Aluminium is generally covered with an oxide layer, in order to remove this layer and get the reaction going a drop of Cu2+ (or any other metal ion with a higher standard electrode potential) is needed. Reaction then taking the place is as follows:
hmm I dont know about you, but our chemistry teacher let a few students inhale hydrogen for the squeaky voice... did she take it from a cylinder..? thats the only thing that could've made her pass out lol
Helium does make you pass out, because it replaces the oxygen in your lungs. however, it is not that dangerous, because it is lighter than air, allowing it to disperse much more thoroughly than hydrogen
What's even more fun is if you put a few drops of phenolphthalein in the mix. Then the presence of the OH- ions makes it an amazing magenta, wooo. To avoid having the H2+ gas go everywhere, use a Erlenmeyer flask and a balloon stretched over the top to catch the hydrogen.
...then light the balloon on fire. :D Chemistry ftw.
right after you put a metal in the soultion, light a stick on fire and blow it out, make sure it has embers. stick it close to right over the reaction. If there is a flaming pop, then hydrogen is being given off.
lol i only work with sulfuric acid zinc caustic copper nickel you nitrate lol anythink i can do with those chemicals oh and i work with hydrothrolic acid and a 10% acid yep thats all
i know another dangeroucs reaction ive done it at my work i do chrome plating zinc plating well ive mixed zinc with hydro acid and a mix of 10% acid and that made a dangeroucs smelly gass

this is stupid......... because alll thats happening is bubbles form from hydrogen releaseing
WTFratt 1 year ago
yeap hydrogen gas released for both reactions..studying with calcium
not as same as magnesium...magnesium is cool and much more expensive than calcium.

does anyone know the particle diagram for HCI+magnesium? rly stuk on ma homework... guess thats what happens when you dont listen in school lol

where can I get 10% HCl acid and 90% H2O? I need It for CaO3 detection.
juanarruti 2 years ago
It becomes hot probably because heat energy was given off during the reaction as well.

is this the same with mg and hydrochloric acid?

what was produced?,i believe it was magnesium chloride and calcium chloride,with hydrogen on both
pyrogeniuses 2 years ago
@pyrogenius
When metals react with hydrochloric acid they displace the hydrogen producing a chloride salt and hydrogen. So your right
mewrox99 2 years ago
its beter and easier to see when you add colour to the acid, or use a coloured acid.
OliandMikeShow 2 years ago
I did it like thousand times and I wasnt even hurt.
I did not wear any equipment.
Did it outside my house.
Then i collected H2 and bursted it with fire.
FUN.
Im 13.
Try with Al, it also works.
Al + 2HCL -> AlCl2 + H2

Aluminium is generally covered with an oxide layer, in order to remove this layer and get the reaction going a drop of Cu2+ (or any other metal ion with a higher standard electrode potential) is needed. Reaction then taking the place is as follows:
6 HCl(aq) + 2 Al(s) → 2 AlCl3(aq) + 3 H2(g)
kaviaari 2 years ago
i did this once in chem....
it also becomes hot after the reaction
HflowerP 3 years ago
instead of wasting money on Mg... i just use sparkler sticks... and then try to collect the H2 off it..
have you mixed napisan and hcl together... its like mentos and coke..

Mg + 2HCl = MgCl2 + H2
Ca + 2HCl = CaCl2 + H2
These two kings of metals are becoming more expensive.

Was that first one Really magnesium?
Shit, that was better than when Sir showed it us!
FreakyGingie1994 3 years ago
Maybe the hydrochloric acid you used was diluted more, and maybe the magnesium the person in this video used was bigger than the one you used.

Helium gives you the squeaky voice.
Helium doesn't make you pass out because it's a little bit heavier than hydrogen gas.

Hydrogen is lighter than helium. They used it in blimps until the Hindenburg blew.

and its nonreactive with anything on your body.

i burned my hand cuz i was holding the test tube while it was reacting.
naruto7772006 4 years ago
lmao did the same thing today haha
mboy1991 4 years ago
Tecnically though the Chloride Ion plays no part, as all ions are free in solution, hence:
HCl ==> H+ + Cl-
Ca/Mg ==> Ca/Mg2+ + 2e-
2H+ + 2e- ==> H2
Hence:
Ca/Mg(s) + 2H+(aq) ==> Ca/Mg2+(aq) H2(g)
So the ions in solution at the end are Ca/Mg 2+ and Cl- (assuming no excess of acid)

Only as a gas yes the simplified reaction is:
