  • how did this... oh wait the American lemons is the same thing, only its a 24 hour race...and a similar race of old cars takes place in Australia...DAMN!

  • proper racing!

  • Some things never change.

  • Wow, that was so good! yeah, what's not to like! Great video.

  • go leaf springs go

  • Was This On Story Of Camaro Movie.

  • this was the greatest racing series of all time for a few years.

  • thaank you for using American Moters film footag in your video :) AMC rules

  • I'm glad we have the American Iron class in the SCCA/NASA races. Brings us back to these days.

  • I want to know that song in the begining, during the parade lap

  • who in the blue HELL disliked this, lol

  • @willie201000 a prius owner

  • wow. in the good old days, not every US American was a fatso!

  • It looks like the editor of this film was inspired by the movie "Grand Prix". Nice piece. Those were some great days. I loved that time.

  • Ahh, the good old days (3 years before I was born), when cars were real cars, men were men and women didn't have access to processed food. -Those were the days.

  • ххуя ревут.....

  • Camaros, challengers, javelins and mustangs. And a couple of porsches lol.

  • @Vaicurious

thing r totally opposite this days

  • Those are real cars unlike the crap that is coming out of today's designers...F@ck 20" rims!

  • AMC Javelin is one of the most underrated American muscle/ race cars. Jimmy Richards has built on to race in the Australian Touring Car Masters. Can't wait to see some recognition for these awesome race cars in Oz!!!!! For sure a series that a yank should see or look up showcasing American and aussie racecars from the era. There's Also some shitty glorified VW's if you like them too.

  • This brings back some old and happy memories. My wife (girlfriend at the time) and I were members of the Duluth SCCA in 1969 and 1970. We used to work the races at Donneybrooke. Both Tommy and Bobby Archer were members at that time.

  • SCCA trans-amracing

    Grand AM grand-am

    IMSA professionalsportscar

they just can't sell as many paint or beer advertisements as Nascar. Although Infineon and Watkins Glen road race NASCAR is pretty awesome, but most people don't even know they happen every year.

  • @firechixen Why not just merge the SCCA Trans-am with Arca, modified the rule of Arca with the GT-1 rules but keep out the car that cost to much (you know, add the wing and the front spoiler, put the light on, reduce the weight limit but add a large restrictor plate at every race except Daytonas&Talladega)

  • @therrydicule Politics.... SCCA, FIA and NASCAR (whatever they are called) will never submit to what makes sense, when authority is the main reason the existence... sorry I wish there was a kool proracing program like that. amuetur racing you can find it.

  • @firechixen Yeah, yeah... But I prefer seeing a field of 50 cars that are a little bit better than ARCA, than see a field of 60 late model or 18 GT-1. If a sponsor were making a deal saying "here what we like to see... We are paying a couple of million for it", I think it will be "cool". And since Trans-am and Arca have similar roots and are not so far away, on a technical level....

  • @therrydicule Maybe since Indycar was able to reunite they would be the the sanctioning body with the best chance. What would be really interesting is a partner class of ARCA/GT1 cars running the previous day to Indycar. so you could race Laguna Seca and Daytona, but not like Grand am that runs prototypes and GT cars at the same time. even some international races would be great. I drove a 91 toyota mr2 and a 69 firebird set up to road race in the same competition it was awesome.

  • im 24.....i love vintage trans am racing...i was born in wrong decade!

  • @chevyman6671 I'm there with you dude! Definitely the 1960s where American motorsports golden decade.

  • @chevyman6671 Me too

  • @Raimondo988

succhia cazzi ricchioone sfondato in culo

  • @chevyman6671 Nope! Try the American Iron series from NASA. It's like Trans Am but on a much more smaller scale, but same action.

  • @chevyman6671 I share the same feeling......weak cars nowadays :( wish i had a damn time machine

  • The first steps are taken, the muscle cars are back. Now bring this back!

  • im only 21 but what i wouldnt give to be born back then just to see these cars race in their prime.

  • How did NASCAR get more popular than this? I hate our country.

  • They should make a game about this... and fast! F**k Gran Turismo 5 :)

  • @flaperke they shoulda put this in Gran Turismo!

  • i love the four wheel drifts coming out of each corner. this is what racing is. big power, no grip. most skill wins

  • Sure would like to get a copy of this , Brainerd was my home tack .

  • YOUR'S IS BETTER THAN MINE.

  • AMCs were great cars too :)

  • I'd love to see this race today with 2010 Camaros, Cobra Mustangs and Hemi Challengers going all out, Just put cages and race tires on and let em have it out....And it would be fitting to bring back the Pontiac Trans Am to race in it.

  • fuck yeah out of control road racing!

  • poor porsches... never stood a chance

  • @13soccer10 Unless you maintained a strict naturally aspirated rule, Porsches would probably rule. They are aimed at more rarefied performance these days.

  • @DocWolph what the eff are you on about then? here Porsches are at the back of the grid full of muscle cars.

Nowadays of course a stock Porsche should beat a stock mustang or camaro... totally different price ranges and aims...But brand-new, custom built racing cars are a whole nuther story.

  • @13soccer10 I have witnessed fairly recent ALMS and SCCA races, in the last few years, where 911s got paced hard or aced by Camaros and Mustangs. So I'm not given to the 911 being a shoe in.

Also custom built is relative. These aren't facsimile cars like Grand Prix. In Trans-Am, it's "strip and equip". Aside from that, it's the car you can buy off a dealer's lot.

  • @DocWolph Classic Trans-Am: strip and equip, yes. Porsches are at the back of the grid. Modern Day Trans-Am/ALMS: certainly not. There is nothing mustang in those mustangs, not even really the shell.

I'm still not really sure what your point is, we may be arguing the same side at eachother?

  • The #6 Camaro - Penske Racing with Mark Donohue driving

    Legend!

  • Comment removed

  • 3:49 is awesome.

  • The track does indeed still exist, known today as Brainerd International Speedway - brainerdraceway (dot) com. Most of the wooded areas you see in this clip are long gone; victims of a tornado a few decades ago.

  • I've got a 73 AMX (won the TA championship that year, as well as 71,72). I'd love to build it up as a street going version of a Trans Am racer. I wish they still had racing like this today. The closest I've seen is the Koni Challenge.

  • fuck nascar this is what it's all about

  • @mode101wpb The track is in Minnesota the roadrace course still exists and it was just updated for the new Muscle Milk trans am series this September will be the first time in almost 15 years trans am cars will be racing there.

  • cuz they actually turn! :D

  • Great video!

  • i love watching those classic pony cars going at it!

  • Cool video. I especially like the soundtrack during the last minute.

  • That was kind of '69 spooky. I wonder how many cars went over the rail in a ball of fire right after being overtaken by that Phoenix #13 car

I know the field didn't fare too well due to the Donahue car overtaking them all as the super 69 speed caused the blue & yellow to blend into a blur of Green #6

Those were some really groovy birds at 5:04

... and the rest is legend

  • What happened with that Phoenix #13 car?

  • the boss 302 didn't win only in 1969 cause of the crappy Firestone Tires.... (which parnelli jones had dealerships with)

  • @alexander1485

The Boss 302 didn't win the 69 season because of the lap 14 crash at St. Jovite, 7th race of the season. That crash took out the top 3 teams in the series and their season was essentially over from that point on. The Boss 302's dominated the first 6 races coming in 1st in Michigan, 1st, 2nd and 4th at Lime Rock, 2nd, 3rd,4th at mid Ohio, 1st and 5th at Bridgehampton, 1st and 3rd at Donnybrooke, and 3rd and 4th at Loudon. They were in the lead for the championship till then.

  • @Boss302racer I heard it was because of the Firestone tires they didn't win more.... because Parnelli had a Firestone tire chain that prevented them from using Goodyears that the Camaros used....

  • @alexander1485

Tires might have been a factor, Bosses handle incredibly well as it is, but after the St. Jovite wreck they had to cannabalize a pile of smashed Bosses and try to get a couple into race ready condition, the level of competition was too high to be as successful in a car that was no longer factory straight. If they could have gotten a few replacement bodies they would have been right back in it, but that's racing, they were only allowed so many factory cars, rules are rules.

  • the boss didn't win in '69. the z28 camaro did. it won '68 & '69

  • Great video mate. I'm a racing fan so this is great. :)

  • Very cool video, I love road racing, really miss the AMC Javelin, I wish Chrysler would bring it back to life.

  • Positivly bitching !! thanks for posting...

  • those cars are nicer then the cars from now

  • honestly impressed real cars that look like street cars (unlike nascar) and finally some footage of muscle drifting! probably called powersliding back then haha but i knew it couldnt be new from this generation- we just try to do it they just did :)

  • i love trans am racing the coolest road racing ever. with the new camaro challenger and mustang i think trans am racing should be brought back that would be super cool

  • well guess what isaiah213. i think we'll all get to see those 3 beasts compete next year in koni. they already started practicing with the challenger and camaro. mustang however has been racing in that series for the past couple of years and already won 3 consecutive championships. hopefully the chevy and dodge will do as well.

  • That's the T/A i remember, before it became a spec series. The 917k30 was the uber porsche!Saw it many times,as well as the 917 short-tail running the 6hr+Can-Am at the Glen vs Mario in the Ferrari.

  • Hey Heavy Metal, I believe you're thinking of the Can-Am series, not the Trans-Am. These cars had nowhere near 1500 hp and there were relatively strict rules. The Can-Am rules were more wide-open, though the max horsepower was probably about 1200 (the Penske Porsche 917-30 driven by Mark Donohue). Both were great series, however.

  • cool their drifting around every corner!

  • JONXVI you couldn't be more mistaken about the TA class in SVRA, at least when I have seen them at Mid-Ohio they are racing like there is big money! Maybe the yuppies on the West Coast are worried about scratching their cars, but not here!

  • Who said muscle cars can't turn?

  • some stupid kid with a honda haha

  • The club that holds Trans Am events is the Sports Car Club of America (SCCA) The Trans AM series is still contested today but in a much smaller scale.

Many of the cars that ran in the series in the 60's & 70's are run in vintage race ( which usually aren't really races at all) along with cars from the CanAm series and Formula cars

  • Now hang on buddy..... the time and money we spend these days to keep these 1960's cars on the track is pretty much real racing. The only exception is no trading paint. We're racing vintage cars, antiques.

There are many vintage racing clubs in America: CVAR, SVAR, CSRG, VARA. All races are open to the public. You should attend.

  • Sorry, should be Donnybrooke, not "Doonybrooke...my goof.

  • This was a 1969 Trans-Am race at "Doonybrooke" in Brainerd, Minnesota (the track still exists and is now called Brainerd International Raceway). I was an 11 year old spectator at this race in 1969, and have since tested my own road race car at BIR within the past couple of years. Not much pro road racing there anymore, but lots of club events. The track caters now more to NHRA, although the road course has recently been updated with a new 2.5 mile section.

  • This is at Donneybrook. You can only tell by the number of cars in the race.

  • great video man! love all those great engine sounds (xcept 4 da imports) and the babes! no butt cracks hangin out and they still look hot! thanks for shareing this vid with us!

  • maecomotorsport

Contact this guy. He has an acoount on here and abunch of vids of himself racing in the trans am series. The club that holds the trans am series events these days is called Monterey historics

  • There is a car club that does hold these races once in awhile. I will try to some info about it and post it.

  • Now thats what i call racing!!!!!!!

  • Awesome thanks

  • Growing up in the 80's (I'm 34) my father and I went to the Dallas Gran Prix every year and I loved this kind of racing. If I could I would love to do this for a living. Piloting a Ford Mustang. The coolest was the compact truck racing. Thanks for posting this video.

  • why dont we have a racing series like this today??? wtf!

  • the series became to insane in the end....there was no real restrictions so cars were having 1500+ hp....it mostly stopped due to the Formula 5000 series...

  • 1500+ !! .. .from 302 or similar engines?... sounds sick... (and hard to believe too).

but hey, what do I know!

  • not really, these cars had massive funding because there was no limit on superchargers or turbos, and the prize money was apparently very high....so it was basically companies going tooth and nail with one another for performance....the sky was the limit so to say.....the only requirement was that your wheels were in the wheel well (not sticking out)...so you can guess what the designers did

  • Actually, engines had to be under 305 ci and i believe they had to be naturally-aspirated.

The Ford Boss 302, which won the championship BOTH years it competed (in Mustangs, in 69-70) had about 490 BHP.

  • No way! The 302 Z/28 with the M22 "Rock Crusher" won in 68 & annihilated in 69

In 69 the Z/28 of Donahue won something like 75% of the races

  • Yeah, i was wrong (sorta). xD

The Shelby Mustangs were entered in 65 and 67, and it won both years.

Then, i thought that since the Boss 302 was made in 69-70, they raced in 69-70, because i know that every year the Boss 302 raced in, it won. But, i just now learned that the Boss 302 only raced in 1970, in which in decimated everyone, including the Camaros.

    =D

P.S. In 69, Donahue won 77%; 10 out of 13 races. He was (IMO) the greatest all-around driver ever.

  • I don't know why somebody gave you thumbs down but I brought you back up. You're not saying anything for which to thumb down

But yea, ha ha ha, 77%, I was off by 2%. I still remembered after reading it in Hot Rod Mag about 20 yrs ago

22 yrs ago I had a nice 68 Camaro but I was born in 69... it would be nice to have one of those. Or a Road Runner

  • @Chuichupachichi

    Yeah, im only 15. xD

My dad is a mechanic and he has a 1966 Ford Mustang with a 450 HP 302 in it. I've been going to carshows since i was 3 months old (or so im told, i can only remember back to when i was 2 years old xD).

Im planning on winning the Lottery later this month (or at least my parents will win it xD), and ima buy a real 1965 Shelby GT350R. Found one for sale in Nevada for $775,000.

Yeah, ima dreamer, but dreams come true.

    =D

  • @thebkind because today are pussy-times

  • @thebkind

Liberalism is the reason. We can't have loud sports car racing anymore it would cause people to lose their hearing. They would want the cars to run on ethanol, bacon drippings, or have them all be silent diesel motors. I am glad that nascar doesn't give in to that crap. I used to be an alms fan but they quieted their cars down to the point that I don't want to go anymore.

  • @trent730 Whatever lets you sleep nights. Trans-Am was done in by business, not liberals, not people demanding the cars not race in their immediate backyards. In fact, most NASCAR tracks today are well outside of most population centers. So it isn't the noise. So if you want to place blame, it's with NASCAR fans, who are mostly conservatives, FYI.

  • @thebkind Why? Because too many people bought NASCAR tickets. Trans-Am went out of business because NASCAR stole their thunder. Trans-Am is an imminently more relatable racing series, especially now again that most of the muscle cars are back, except AMC. NASCAR is trying to cut Trans-Am off again with their Faux Challengers and Mustangs (thankfully GM has a sense of shame).

  • @thebkind We do have some similar series! Try the Koni Challege series, espcially the Grand Sport class, also the American Le Mons Series and not to forget the Rolex Sport Car Series, which is a direct decedent of Trans Am Racing. They're all played on Speed Channel most weekends during the summer.

  • @thebkind

We do. The SCCA Trans-am ran again this year for the first time in decades. Too bad that nobody showed up to watch. I can't imagine they'll try to pull it off again next year. They didn't even get a title sponsor this year. I blame NASCAR and Tony George.

  • @thebkind Because somehow it's cooler watching Ford Taurus's and Chevy Lumina's go around in a circle.

  • @fiddynutz68 Yeah!! A V8 rear wheel drive carbureted Ford Taurus making perpetual left turns, now that's STOCK car racing... yaaaawn.

  • @thebkind They do

  • @thebkind we do, rolex sports car series on speed

  • @thebkind we do have racing like this. it is called grand touring. they take brand new sports cars and essentially add safety features and tune them a little and that is it.

  • @thebkind We do! Try the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge.

  • @thebkind We've got all the cars back...we need to have this kind of racing back, too!

  • @thebkind Because there is no market for it. Trans Am also relied upon factory support for all damaged parts, which was expensive. Sprint Cup cars are team-built.

However, the Continental Tire Sports Car Challenge heavily resembles the old Trans Am Series.

  • @WorldChallenge Noneless it would be a sight to see when their modern incarnations battling out.

  • pure sex! love them cars so much!

  • Great footage thanks. Long live MD

  • I love youtube, and thanks fof putting this up. I was in grade school when this was going on. All I ever saw were still photos in the Car Craft and Hot Rod magazines I drooled over. This footage is so much fun!!!

  • Great Vid, thank you very much!!

  • wow classic cars..classic racing..

  • Check out those centirfugal drifts man!

  • Sweet!
