I feel sorry for Caligula, people always say he did bad things yes of coarse but when he was little most of his family was murdered and he was forced to go to Capri where he had to watch rape, beatings and torture. Tiberuis was a sick old man, his punishments even extended to babies, he would put his gentiles in their mouths..... Poor Cal had to watch all that. No wonder he went crazy. Poor man, that was the only way he was raised to believe.
John so sexy in the role of Caligula. I liked only how he plays in this movie, why his role was so small, it`s too bad. I think, if John played the role of Nero, he would have played it brilliantly, much better than the actor who was starring.
Wait... JOHN SIMM PLAYED CALIGULA?! Sam Tyler, the symbol of all that is good and just in the world, that beacon of integrity, EFFING PLAYED CALIGULA?! ***dies***
this was weird. I know he was murdered in a tunnel connecting the palace to an ampitheater and he was killed by two Praetorian guards he insulted, and despised they were Cassius Chaerea, and Gaius Sabinus.
mentioning the Christians is not historically accurate. Christians were not noticed by roman pagans until under the emperor Nero, and he did not execute a lot of them. but as he was the first emperor to have them punished for treason, he was disliked by them. I suspect mentioning the christians is derived from the films the Robe, and Demetrius and the Gladiators.
@newfful Yes they were. After caligula was killed, his wife caesonia came running and covered his body crying. She was dragged away by the soldiers to be killed. They grabbed their daughter Drusilla and bashed her brains out against a wall.
That's versatility for you - John Simm has the capacity to play good characters such as Sam Tyler and evil characters such as Caligula and the Master.
Omg, how can he be so sweet and huggable in LOM and such an (uberly-sexy) crazy bastard maniac in this and Dr. Who?? He's brilliant! And oh so so so sexy.
Heh I just call it his "stringy screwdriver". I could have sworn that I read something somewhere about the stick being something Caligula carried around as symbolic of his divine status. To me, it just looks like a fancy fly swatter (something a Roman definitely would have needed).

ok so this is a movie about nero??? so how about showing scenes of nero? instead of all his predecessor. the movie does eventually get to nero right? cus it is called 'nero' afterall.. cus nero was worse than caligula was he not?
I can't exactly explain it to you, but John Simm's dweebiness is PART of his appeal. It's also got a lot to do with how intense his eyes are and the depth he puts into his characters. Intensity and talent are two things women find VERY sexy. He's also got a lovely mouth.
Trust me, you don't want to see the Nero bits. The rest of the film is dull as dirt and poorly acted. John Simm's over-the-top performance is the total opposite of what the other actors were doing. It was like he was in an entirely different movie than everybody else.
Noooo! Isn't it enough that he died once?! Agh! I hope Time Lords can regen without a TARDIS. If not, there shall be hell to pay! D:< XD

How foolish of the Romans. They should have known he'd quickly regenerate. He should have had Rory Williams protect him.

This isn't very historically accurate

@kroozader You're so right. He makes the bad guys he play so sexy. That's why I love him so much & I love his sweet, adorable side in Life on Mars.

Ahahahaha. I love John Simm so much.
This is great. The movie itself looks a bit dull but I've enjoyed these clips. :]

Caligula's murder was a domestic murder not a politic assassination.

JOHN didn't have to die. CALIGULA did. ;0) Believe me, if we were in ancient Rome, you wouldn't wonder why Caligula had to die.

No! Not John! Why is it that every time he plays an evil maniac, he has to die? And why do I always love him when he's an evil maniac?
