Is it just me, or is this song ~heavily~ inspired by the old prison song "Rosie"? There are a few obvious differences, but from the very basic percussion to the spoken delivery and obvious similarity to quite a bit of the lyrics.
I've tried researching it a bit but have not been able to find any thing referencing "Rosie". It just seems like far too much correlation to be a coincidence.
@davesababe It's definitely a cover/reworking of that song; my understanding is that when someone writes new lyrics to a traditional/folk melody, they can be legally cited as the song's author (for example, a lot of Bob Dylan songs are basically old folk songs with new lyrics) - so, that's why Andy Stroud (Simone's 2nd husband) is credited with having written this song. Simone did a lot of covers of traditional/folk songs (Sinnerman, Sealion woman, House of the Rising Sun, etc.).
she grew up in North Carolina and you can def tell from this song. I'm from SC and this is how they sing in backwoods churches, don't need many instruments and it still gives you chills. Love her!
i can't begin to comprehend how one song can stay true to its time, and simultaneously be completely ahead of its time, and yet be timeless... i mean, even today, or perhaps especially today, the whole song, the way she's sung it, the beats, the words.. all just sound absolutely contemporary and brilliant! and yet, its so bizarrely timeless that i'm blown away each time i hear it... and it'll keep sounding brilliant for every generation to come...
@s1ygirl I think he did for a lot of us, lol. Edith Piaf included. I like how Jeff's version stayed true to her version as evident by the clapping but yet, it still had that Buckley spin to it.
