This is great! All I ever hear nowadays are terrible remixes of past masterpieces in dubstep or electronica, regurgitated beats and re-hashed #1 singles... This has character!! I owe you a Thanks!
Maddog I think what you did with this song is amazing! It gives it an almost haunting effect and brings it into the world of the 21st century. Though I never knew him I think Son House would have been well pleased.
Maddog. Thanks, glad you like it. All I had was Son House singing and clapping a capella. I'd never heard another version, so I just put some chords to it that worked.
@maddogwyatt It was a blind Willie Johnston song originally + Jack White included it withing Canon. And i don't think you would ever let the hate get to you but il support you against it regardless. Great cover, Son House would be very proud.
@LPflapjack , Thanks Flapjack. I'm thinking of redoing my version of "Grinnin' in your face" because it's a bit ordinary. I'm thinking industrial noises and some human beatbox for the Rhythm track. Maybe lots of analogue synth stuff. That should piss off the purists!
Really enjoyed this mix..I'm not exactly sure what a Blues Purist is but i think there missing the point of the..The Blues was about emotion and feeling take gospel and work songs and making them your own ..Which is what i try to do and what you seemed to accomplish here with excellent results....
My only complaint is that the mix seems too narrow -- especially noticed this in the last third of the song. The harmony parts need to be more aggressively panned left and right. It's too crowded in the middle and flat sounding as is. Otherwise, I like the arrangement and it seems more interesting than many cover versions. If this brings more attention to Son House and Blind Willie Johnson, so much the better. I'd say be even more daring next time and I'm looking forward to more of this sort.
@maorisports .Thanks very much - glad you like it. I have done another, a version of "Grinnin'in your face", but it's not as good. I think that maybe the first one was a happy accident. I'll have another go when I'm less busy trying to find replacement singers for our functions band, Limited Company Band (footage on YouTube if you're interested).
This is a great job, giving a new twist to the original. A very good piece of work, by a very good musician. Purists will prefer the original, but there is nothing wrong with doing variations as good as this. Definitely going onto my favourites! Well done my man.
@BLACKMAGICMETALMAN12 Thanks very much. The most work was cutting up the vocal into single bars and making them run in time with the rhythm track. The guitar playing was easy - just cranked up my slide through a valve Marshall preamp. The reason it's not very "Purist", is because I'd never heard the song, so the the chords were just what I thought would fit !!
I'm glad you liked it. I can't really do tab, but it's in E flat and dead easy. The slide guitar was tuned to E major (E,B,E,G sharp,B, E). The rhythm guitar in the left speaker was the Les Paul playing simple barre chords in standard tuning(lifting the fingers off before replacing them for the chord). You might like to hear my band. Search "Limited Company Band" and you'll find our demo dvd and some other bits and pieces.

I own the original version. By blind willie johnson. Its amazing as well. Your version is missing one important factor, the blues.

@Guadana If everyone was as narrow-minded as you, there would be no new music at all, cause it's all been done!!

I think you really ruined the song. You shouldnt mess with things that are great

Great attempt. Must've been really difficult. I'm not gonna be a purist cunt and hate it. I can tell some work went into this. Good job.

@maddogwyatt No, a purist would hate it for the fact that you put a beat and a guitar and vocal harmony in it. I like what you did.

I really like this version. You should post the tab for it. (Shameless begging...)
