretation with Scripture though & see what the whole has to say. I might also quote to you 1 John 2:15--"Love not the world, neither the things that are in the world. If any man love the world, the love of the Father is not in him."

  • The love of the Father is in me, dear brother. I don't think we siblings, children of God, should fight in a public forum. We should be letting the light of the Savior shine in the darkness and do nothing that might dim the light for others.

  • I can appreciate that. I can tell you seem to be a nice, kind person. My apologies if I was offensive in any way. God bless.

  • This is the sort of music that spreads the word of our saviour to the young people of the world who do not know the love of god. And do you really think that any man made music is really worthy of god.you have no idea what perfect music the angels sing to god. you are limited by your own personal tastes in music in your idea of what god listens. God rejoices in any who praise the lord and if they rap then that is their expression of their faith. worship is your own personal engagement with god.

  • @cptuohy AMEN!!!! Why do we try to limit the way people praise God? We all fall short, when compared to the Glory of God!

    Blessings to you

  • You worship using traditional hymns, others prefer a more upbeat proclamation of their faith. that is their choice and it is not for you to judge them.

  • you're welcome!

  • This song is such an awesome song! :D God really is Great and His love is so true and so strong.. I really got so touched yesterday when it was sung in our church.. :) Oh btw can I ask where I could download this Jars of Clay version? Aside from Limewire... Thanks! :)

  • I purchased it from Itunes. I'm not familiar with Limewire. Thanks for commenting!

  • this ong brings me really close with HIM it does my soul well .......

  • That is so good! Thank you for commenting.

  • Sounds good, but nothing will ever be better and more touching than the original.

  • Thanks for your comment. Many are in agreement with you.

  • Horatio went thru soo much like all five of his children dying nd losing all his investments yet he still wrote this song

  • Yes, he exhibited a tremendous faith.

  • yep its incredible if u think bout it

  • omg i love this song

  • Our God is good.

  • Jars of Clay are such a good group of talented musicians. Their message is as timeless as the Bible. They always play such fine music and songs with a special message in each one.

  • Thanks for your comment!

  • Wouldn't go quite as far as saying their message is 'as timeless as the Bible', mind you. :)

  • I meant to say their music is inspired by the bible and our Lord. Thank you for the correction.

  • :D

    Just checking

  • For those of you listening to this that can judge the "style" more than the "worship" it leads one into, you may want to look up the terms "legalism"; "pharisaism"; "dogma" and many others that represent what Jesus Himself refered to as "stiff-necked" people. You may also want to look up Romans 12:1-2. Your traditions are sending people to hell because you are more concerned with what grandma and grandpa found acceptable than what God finds acceptable! Have a blessed day - Pastor B. Reid

  • hello jcolino3,

there is no place in scripture telling us how we ought to worship. Worship has never been about what is played, or how it sounds, but about the condition of the heart, that it is in praise, thanksgiving, and glorification of the Most High who alone is worthy. Don't be stuck in your ways just because you don't like the style, there is no biblical basis. You have a preference, that doesn't mean that the Lord does. We are in not of the world , to glorify our LORD and Savior.

  • actually in psalms it says to praise him with many MANY instruments including the "strange" ones

  • My favorite hymn...one of my favorite versions. I like it done old style too. I LOVE singing it in church. It says so much...beautiful

  • Thanks for commenting. It's a wonderful hymn about a wonderful God.

  • If indeed, the Beatles "influenced" this song then praise God. Maybe a Beatles fan will hear it and decide to give his or her heart to our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

  • Thanks for the comment. God will use what He will use to accomplish his will.

  • Thank you for posting this , this is acually a song I wanted played at my funeral or memorial , I think I will want this version now that I have heard it !!

  • I'm glad you like it. It would make a wonderful testimony of a life lived for God. Thanks for commenting!

  • Consider this quote when you consider a Christian song in the style of the Beatles... "Christianity will go. It will vanish and shrink. I needn't argue with that; I'm right and I will be proved right. We're more popular than Jesus now." -- John Lennon. I share the struggles of such a soulful-tearful song sung in the style of a group who encouraged all sorts of sin and vice and anti-Christian feelings. What next? A death metal version?

  • There is life in a look at the crucified One;

    There is life at this moment for thee;

Then look, sinner, look unto Him and be saved —

Unto Him who was nailed to the tree.

There is life in a look at the crucified One:

There is life at this moment for thee:

Then look, sinner — look unto Him and be saved,

And know thyself spotless as He.

  • Consider please that the members of the group, Jars of Clay, are all Believers in Jesus Christ, children of the same Heavenly Father. I would not want to judge what was in their hearts when they recorded this song. In the same way I wouldn't want to be judged if I were say singing this hymn in church while reflecting on what I'd be eating for lunch later. Only God knows our hearts and He alone can discern the intent of what is offered up as worship to Him. Sing praise to God!

  • I'm not suggesting that anyone is or isn't saved. I am suggesting (imho) that the saved are called to be separated from this world, and its influences. This Beatles rendition appears to be somewhere between a slippery slope and a headlong dive into sounding like the world.

  • This one confuses me...as a both a Methodist and a Musician. :/

  • I'm not a Methodist or a musician, but I know others have struggled with the Beatles sounding adaption of this hymn.

  • Well, what I actually meant was that the authors of this hymn would have thought this was being unfaithful to their original intent, but I find that much of the sentiment is still there.

See, Mr. Spafford's life could be compared to Lot, in many ways. He lost his only son, then the Great Chicago Fire broke him financially. He sent his wife and four remaining daughters ahead on a voyage, the boat sank and he lost all but his wife.

This is a poem written about sorrow and joy.

    God Bless.

  • It truly is a testament to his faith that even with all of his sorrow, it was still well with his soul. Thanks for your thoughtful comment.

  • It is a testimony to the faith of the Lord, too, brother.

  • So true! Blessings, Sister beanscot : )

  • Oops!! Sorry, Ma'am.

God Bless our laymen...err, laywomen. ;)

  • haha...praise God, i like this fast beat interpretation...i like it really...GBU

  • I'm glad! Thanks for the comment!

  • Wow I don't like this one at all. lol

  • I'm not sure how to respond. But thanks for the comment!

  • No offence, I love the song and its a nice vid. I just mean I don't care for the version. That being said I do like Jars of Clay.

  • Thanks for clarifying! : )

  • yeah they made a more upbeat tune out of it... i like it... but I love the Audio Adrenaline version more,,.. try to listen to it... :D... all this contemporary version of the hymn made me love the old hymn... im gonna be singing it!

  • Soon Thou wilt come again,

    Jesus, our Lord!

    We shall be happy then,

    Jesus, our Lord!

Then we Thy face shall see,

Then we shall like Thee be,

    Then evermore with Thee,

    Jesus, our Lord!

  • i love this song it is my Bible class' song we sing it every day!

  • I'm glad! Thanks for commenting!

  • Man I just love this version of the song, Praise the Lord!

  • Love this song, and this version!

  • That's great! : )

  • This is a great re-doodling

  • iu love this song

  • thanks for posting this vid beanscot! i am ''new'' to church again after a long self exile. i am constantly urged to share my testimony with song, and this seems so perfect. it makes me feel happy. somethig upbeat to counter the mundane. god bless.

  • You're very welcome! I think Horatio Spafford, the hymn writer, would have thrilled to know that his hymn reflected the joy that can be found in Christ, our Savior!

  • This kind of sounds like a Beatles (early on in their career) version of the song, no? Especially with the guitar riffs and harmonies. Kinda cool.
