  • The "Dangerous" Dan Toler era is embarrassing. Sorry but it's totally true. Dan sucks compared to all the other ABB guitarists.

  • there guitar player are literally fucking insane!! holy shit how can u top that!! u cant!

  • was at this show awesome band also remember great show they did at florida gym alligator ally with BB KING ALMOST GOT THROWN OUT OF GYM FOR ILLEGAL SUBSTANCES BUT FORTUNATELY CAMPUS POLICE DID NOT WANT ME TO MISS GREAT SHOW

  • this would have been a excellent song for brent myland of the dead to cover ....truely amazing solo from dan

  • Como fui demorar tanto pra descobrir essa banda!?

  • i think i know that bitch

  • Rockin'! Dickey looks like one of the Village People here!

  • Who dislikes this......Real nice upload, Man !! Me and my Buddy got captured playing this one by surprise when i was hosting an open jam....check it out if u like ....Peace

  • When dwane allman died the allman brothers died. This is the same as the jimi hendrix experience playing without jimi after he died.

  • @magistrorm2 Your comment might hold more sway if you spelled Duane Allman's name right.

  • Used to watch them play until 3-4 in the morning at the Wharehouse in New Orleans, then they would play for free at Audbon park on Sunday!! Wow what jams...

  • @navray1 omg u are so lucky!! wow they are fucking incredible!!

  • Yup, that's how ya do it.

  • @masonslashify you obviously have never been to an Allman Brothers concert

  • 1:59 - 2:08 is the face of concentration

  • This footage of Dan Toler playing a solo simply took my breath away when I first watched it a few days ago. Of all the videos of this great soloist I've found on You Tube, this one is most spectacular, I think. He excelled himself this time. Such skilful and soulful playing. Dickie Betts is doing wonders here as well. God bless these guys. And get well soon, Dan Toler. Greetings from afar.

  • Warren....

  • Greatest jam band ever! I really liked Lynyrd Skynyrd until I realized how much they ripped off the Allan Bros. sound. The Allman's were the greatest of their time.

  • they didnt play this song when they played at darien lake, or i was too wasted, either way i was bummed that i didnt hear it

  • sweet upload! thanks!

  • great vid

  • too much fucking solo

  • @masonslashify seriously..that's what's the Allman Brothers are notorious for..they're a jammy band.

  • I saw them (not Dickey of course) play this at the Wanee festival this year. Best live performance I have ever seen. Now if i see Dickey and his band play (songs like Jessica, Blue Sky, In memory of elizabeth reid, and rambling man) my life will be complete.

  • the best

  • That guitar solo is fuckin CRAZY

  • this vid brings tears to my eyes

  • Wish I could have been there

  • I saw them at Red Rocks in 1993, unbelieveable

  • Dangerous Dan Toler looks like Inigo Montoya from The Princess Bride....LOL!

"Hello, My name is Inigo Montoya, you killed my father, prepare to die."

  • Ahhhh Man--I KNEW that Mean 'ole Woman--------she's now my EX-----{thankee Lord!!!} XD

  • That is most certainly an Alembic bass - the "signature" model judging by the controls.

  • Q q isso! BOM DEMAISSSSSSSS!

  • this is mind blowin' music!!

  • I don't remember that other drummer, who was he?

  • @edwinf9999 That's David "Frankie" Toler. He died in June after a long ilness. His brother Dan is on guitar here. He's been diagnosed with ALS and they are having a benefit for him on Aug 13.

  • Thanks internet, thank you youtube. It's 00:31 and I'm watching this in Peru!

  • DAMN!!!!!!!!!!!

  • This is NOT 1979. It's 1981.

  • @fschiazza Hey Brother - it was Oct. 26 1980. I saw them a few months earlier at the Cape Cod Coliseum. I checked the ABB website to make sure.

  • Classic. Love it!

  • Dangerous Dan Toler....nuff said!

  • Is that a Hyak bass?

  • @Doublefeature56 i think its an alembic bass

  • i think something just exploded in my ears. oh, it was my loins.

  • GREAT VIDEO!!

  • iam not tellin nukes are farts

  • iam not tellin

  • Dan Toler's solo is amazing.

  • This is actually from 1982.

  • this song fuckin rocks hard

  • This was an amazing venue... too bad human greed turned the entire campus into student housing and shrines to giant donors. I remember seeing free shows there back in the 90's... awesome place... I like the classic untreated wood look - as it was intended. It was the perfect place for the Allman's to play. Wish I could have been there to see this show live. Wow.......

  • Nice

  • @ArtsPatron2008 I Can't remember what i was talking about.

  • dickie steps back to give dan his space on his solo...thats class

  • Does anyone know where in Gainesville this is?

  • @victorcharlie121: On the campus of the university.

  • 3 people are missing ears.

  • I would have loved to hear Eric Clapton cut loose on this song.

  • I was there and sealed the overhead stage before the concert!

  • An awesome performance by Dangerous Dan Toler. I have fond memories of this incredible tour...the introduction of Dan Toler and David Goldflies and the revival of twin lead guitars something that was missing in ABB for a very long time...they had to mourn the passing of Duane as we all did but when Dan Toler and David Goldflies came into the picture, wow.... I was blown away by this lineup and wish they have never messed with the cast of characters.

  • @Skyman46: Why were Dan and David not invited back when he band reformed in 1989?

  • @aarfeld A very good question I wish I knew? I've heard or read somewhere that Butch Trucks didn't care for Dan Toler and didn't want him back...not sure? In 84 or 85 I saw two different performances with Dickey Betts and Friends which included Betts, Trucks, Goldflies and Jimmy Hall...that was the last time I saw David Goldflies. Goldflies is the best bass player I have ever seen live, easily.

  • @Skyman46: It's a shame that Dickey's mid-'80s band with Jimmy Hall was never recorded--I've heard they were terrific. I've discovered that David Goldflies has a web site on which he discusses his career; check it out.

  • @aarfeld Because they play Dick Betts & Great Southern now

  • @Peachess1965: No, neither of the Toler brothers were in Great Southern in recent years and I don't know what they were doing in the '90s when Dickey led the ABB. For a while in the '80s, when the ABB was on hiatus, Dan played in the Gegg Allman Band.

  • @aarfeld I guess YT didn't like my post as some of it was cut off...What it did say was: "What a shame that Dan wasn't brought back. Because seeing him with Dickey Betts & Great Southern is always a great time" Both Toler brothers have been with DB & Great Southern since DB left The ABB...I've had the pleasure to chat with the Band every summer when they do the Guitar Fest in Buffalo

  • Is there a DVD of this?

  • Somebody nudge me. I think I just passed out. Wooo!

  • Dangerous Dan is a freakin' genius!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

  • Freakin' amazing!!!

  • OUTSTANDING!! What more needs to be said?

  • Dan Toler's solo here is just over the top. You can't find people who can do magnum opus solos like this anymore. I hope you people that watched this know what you just watched.....

  • 3 people are deaf and watching Allman Brothers concerts on youtube

  • The baseline in this tune is off the hook!

  • indeed i do:)

  • toler?

  • whos dangerous dan??

  • I would mustard gas an orphanage to be at this show.

  • @mandersoncooper lol thats really funny

  • "Enlightened Rogues" period ABB is VERY under-rated period for them (tho this came a few years later, after the not-too-great "Brothers of the Road"). Toler was great with them.

  • Dangerous Dan really brings it up a notch here!

  • Dangerous Dan's solo was fabulous, true to the spirit of the original yet he put his own jazzy stamp on it. Gregg might have had a cold that day? BTW, Dickey's Statesboro Slide work from this concert is smokin!!

  • I don't know why iv never heard this song til today. BUT IT KICKS ASS!

  • its hard for me to watch this vid without berry oakley tearing it up at the beginning. let alone have duane not there :/

  • I actually think Dickeys lead at 625 is one of the most vicious leads I have ever seen, I had this on VHS in the 80's and wore that part out rewinding it

  • that bass is beautiful, i wish i had a alembic like his

  • very good song

  • duane seems like the type to talk smack to his woman and get away with it.

  • @froschein: Why would you bring that up?

    You a wife-beater?

  • This is 1981. I wish some real 1979 video would be released. '79 was a great comeback year for the Brothers.

  • best song and best band i love the ABB

  • One of the best marriages of song and singer in that genre. I got the change to tell Greg that - not that he needs me to validate him. He seemed to like what I had to say none the less, and it was a great privilege to have the conversation.

  • The date on the video has to be wrong. I see David Toler is the other drummer. Gregg, Dickey and Butch (original members) decided to vote fellow original member Jaimoe out of the band for some reason in late 1980. The ABB played in 81 and 82 with Butch Trucks and David Toler on drums, Dan Toler and Dickey on guitar and David Goldflies on bass. Goldflies and the two Toler brothers came into the ABB via Dickey who had them in his 1970's version of Great Southern.

  • @boblackey1, I read that Jamoe's back was so bad he didnt want to do the tour.

  • @klmullins65 No Jaimoe was voted out of the band by Gregg Allman, Butch Trucks and Dickey Betts. The four surviving founding members have one vote. So when it is three votes to one, you loose. Same with Dickey being voted out in 2000. It was sad for Jaimoe. He said he showed up for the next gig and another drummer was set up in his spot and one of the roadies told him he was out. Jaimoe said it really hurt his feelings.

  • dont ask me i dont give a damn

  • this seems the best one on youtube....the song Rocks!!

  • This ABB line up is awesome

  • The song is about his relationship with Cher..rofl.

  • 'richiebear' fyi, this song was written, and recorded before Gregg ever met Cher

  • frankie Toler is a drummer

  • Isnt Frankie Toler the bassist? dans bro...

  • No. This is: David "Rook" Goldflies

  • yeah thats right! good look on that one. He plays well.

  • right i had never heard of this toler guy til i saw this vid... consider my mind blown

  • ya he's great.. him and Dickey are a great team

  • yea man dan toler deserves WAYYYYYY more credit. dan toler was incredible man, that guy could really really play. and he still can

  • Who the hell is the "all about me" bassist?

  • someone with more talent than you lol

  • I used to play this! A lovely track to freeform to! The other guitarist and I rarely played the same lead for each gig and bounced lines off each other! Great days!

  • This concert is amazing one great tune after an other. Too bad I was 12 then

  • nice to hear Dangerous Dan. He is really underrated

  • :~) Yeah it's good !!

  • this is a very subtle detail, but you can see the respect they have for each other when Dickey Betts moves a aside to give dan toler the stage

  • JEEEEEEEEZ!!!! yes!!!

  • When Duane was playin' I saw him adjust his tone constantly. Being a new guitar player, what the purpose of that?

    Curious...

  • He's just tweaking the tone to suit the song. Duane looks like he did it so he could get a creamier sounding tone for the solo.

  • he was stoned

  • so what?

  • changing the tone controls helps give greater dynamics throughout the song. one minute its soft and bassy and you can build it up to where its full screaming treble. especially if you plays blues stuff. it can convey different moods or feelings. guys like jimmy page and santana do it alot.

  • well sometimes during a particular point in a song you might want less volume, or more volume, a deeper or darker sound, or a bright sound. he was just adjusting the sound to how he wanted to hear it. he was almost a perfectionist in the way he wanted everything real tight and together. he was brilliant.

  • Awesome performance!

  • A fabuloso performance that shows why Dickey Betts was and still is the best frontman alive today. The 1979 lineup of the ABB kicked ass and took names. This rendition of Whipping Post is a true classic. Thank you Dickey Betts for some great music. Juiceman

  • Dickey's guitar work in this version is Fuckin Awesome!

  • Where was this concert on campus? I go to school at UF and have never seen this place before. They must have torn it down.

  • UF Bandshell at Flavet Field

Musuem Rd and Woodlawn Dr, between Musuem Rd & Stadium Rd, Near the baseball and track fields, Gainesville, FL, 32611

  • THANKS!

  • @viv2600 In 1981 when I was livin' in Gville, we used to call this Lake Alice Field. I went to this show, BTW. Needless to say, it was a momentuous day! Lots of Gainesville Green wafting through the raucous crowd...

  • Is Dickeys guitar a 1952 les paul?

  • unclesalty2008, Dickeys guitar is actually a 57' i believe. before the 57's all goldtops were equipped with soapbar P90 pickups. here he has humbuckers.

  • its nice to hear a solo from dangerous dan he is really very good

  • yeah, i never gave him due props before i saw this clip

  • @salty7121 agreed, wow.

  • This is from more like 80 or 81, I think. This is from the Reach For The Sky/Brothers Of The Road era. Frankie Toler is playing drums instead of Jaimoe. I saw this concert on PBS back in 91. Not necessarily the best Allmans show I've heard, but it had it's moments. It was a shame Mike Lawler insisted on breaking out the (ahem) keytar on a couple songs.

  • for all you that play guitar , this song is on the KEY of G ( but they dont play the G CHORD )...but the chord progression used on the music begin on Am7 ,Bm7 , C and D ...if you want to understand the Dan "KILLER" Toller AMAZING solo , practice the DORIAN MODE on the KEY of AM , Saudações RASTA !!!

  • it's in Am tard. learn2aural skills. Am, B/D as an ascending diatonic passing segue, C, etc. Then D7 to E7 before the chorus.

  • Comment removed

  • DAN AWESOME SOLO , ON DUANE GUITAR is A MUST ...and a true ACT o VALORIZATION OF OUR ROOTS ...ALL THOSE ALLMAN BRODERS STILL LIVES ON ...FOREVER !!!

  • damn them for not showing the 2 drummers

  • Thats the best shot ever, you see him playing guitar in the reflection of his shades!

  • Wow to have been a student at Univ Fla at that day! How mind blowing to have them playing on campus. Plus even Gainesville was gettting turned on by then.

I love the shot where you can see Dangerous Dan playing in the reflection of his own shades - cool.

  • The bass player (David Godflies) looks like a cross between Bill Gates and Phil Lesh

  • dude i went to a chuck leavell concert in december . dude kicked ass and he's cool as fuck.

  • I bought this vid on VHS back in the 80's and wore out the part at 625 where Dickey goes BERSERK.I would rewind it and watch it over and over again.

  • Man,Dan Toler was destined for a mullet !

He came to Chattanooga with Dickie in 2002 and did a pretty good show !

  • damn dickey betts looks like a badass...

  • is that phil on bass?haha

  • Beautiful!!!!

  • Damn, the bass players playing an Alembic. You'd think he'd stick with something a little lower-tech.

  • this bassist can effin play man

  • the guitarist are great with wide vibratos...and everything else.

  • something that will bother me for my entire life is that i was to young to see the original lineup. even while being a musician of a totally different type of music these guys are still at the top for influences. plain and simply unbelieveable...

  • true that. they were and are amazing.

  • Absolutely fan-f,.&&ing tastic..These guys are some of the finest musicians in the world at the time of this show. All young and in thier prime. Dangerous Dan Toler is a talent from another planet as is Dickey. Butch & Gregg are just as cool as ever. I saw the Brothers about a month before Duane passed and i feel truly blessed to have experienced that in my life.

    Jack

  • in '79 what bass player would that be? deff not Berry or Woody...

  • thats 'The Rook', forget his first name, but, his last is goldflies or sumthin

  • wow major arpeggios in a blues jam. usually never arpegeggios there, since its blues, you'd think it'd be on A7 or E7 in this song

  • nvm i think a might have been wrong....but still if there were it would be weird to have them in major I think...

  • i like zappa cover better :P

  • it ant no cover, the allman bros wrote it and do the best version of it, hand down

  • Since the Allman Bros wrote it and performed it first, then by definition, Zappa's excellent cover is indeed a cover of the Allman Bros song.

Both versions are excellently done and it comes down to a matter of taste.

  • nope the allman bros are just expontentially better at this song than anyone and it will always be that way.....like infinitely better

  • im not talking about subjective tastes i'm talking about facts of life.

  • Then either you need to live more or you are simply stupid.

No one in the Allman Bros can hold a candle to Zappa's mastery of the guitar, production, arrangements, or sheer genius.

  • pinkfloyd666 = FAILURE

  • killer solo by toler!

this era whipping posts always had the most intense drumming... it's just incredible how those 2 integrate with each other

  • these guys are fing the shit man no one today plays with the chops these guys did plus no record company would give them the freedom to do what they did!!!!!

  • How can I be only the 7th comment? This is phenomenal! Had I known what I now know, I would have hitched down from NJ to FL to see this show at age 6! BTW, did everybody catch that last altered lyric? Wow, a bit new age/LSD for me, but, hey, whatever you're feelin' GA !

  • i know, that was spine tingling!

  • Great watch. Awesome playing by Dan the Man. I think Gregg was a little "altered", but he pulled it off. :)

  • pretty dope guitarist. Who is that? it's not one of the trucks...

  • DICKEY BETTS

  • the second solo is dickey. Not sure who the first is?

  • This song is so much fun to play live.

  • Dan Toler

  • awesome
