Man, that's some final exam that Shaolin temple has. Grasshopper probably thought he was home free when he snatched the pebble, but then there was just one more thing he had to do. At least there was snow on the ground for him to collapse into and cool off those forearms.
4 years old watching this show when it first came out, I never truly understood anything that was going on, all I know is he was kicking ass everywhere he went with a soft spoken touch and it was cool. Now here I am in my thirties and studied Shaolin history, only NOW does that show make sense completely. Talk about a lifetime of understanding something, geeez.
i just watched this clip as that young boy at home living with my parents... hardwood living room floor... sitting crossedlegs and plopped right in front the 1960 something television enjoying this one... i see now the camera work and angles shot for that.. makes it today work as well it did for my young imagination of that time...wow...! hey.... LOL... be honest...... how many of you have found something about the home back in the day..mimick that tattoo branding scene ... LOL...lol...

I'm glad Bruce Lee didn't get this role even though this was his idea because there's no way he could've played a little pussy like David Caradine did on the show.. Bruce was a bad motherfucker and playing a pussy would've messed up his career. Things happen for a reason and they gave it to a white man instead. That was the right choice in my opinion.
I agree that Kane was supposed to be a peaceful person and Bruce Lee would have never pulled that off.Had the show been about a kick ass fighter who was NOT a peaceful person than I think YES Bruce Lee would have been the right choice.
I recall reading that another factor (other than Lee looking too Oriental) in David Carradine getting the role was because he had a more serene demeanour than did Lee, who looked a trifle too fierce. I believe that Lee himself didn't blame the producers for their selection, and said that he'd probably do the same thing, were he to be in their shoes -- and reversing the situation, he'd think twice about casting a Westerner as star of a Hong Kong movie. Still, Lee would have been a great pick.
Bruce Lee did conceive some of the key concepts for the show but they wanted the character to be half-American so as to be accepted by the audience thus Bruce Lee was shown the door. However, seeing how David Carradine played the role, I think Bruce Lee, given his natural intensity, would not have made the character humble enough or have that mystical quality. In short, Carradine's portrayal was more memorable.
there was always a lesson to learn from master Po..........Old Man.....how is it you can hear these things.........Young Man .....how is it that you DO NOT............classic
This show was a good show, but they missed out on a lot by not allowing Bruce Lee to star in the show. Think if Bruce Lee had been in the lead role, with all that he that he was capable of, this would have been a very big show at the time. But, at any rate, Bruce Lee saw the silver screen as his ticket to fame and fortune, and churned out some of the best martial arts movies that have ever been made! So, kinda glad that he didn't get the role for this show:)
@holymotherofgod i agree with your perfectly chosen words, indeed this series of kung fu had a big impact on our child hood days.

I would watch this show when I was a kid, then when it was over, I would go outside with my little brother and kick the shit out of him with Kung Fu......
I was only three when this series started, but I remember the wise teacher and the blind man. I understood why he had to leave and wanted him to work out his problems. I understood the outline even at that early age. And boy did that bo
I actually think 70's tv was as good as 60's tv. Not the same thing dressed up different as people liken to music. The thing about Bruce Lee was that apart from his unique mental and physical skills was that he was also an actor and to people like James Coburn a guru/mentor. Would he have really wanted this role? The fact that Kung Fu was not full-on in your face action made it enjoyable. Who wants to see someones stunt double every 5 seconds. Terrific series as were many US tv shows/series
If you ever studied Taoism and Buddhism deeply then you would understand that Bruce Lee was not right for this part. He was from the "external" school almost entirely (though he did a little reading up on the philosophy of ancient martial arts in his later years). Carradine, though quite the idiot in real life, was stellar in this role (perhaps unbeknownst to himself).
Is sad that Bruce Lee did not get the role because of the perceptions back then. However, I do agree with you, if Bruce was the main character then the show would had been more like the green hornet. It would had been a very different show. Another thing thing is that a chinece man in the old west kicking white men butt well, he would not last past a few episodes. They would hang him. A white men however could walk around town with less trouble, historically speaking.
I remember when the show went off the air, and 'Ol David was busted for breaking and entering and tried to use kung fu on the cops!! you know the samething happend to Ronald McDonald, less the kung fu!!
I seem to remember an old 70s 7-up commercial based on the KUNG FU TV series where the monk asks the novice: "Cola nut or UN-cola nut? Can YOU choose wisely?" :D Anybody got that piece of trivia around?
I agree. I like Steve Vai, but I couldn't help check that... So I searched for a video of this series and I found this one and your comment too!
Melodies are similar, not equal (I think). So, let's say that Steve Vai got inspired on the Kung-Fu song, but not copied it... Ha ha! ( sorry for my English ;) )
ZIPPTPH77 said: "Bruce Lee was supposed to get this role, but he was too Oriental looking they said and would turn off the viewers..." It wouldn't surprise me at all if this was true, but take care to put the blame where it belongs. If you have the pleasure of watching the Time Warner release of all episodes on DVD all seasons with talking oints from David Carradine you will see and hear what he has to say about the casting.
Yes Bruce was originally cast but the show was to be about Japanese not Chinese. Davids family and father was very well known...also, back in those days, not due to anyones falt, it just wasn't acceptable, now it is so do we keep beating up on ourselves...what about the American Indians?
Do they live in their own club some of the time..? But you have to hand it to them when they get it right. And the effects, scenes, costumes and sets are the best in the world. You can't often knock the acting and if anywhere else is as good, why aren't they on the silver screen more often?
@dadunham Not saying anything at all bad about Bruce Lee, but i think David Carradine was PERFECT for the role. His acting skills were (and still are!!) formidable, and to my mind he always managed to keep the proper aura of mystery around the character of Kane - it was like, "Who was that unmasked man?" He was like the Lone Ranger, but without a gun, and Kung Fu was a big part of some of the BEST TV moments of my childhood. Maybe Bruce Lee could have done it better... but somehow i doubt it!
Great Show. About the adventures of a Buddhist Monk travelling through America's Old West. With each show we learn a little bit of Buddhist wisdom and of life's lessons. I am sure this must have been many people's first introduction to Buddhism. Simply Brilliant TV.

Great Show. About the adventures of a Buddhist Monk travelling through America's Old West. With each show we learn a little bit of Buddhist wisdom and of life's lessons. I am sure this must have been many people's first introduction to Buddhism. Simply Brilliant TV.
