John Romano has just about the most perfect and accurate defense in the use of steroids! the man is a genius, simply because he says it EXACTLY like it is! why arent we focusing on the REAL health risks like smoking and alcohol abuse?? those two alone are much more dangerous AND have had much more PROVEN side effects and deaths in a single year than steroids have ever had in an entire lifetime?!! call it what you will, but just listen to one single interview with Romano...end of story.......
If so many doctors are against steroids and deem them so unhealthy, why is it that many will prescribe either testosterone injections, patches, or gels to raise low testosterone? It's called TRT, lots of people are on it.
Didn't Bill O'Reilly say something about the possibility of a steroids-go league in which the sports fields are larger, bats and other equipment are heavier, etc?
At any rate let the leagues police themselves. They actually have a vested interest in running a fair game unlike government officials appointed by politicians who tackle too many issues at once.
Well, baseball is a business. I'm sure John Stossel has no problem with McDonalds making their employees wear uniforms, so why can't MLB refuse to let in players who take performance-enhancing drugs? As for the govt's role; that is another issue. Although plenty of adolescent athletes take steroids because of pressure to succeed. How do you prevent that?
@gvenema Depth perception is everything in golf. His body will swing the ball to where his brain decides it needs to be, something that his eyes will determine. Try this little experiment. @M1thotyn Actually, he makes a good point. That's exactly what sport is. Why is home plate 60 feet 6 inches from the mound? Why not let the pitcher pitch from anywhere, including behind the umpire? Why not let the runner on first decide he is safe as long he shouts "Ollie ollie oxen free?"

ok Im all good with that but baseball should ban steroids. If they don't then players who don't want to use and hurt their long term health or grow boobies will be at disadvantage to the players who don't care and use
we let em smoke. we let em drink. we let people screw without condoms. we let people girls get on maury sayin one of those four dudes may be the father.
John, buddy, you're reasonable. But, this isn't a reasonable country. We are ruled by emotion and fear and all that other stuff.
Private groups like the NFL and NBA can police themselves better than the government. I can see why they might want to have a policy of limited or no steroid use, but it ought to be the choice of the organization and/or individual.
@YesWeCantaloupe nope...hard work and dedication and genetics got him where he is...steroids just helped him a tiny bit...he would be there even without them..
@Marcheret your at it again i see. You are really fucking stupid. You have got to be kidding me calling Stossel a globalist. You are a dumb piece of shit. You must think Karl Marx is a Libertarian too don't you? Bitch.
Legalize roids.. the people that are saying they are so bad have never taken them.. but the people that have love them.. and they make u feel good and young again..
but then the govt wouldnt be making billions of dollors per year on ciggerette tax and alcohol tax lol synthetic testosterone being illegal is just mind boggling . Cigs which are PROVEN to kill people ok fine but synthetic testosterone nooooooooooo
This part of his feature is almost word for word, clip by clip plagiarized off the documentary Bigger, Stronger, Faster. I wonder if he acknowledged that fact in the show somewhere.
Fuck I never knew steroids were illegal I thought they were just banned from professional sports leagues.
I have the same reaction I had when I learned prostitution was illegal. I'm racking my brain for a good reason why, and I can only come up with weak excuses.
hey i did a little fact checking and found out that the very first instance of the light bulb WAS invented by an Englishman named Humphrey Davy, but the method was extremely impractical and VERY different from the light bulb that Edison invented and the one that you and I know today. That being said, I think your strongest argument here is the educational status quo between the US and other countries. Up until i read these comments, i too fell victim to an American public education.
Sounds like you've never actually read a textbook. That's so sad. You allow us our freedom? Oh dear God. Do you even have a library card? You protect us from what? No country in the world has a problem with us. Maybe because we don't go to war with the wrong places just to get our jollies. I suggest you look up a video titled "Bill Maher - New Rules: America Isn't #1" This is from a guy who loves his country, but has a reasonable view of it.
The best your American public school education can do is "faggot"? Really? No Thomas Edison didn't INVENT the lightbulb, and no the Wright Brothers didn't INVENT the airplane. This is something that even a mentally challenged 5 year old could have explained to them with a very basic textbook.
No seriously do your homework on those inventions. Apparently all you can do is namecalling. More typical American behavior. You Americans are awfully scared of doing research.
Wow, I guess I touched a nerve. If you believe many of those interventions are exclusively American inventions then you are clearly a victim of public school.
Myself I take steroids and HGH and go to a doctor evey month for a check up. But I got no problems at all. Actually I feel more confident and healther.
There not shrunk my friend.Trust me i feel more better when I'm taking steroids. I go see a doctor every month to get a check up to see if there's any damage. I'm taking them intelligentely.
"He has to use words like "associated"". Does Stossel not understand what that word means? It's not the same as "supposed" or "alleged". Stossel is yet another American idiot.
Such a true view...if people knew the truth, its just like anything else, everyone has an opinion, and most dont research a thing on their own, so without any information backing their need to comment, they follow the trend, and most of the time its b.s.
i agree you shouldnt go to jail for it, or be prosecuted. But i think it should be kept out of the professional sports business. I mean, john said nothing about your dick shrinking. And to compete if 90% are taking roids, then probably others would feel like they need to, to catch up. What if they dont want to shrink their dicks, or what if they just dont feel like taking hormones from other animals is their cup of tea?
i mean sure let those who dont compete take as much as they want.
I don't know. I think that baseball should outlaw steroids either way, but I guess that's because I play baseball and I'm deathly afraid of them. Not that I'm that good, but still, it makes it more real. :p
I'm not saying steroids should be illegal, but MLB should keep them banned.
@tribulu i'm not sure i would use that argument if i only had one point to make. they might come back and say "well then how would you determine where to draw the line."
I believe they should be legal, but I would argue that consenting adults have the right to choose for themselves what they do with their own bodies. If all athletes are allowed to do it then it's on the table they have to make the choice about how good they really want to be it's a trade off decision they have to makethemselves
@jubeikiba6 I would draw the line at the upper level of what is considered normal. If normal testosterone in men is in a range of 300-800, whats wrong with taking a person's whos output is 300 and correcting it to 800? Then they can compete on skills and desire. If my pancreas wasn't pumping insulin adequately it wouldn't be cheating to take insulin.
This comment has received too many negative votesshow
Stossel is often right but when he's wrong he's embarrassingly wrong. The limits of libertarianism are obvious. To argue that people should pay for their rescue service is simply barbaric. To say that over-population is not a problem when it is THE problem of the modern world is simply irresponsible. And this little vignette on steroids based on what a University athletic doc. says can only come from a man who's never been a serious athlete.
1) Why is that barbaric? If you take unnecessary risks, and have the money too pay for the resources used to rescue you, why should taxpayers be forced to pay your bill? It's not "barbaric" it's logical.
2)Over population is a major issue. And cutting off welfare benefits and letting markets work is the best way for population growth to reach an equilibrium without the government putting a gun to anybodies head.
3) If I want to use steroids, or an athlete wants to take steroids, and the sports league he works for doesn't have a problem with it, that's none of the governments business, nor is it yours, comrade.
Why shouldn't people who take unnecessary risks pay for their own rescue? What's barbaric about personal responsibility? If you want to go cliff diving and your parachute gets snagged on an outcropping, why the hell should anyone else pay to get you out of the predicament you got yourself into just because you wanted a cheap thrill? I also don't understand your point about the world's population. What exactly is THE problem about which you speak?
abuse in the first place is wrong and even then only 5 out of 100 steroid users experience uncontroled aggression and those are the people that were assholes or had a bad attitude to begin with. And certain people use them with the intention to become more dangerous than they already are e.g. criminals/rapists/murderers.
There's also a big difference between careless use (abuse) & intelligent use preferably under a physicians guidance. In the end it all comes down to ones personality.
If a person take them and experience mood swings or uncontroled aggression or whichever sideeffect it may be then the problem lies with that individual. It's a sign that his/her body can't handle the change in the chemical balance that has been forced upon it by the steroids.
There is no safe drug that ever exist, theres always a benefit to risk ratio. Name any medication and X number of people will suffer adverse effects. X number will tolerate them very well.
Here's my opinion on roids...I believe the reason they are illegal is based on government control. Yes the whole uneven playing field thing or whatever, but the fact is they don't want society taking them, getting bigger, and essentially gaining power, beating up cops, people abusing them and more assault, etc.Though my examples may suck i believe the reason is based on control of society and regulating the people to fit a mold.
The reasons they are illegal is basically nothing to do with health risks and almost completely to do with sports. Its all about sports cheating, it is the ultimate reason why they made them a controlled substance. Which to me has got to be the dumbest reason ever to make them illegal to everyone especially since the majority of steroid users are non-athletes(so they can't be cheating in anything) and doing them purely for cosmetic reasons.
The bottom line is that the Founding Fathers setup our government so that, so long as your rights don't interfere with my rights, do what you want. If you wanna ruin your life with drugs and alcohol, that's the Church's job to help you, not government.
Finally! Thanks John Stossel! You have reported on what many of us in the gym who have used steroids have known for years. That is, that steroids are safe when used in moderation, have little to no side effects (of which are fully preventable or treatable) there is no mythical roid rage and are AS is just fine for adult males to use. Its funny to see and hear people commenting on the effects of steroids when they have never used them let alone even been in a gym! Thanks again John!
A lot of people are such sheep! They buy all the hype told to them by the media about "steroids are evil", etc etc and most of them are either not smart enough or are too lazy to do the REAL research and keep their minds open to what the truth realy is....steroids ARE beneficial and helpful when used in moderation, and they do NOT have the overblown catastrophic side effects that the naysayers want you to believe...
Im not so sure about steroids not having really bad effects. But if someone wants to ruin their body for a few good years of performance, I say let them.
why have u used them? have you done any research on the DRUGS yes a drug like everyother drug. i take them and many of my friends do, they are like any other drug yes they have side effects, but none of the crazy side effects these fucking idiot liars talk about, dude wake up and do research about a subject before making a comment, I cant believe someone can still watch this report and still believe the bullshit about steroids, dude your fucking retarded
Jesus fucking christ. Did you even read what I said? Or was that I didnt agree with steroids not being harmful all you heard? ya fuck.
Are you so fucking uncivilized that you couldn't see the bigger underlying point? The conclusion that I said people should be allowed to use them? That because what I said wasn't 100% in step with your view that you had to attack me? For fucks sake.
And you tell me to "do my research" as if there is zero fucking studies or evidence that steroids are bad.
Riddle me this fuck face. Why is YOUR research the correct one? Because it comes to a conclusion that you agree with and want to be true? THAT makes you a disingenuous douche and hurts science.
Haha anyone that believes in a government that attacks it's own country and talks out of it ass on just about everything, need to start thinking for themselves.
I listen to heavy metal....and apparently, according to the powers above- I worship the devil and will at some point shoot up a school full of children, and most certainly go to hell......errrr- no.
I'm just fine, have a job, enjoy my life and have morals and respect for my fellow man.....sorry :)

we are talking about supervising the USE, NOT the potential for abuse!
shit... i could abuse my Ambien to sleep & take 4 more than my Doc prescribes - with no side effects - but i cant ask my doc to -
1 - check if i am physically capable of using them
2 - warn me of side effects
3 - administer the drug under his control, and under his discretion
apparently thats too much to ask for from a DOCTOR???

Private groups like the NFL and NBA can police themselves better than the government. I can see why they might want to have a policy of limited or no steroid use, but it ought to be the choice of the organization and/or individual.

I think steroids are great for athletes who have medical problems or who want to improve their game.
I don't think taking steroids is a form of cheating unless it was a steroid free event.

Arnold took steroids.
As a result, he won competitions.
As a result of that, he stars in Pumping Iron.
As a result, he launched a successful movie career.
As a result of his fame, he won the race for Governor.
Therefore, Arnold taking steroids got him elected Governor.

Hmmm, doesn't sound very American to me.
pete2778 2 years ago
hey i did a little fact checking and found out that the very first instance of the light bulb WAS invented by an Englishman named Humphrey Davy, but the method was extremely impractical and VERY different from the light bulb that Edison invented and the one that you and I know today. That being said, I think your strongest argument here is the educational status quo between the US and other countries. Up until i read these comments, i too fell victim to an American public education.
wachman 2 years ago
Sounds like you've never actually read a textbook. That's so sad. You allow us our freedom? Oh dear God. Do you even have a library card? You protect us from what? No country in the world has a problem with us. Maybe because we don't go to war with the wrong places just to get our jollies. I suggest you look up a video titled "Bill Maher - New Rules: America Isn't #1" This is from a guy who loves his country, but has a reasonable view of it.
Arthur5041975 2 years ago
The best your American public school education can do is "faggot"? Really? No Thomas Edison didn't INVENT the lightbulb, and no the Wright Brothers didn't INVENT the airplane. This is something that even a mentally challenged 5 year old could have explained to them with a very basic textbook.
Arthur5041975 2 years ago
The compact disc=The Netherlands/Japan
The airplane=Britain/France
The lightbulb=Britain
Cybernetics=Greece (yup!)
Not to mention that the other inventions not named had their beginnings tied into many people who were obviously not American.
A simple trip to your library should clear up any confusion.

No really study the origins of those inventions. Get back to me when you stop being wrong.

hollykelly 2 years ago
i agree you shouldnt go to jail for it, or be prosecuted.

The steroid debate is often about what is "fair". What about a guy who naturally has a low output of hormone. Is that "fair"?
tribulu 2 years ago 19
@tribulu life is not fair and it is not suppose to be. Fairness should never be used in any debate. Especially for or against steroid use.
tenaciousj54 1 year ago
@tribulu i'm not sure i would use that argument if i only had one point to make. they might come back and say "well then how would you determine where to draw the line."
I believe they should be legal, but I would argue that consenting adults have the right to choose for themselves what they do with their own bodies. If all athletes are allowed to do it then it's on the table they have to make the choice about how good they really want to be it's a trade off decision they have to makethemselves
jubeikiba6 1 year ago
@jubeikiba6 I would draw the line at the upper level of what is considered normal. If normal testosterone in men is in a range of 300-800, whats wrong with taking a person's whos output is 300 and correcting it to 800? Then they can compete on skills and desire. If my pancreas wasn't pumping insulin adequately it wouldn't be cheating to take insulin.
tribulu 1 year ago
This comment has received too many negative votes show
Stossel is often right but when he's wrong he's embarrassingly wrong.
MarcusCMarcellus 2 years ago
1) Why is that barbaric? If you take unnecessary risks, and have the money too pay for the resources used to rescue you, why should taxpayers be forced to pay your bill? It's not "barbaric" it's logical.
2)Over population is a major issue. And cutting off welfare benefits and letting markets work is the best way for population growth to reach an equilibrium without the government putting a gun to anybodies head.
TimeWarp66 2 years ago 2
3) If I want to use steroids, or an athlete wants to take steroids, and the sports league he works for doesn't have a problem with it, that's none of the governments business, nor is it yours, comrade.
TimeWarp66 2 years ago 2
Why shouldn't people who take unnecessary risks pay for their own rescue? What's barbaric about personal responsibility? If you want to go cliff diving and your parachute gets snagged on an outcropping, why the hell should anyone else pay to get you out of the predicament you got yourself into just because you wanted a cheap thrill? I also don't understand your point about the world's population. What exactly is THE problem about which you speak?
DarcPrynce 2 years ago
abuse in the first place is wrong and even then only 5 out of 100 steroid users experience uncontroled aggression and those are the people that were assholes or had a bad attitude to begin with. And certain people use them with the intention to become more dangerous than they already are e.g. criminals/rapists/murderers.
There's also a big difference between careless use (abuse) & intelligent use preferably under a physicians guidance. In the end it all comes down to ones personality.
Farshad86 2 years ago
This is one time that I don't agree with Stossel. I've met a guy on roids an he was definately more agressive and more detatched.
3marie2g 2 years ago
He actually does say that steroids can increase aggression in some people. Where is the conflict?
rationalCrash 2 years ago
If a person take them and experience mood swings or uncontroled aggression or whichever sideeffect it may be then the problem lies with that individual. It's a sign that his/her body can't handle the change in the chemical balance that has been forced upon it by the steroids.
There is no safe drug that ever exist, theres always a benefit to risk ratio. Name any medication and X number of people will suffer adverse effects. X number will tolerate them very well.
Farshad86 2 years ago
Here's my opinion on roids...I believe the reason they are illegal is based on government control. Yes the whole uneven playing field thing or whatever, but the fact is they don't want society taking them, getting bigger, and essentially gaining power, beating up cops, people abusing them and more assault, etc.Though my examples may suck i believe the reason is based on control of society and regulating the people to fit a mold.
gymratg88 2 years ago
Sounds like a very good thought...
demorak 2 years ago
The reasons they are illegal is basically nothing to do with health risks and almost completely to do with sports. Its all about sports cheating, it is the ultimate reason why they made them a controlled substance. Which to me has got to be the dumbest reason ever to make them illegal to everyone especially since the majority of steroid users are non-athletes(so they can't be cheating in anything) and doing them purely for cosmetic reasons.
