although you don't need to know kungfu to USE a rope dart, the reason you should is mostly because you need good control of your body before you can pick one of these things up, I don't know martial arts but i can use a rope dart at an intermediate level, I've never hit myself in my life... however this weapon does take years to MASTER. no matter who you think you are.
1:13 to 1:20 IS THE SHYT!! Just stqarting to appreciate rope weapons and their effectivness.not to mention the skill to master it. im practicing with my phone charger (x^,*x)
rome wasn't built in a day. You need a basic undersanding of kung fu before you can do anything near as cool as this. Take me for example, ive been training in southern kung fu for 5 years (wing chun, choy li fut, & Tai Chi), and i wouldnt even attempt the rope dart. There are MASTERS that wont even touch this thing.
so ya, i mean i hate horse stance just as much as anyone, but without the basics and YEARS of hard work ("kung fu" does translate to "hard work") its just not a good icea.
You at least need the five basic forms. I know nothing but the basic blocking techniques in kung fu but that was enough of a foundation for me to build up my rope dart skill on top of. And to answer JNVsor's question it is loose between his hands, not elasticated.
That's like saying you need a higher understanding of military tactics to shoot a gun. nonsense.
All you need to start learning this is a rope with a weight at the end. For your own sake, that weight should be somewhat soft, since you ARE going to hit yourself.
Previous knowledge of traditional kung fu might be helpful, but it's definitely not necessary.
The simple answer to your question is: Momentum. When the Dart is whirled in a cicle (oval, elipse etc) it gains the momentum to move away from the hand. And if released in the right second, it will use that momentum to launch itself where you want it.
Please do tell me if you've found a torrent about Rope Dart! :)
Thanks very much for the christmas wishes very much appreciated hope all is good in your lives?really like this vid Merry Christmas and a Happy newyear to you and all your people too from the UK..Mark
I mean you could do this all day long and have a great time. It seems like it might also be a form of meditation because your mind is so focused on the kite and the moves that you totally forget about your problems. So, instead of sending people to a psychiatrist they should send them to a teacher to help them to focus their minds on these creative movements and beautiful flow of energy.
Nice indeed! Graceful and light, flexible and hard simultaneusly. But each weapon has two sides in its application - the first assumes advantages and the second - it could be dangerous for user. However it is better to have more techiques than less, and my own practice develops in such a way.
Quite possibly the best xeng biao clip i've seen thus far. Very complicated combinations of simple moves beautifully performed with diligence and grace.
this video is awesome. smooth flow and those foot stalls are excellent. well done.

This is awesome. Just wondering though, would this ever have been used in actual combat? Would be pretty cool if it had :)

i would call your style fire because the dart itself never gets close to your body you can easily call yourself a pro good job

It loks like fighting with a bird, graceful and elegant. Except it can only peck once per strike.Still, for the sake of art it's interesting

I'm getting one of these :D
After finding a bunch of tutorial videos I understand the concepts more, and I know what this guy is actually doing...
My question is, how does he shoot it so far out?
Is the rope loose between his 2 hands?
Is it elastic? xD
Do I need to learn traditional wushu to excel with the rope dart? I hate horse stance! xD
And does anyone know a torrent or something that can teach me more about this amazing skill?

I dont think so.
Anyone could pick up a rope with a weight in the end, and spin it. The rest are just simple physic equations.
It's true that practice makes perfect, but Kung Fu and Rope Dart are to different things in my opinion.

Despite the recent proliferation of the rope dart, this is still my favourite sheng biao video on YouTube. Well done.
