Be careful when doing this. You alter the rhythmic flow of right hand -> transforming 3-part divided beat in a 4-part one. You transformed the triplets in a 16th-8th-16th notes pattern.
Thank you for posting this, sir! I'm now getting the hang of this majestic piece thanks to you. I'm a total amateur, but I took it slow, just hitting C with my left every "&" and then adding in A-flat after. It doesn't take long before the count fades away and you really hear the music. Thank you!!
Just curious. Since you have the sheet music in front of you in the video, what are the written time signatures for both treble and bass clef? My guess is 4/4 on bass clef and 6/8 on treble. Also thanks for the much needed tutorial. While the notes are simple it is the offset time signatures that give it complexity. And beauty.
Happy to hear this vid has helped some folks learn to play this magic piece. And thanks heaps to those offering more advice... all really useful. Take it easy all :)
If you want to grasp the whole concept, be familiar with the 3 beats over two beats rythm: Try to get steady triplets in your right hand (for example) and do the doubles with your left hand. Practice on a table. Your may hear '1, 2 & 3', but make sure you can also feel your right hand go '1,2,3' in a steady rythm and your left hand go '1,2' in a steady rythm.
Thank you so much for this video! I was having such a hard time learning this! Couldn't have done it without this video. I just started playing again (I quitted piano for about 6 years!), so it is really heard to practice different rythms with each hand again. Thank you so much again!!
I find the easiest way to play two over three is to set a metronome, start playing triplets with my right hand, then ad in the eigth notes on my left, just a little tip!
not dif fi cult not dif fi cult.. to get maximum effect of polyrhythm play each hand as legato as possible (notice the slurs and how its phrased) its nice of you to relate the rhythms to one another in an understandable way but feeling it '1 2 and 3' is not the intent of the composer if you listen to glassworks notice how independent the right hand is from the left. the way you explain it shows how the rhythms coexist but when the rhythms butt heads its beautiful and intriguing!
Thanks MC for your comments and observations. As a pianist on the level of 'tinkering', playing a polyrythm was something new to me. This was the method that got me from not being able to play the piece at all, to being able to let my right hand and left hand do their own thing (when I could forget the '1 2 and 3'). I needed the transition of seeing how the rhythms coexisted. Indeed there is exquisite beauty beyond this :)
Thanks i,ve been hammering away on this now for a good few days and i think ive got it about right now just a bit of polishing to do . Its a tough one i think to get in your head and people all seem to play it slightly different but thanks to you nearly got it so Many Many Thanks
haha, i lived in adelaide most my life - its a very anglo accent over here.
as for the timing... its so bloody hard!!! i do it as slow as possible and still i keep saying 1 and 2 and 3 and 1 and 2 and.... youre obviously pretty 'adept' at the piano, can you post some more ofyour work?
Snap - grew up in Adelaide and returned for 7 years till 4 years ago. :)
I just tinker on the piano - thought I would never get the timing on this piece but it just 'clicked' at some point. Just keep on going really slowly... you will get there! Then it's just a matter of gradually speeding it up. :) Will post some more piano as time and motivation allow! Best wishes, mate. PS Just say 1, 2 and 3 ... not 1 AND 2 and 3 - Good luck
refer to my other post as to why, but yes, i tried and tried and just couldnt get it, then about 4.45 am it just 'clicked'.. now to get the beat and transitions right. thanks mate
4.45am sounds like a perfect time for the technique to 'click' - too much thinking not good for playing! Can hear Glassworks floating across the Pacific Ocean. Cheers, mate :)
Listening the music.....humm..... challeng acept!! then I print the sheet... looks so easy... and when I TRY to play.... O_O
I was fuking crazy... can´t do that... until I see your helpfull video... so I did some progress!! Thanks!!

Oh my god!
You, teacher, are incredibly genius. My own piano teacher has tried for hours to teach it to me and it was all for nothing.
Then I saw your viedeo and all of a sudden, I'm able to play it!
You're not interested into coming to Germany every week and giving me piano lessons?? ;-)

I was playing it all wrong. Glad you saw the importance of posting this lesson.

How long did it take you teach your brain this?? I've been trying this for the past two hours and it's really frustrating. :(
On another note, do you do piano lessons???
