From what I've read, Anderson is gay but he doesn't talk about it because he wants to focus on being an unbiased journalist. While I admire that devotion to his job, I kinda wish he'd come out, but I completely understand why he doesn't. He doesn't want his next 400 TV appearances to be people talking to him about being gay. He wants to keep reporting on what he wants to report on. As an activist, I'm kind of surprised how okay with that I am.

What happened here is that Howard fucked up. He accidentally outed Anderson. Yes, everyone already knows, but it's another thing for Howard to announce it as fact on his show. It's something that could get him into trouble not just with Anderson, but also with the gay community, with whom Howard sympathizes greatly. Then, once Howard realized that Anderson has never come out of the closet, he stumbled a little trying to backtrack and then finally changed the subject.
