I think devanand meets her accidentally and likes her. unfortunately the rich and evil zamindar traps the poor girl and the child in the beginning of the song is a result of this. girl tries to commit suicide..but a wandering Sheppard saves her. The beauty is that dev anand seeks her out, and marries her inspite of her circumstances and his mother.
One of my topmost favourite duet, easily tops my collection of those song that I listen in continuous mode for days together. This soundtrack version I find a bit faster than I have always heard.
